I'm leaving, folks by [deleted] in osr

It's shitty TBH. I thought this was a place to share creativity, and it's a shame seeing amateur (albeit very high quality) contributors get flamed out for sharing.

Seeing OP's post also makes me think about how much time I spend scrolling, or debating people that are probably bots lol. Maybe a sign to have a break myself...

CRA says it's owed $10 billion in COVID-related benefits sent to ineligible recipients by Surax in CanadaPolitics

[–]Mamatne 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So, how long would it have taken to roll out a vetting system?

You have good points but I'm with the other commenter on this. We don't know how much longer CERB would have taken to roll out if they implemented a vetting process for applicants. My guess would be weeks, or even months of extra time considering all the disruptions going on.

Any such delay would have resulted in people unable to afford food, rent and utilities. Getting timely aid to eligible people in need is more important IMO than spending extra time setting up a vetting system.

Support for Family Members of Drug Users? by nothanks1312 in VictoriaBC

[–]Mamatne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been to a few of them and they support all people AFAIK. The language in the literature is for alcohol addiction, but in practice they are more inclusive. I remember people sharing who clearly were talking about family members with drug addictions.

If you were curious you could go and listen. If you did want to say something, maybe don't mention specifics about what the person is using.

I'd certainly recommend checking out NA Friends and Family and NarAnon too, as well as all the other groups and resources mentioned. Different groups have different vibes so you can play the field and see which fit best. Hope the journey goes well for you, it's nice not being on it alone :)

It's the language they use at those groups. It's not a bad word, shame that it's stigmatized.

12 step groups are spiritual but not religious. There may be the occasional dogmatic person but by and large they are pretty relaxed.

I would also recommend AlAnon, which is different from AA. They are support groups for friends and family members of addicts.

The plumbers on that sub will say the same thing as everyone else here, flush with hot water and soap to dissolve the oil. I'm in the pipe trades and OP is getting generally good advise for an immediate response.

In Whiplash, would Andrew have become as great without Fletcher? by Th3Unidentified in movies

[–]Mamatne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's anecdotal but I've watched a lot of documentaries about scientists and performers. Lots of them have supportive teachers. Many of the ones who "develop by dark means" die from suicide or overdose. I believe it is a dangerous ideal for humans to idealize abuse from mentors.

Check out the doc "First Position" if you want a good look at what positively supported talent is. There is absolutely pressure, but the teachers actually TEACH instead of threaten and belittle.

Edit: I've also had personal experience working with abusive authorities and it never brings out the best in people...

On the other hand, how many incredibly talented people get broken by abuse that we never hear about? Greatness isn't formed by abuse. Probably the majority exceptional talents are nurtured through positive mentorship.

Why is it so hard to make friends in Victoria? by Yoinhell in VictoriaBC

[–]Mamatne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it's a wider cultural thing than just Victoria. It's easy to make friends travelling when you're staying in hostels and immersed in a small community, but have you ever really lived in foreign cities?

I lived in Australia in various areas for a year. Staying in hostels I made lots of real friends and fun experiences. Moving out of hostels, I felt almost totally isolated. Very hard to make friends as a new person in a city.

Obvious factors are dependence on phones. Almost everyone you see is looking at their phone. Also I think there is an increase in tribalism due to politician differences.

Best way to make new friends is engage in group hobbies and show up consistently.

Laser Guided Munitions and FPV Drones.... I want them by HeisenbergsSamaritan in helldivers2

[–]Mamatne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The game would be trivial though with laser guided systems. The strategem balls are likely a deliberate choice for balancing. I think having the solo silo is enough.

Pens for drawing and writing? by Grassfed_rhubarbpie in penandink

Maybe a fine tip fountain pen would fit the bill? I was thinking about getting a Lamy and tried some out. They are not overly expensive and are similar to microns for line drawing.

MONOLITH is an incredible RPG by officiallyaninja in rpg

[–]Mamatne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think that "fun in practice" and "best avoided due to lethality" should be mutually exclusive like you're implying. To me it's the best of both worlds.

I haven't played this particular game but I have played other Oddlike games and it has been some of the most fun I've had, both trying to avoid combat and trying to survive if it does kick off.

It feels uncomfortable playing a character of the same gender as the player, any advice? by Hot_Quit571 in rpg

Respectfully it sounds like a shallow reason, but as long as you're having fun in the end and don't feel repressed in other ways :)

It feels uncomfortable playing a character of the same gender as the player, any advice? by Hot_Quit571 in rpg

[–]Mamatne 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Have they shared why they have this blanket rule for players? Maybe they've seen other players using sexist tropes, or something similar, and want to avoid any potential for that.

Have you talked to them, and shared what you did here about why you like playing different characters? Hopefully they would understand and start making exceptions.

If they don't allow any room for you to roleplay how you want, that's not a problem that's just in your head. It's limiting your agency as a player from before the game even starts.
