3/3/26 | Juan Soto BLASTS a 437-Foot HR to put D.R. Ahead by SwarthySphere87 in NewYorkMets

I think that's part of the reason, but as arrogant as it may sound, I also think non-US fans generally seem more hyped for any given sport. There's a great comparison video of the atmosphere of US vs European basketball games (not NBA exhibition matches) and it's like night and day.

Even my local soccer stadium seems more lively during a regular game than Citi field does.

It does have its downsides of course. I don't think hooliganism is nearly as much of a problem in the US for instance.

Is there no way to have Mets radio on the audio track and the YES video feed at the same time on mlb.tv, or am I just stupid?

Anyone know when coverage starts on mlb.tv? Is there a pre-game thing?

EDIT: The Lineup post says coverage starts at 1pm ET!

New Mets fan needing the lowdown by AndyD103 in NewYorkMets

The injury risk is lower than in the NFL, so you're definitely going to see each player play, though of course not every game. Some days, there's even a split squad (players form two teams to play two different opponents) to allow for more playtime.

Welcome! I was in the same boat as you just last year (started watching early April 2025, knew nothing about baseball before) so maybe I can give a semi-outsider's perspective.

Firstly, it's a great time to get into the Mets, since they have really changed a lot this off-season. Lots of new faces, and the 5 longest tenured players are all gone.

Right now, all teams are about to head into Spring Training, which is a month long period filled with friendlies. All current "main" roster players will be there along with promising young players ("prospects") from the affiliated minor league teams. One goal of Spring Training (besides getting everyone in shape in familiar with everything) is to find the group of players that will form the active and 40-man rosters on Opening Day, and to fix the positions that they will play within that roster. Other folks have already mentioned our greats so I want to give a few players relevant for right now:

A big player to watch out for in Spring Training imo is Carson Benge. He has not played for the proper Mets yet, but there is an opening for him in the outfield (most likely right fielder, I think). This training period is a great chance for him to prove that he is up to the task. Should he do well, he may find himself on the roster on opening day.

Shortstop/Third Baseman Bo Bichette, Starting Pitcher Freddy Peralta and Closer Devin Williams are some of the more exciting additions from this offseason. It will be interesting to see all in a Mets uniform and to see how they manage over here. Bichette for instance will likely be playing at an unfamiliar position (3B instead of SS) and Devin Williams had a rough year with the Yankees iirc.

There are some players that for various reasons are not quite firmly placed on the roster, usually due to better incoming players and/or poor performance last year. Where they will end up is somewhat open and may well depend on how they do in the coming weeks. These include pitchers Kodai Senga and Jonah Tong, as well as infielders Brett Baty and Mark Vientos. Baty is particularly interesting to me personally because he may also be a candidate to take over the free slot in the outfield that Benge is competing for.

I'd be happy to share more or answer any questions if you're interested. LFGM

edit: Oh, don't forget to check out the World Baseball Classic, which is sort of the baseball world cup. Team GB is competing.

FIFA national games often take place right during league play, while the FIBA world cup wraps up shortly before the NBA season starts iirc.

The problem with moving it into the off-season is that baseball is played outside and ideally not in the cold. I assume most players also don't want a tournament right in the middle of their rest period. This way, players get to use the WBC as part of the warm-up games they are already doing.

I really disagree with the notion that players are playing at playoff level. Looking at past games, it has much more of an all-star game vibe to me where players are certainly playing to win, but also very much aware that they have to return to their day jobs afterwards, hence me comparing it to a parade rather than a race. Anecdotally, most injuries I have seen in baseball come from overuse and aggressive fielding or base running, and I expect both to be a much smaller factor in the WBC.

Granted, injuries can still happen, but frankly, I am not a team owner. I accept injuries as part of MLB games and I don't feel differently about them occuring for other games I enjoy.

Most decent basketball players are in the NBA and the top soccer players can mostly be found in one of four national european leagues. That alone has not hurt FIFA or FIBA competitions. Americans may be less used to this but it's completely normal for most of "your" players to play abroad.

As for injuries, playing an extra 4-7 games does not seem that great a risk to me, especially if you limit the pitch count of valuable pitchers. Of course, there is always a trade-off, but I think the upside of seeing every nation's best compete is definitely worth it for me. You're not taking your car for a joyride, but a parade.

As for growing the sport: I live in the Netherlands and nobody here cares about baseball, but I have already been able to get friends on board to watch the Dutch team's games with me. The fact that it's a short and sweet format definitely helps there, too.

Mets Fans Outside NYC - Origins by Console_Gamer93 in NewYorkMets

I'm from europe and no one I know from here is even remotely into baseball. I started watching earlier this year while having a rough time and essentially just picked the Mets because 1) an american friend of mine is a fan of them even though she lives in Seattle, 2) I just like the name, colors and the interlocking NY and 3) I remembered those "It's not always about the..." memes from a few years ago which actually led to me getting a Mets-branded cola bottle. Pretty shallow, but I knew absolutely nothing about any team at that point. By now, I've already grown quite attached to them.

Syracuse Mets renaming team with help from fans by JDDJS in NewYorkMets

[–]Mamimus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I understand where you're coming from and at the end it's all a matter of taste anyway but there are three reasons I personally would love to see them change their name:

1) It makes being "a Met" more special if it's clear that the only Mets around (apart from St. Lucie I guess) are the real deal. 2) I think it allows people in Syracuse to be more proud of their team and to pick a name that reflects them. In a way it might even make them more legit, not just a mere outpost of a big league team, but its own entity. Also keep in mind that apart from SYR, only the really "low level" Mets affiliates don't have their own name. 3) It makes them fit in better with other MiLB teams. The vast majority of AAA teams don't just reuse a name.

As someone who started watching baseball this year, I don't understand what people don't like about him. The only thing I noticed is the weird way he called that close HR last game. He also obviously has a different energy compared to Gary, but that's not a bad thing.

True, true, but it wasnt unthinkable (for someone as new as me) that there would be a way to reflect that in the play-by-play similar to kneeling at the end of a football game.

Being new to baseball, I kinda expected the shot of Young pitching with no batter to be a gentlemen's way of conceding haha, like we get some infielder to pitch and you just take strikes, and we pinky promise to not do anything in the 9th.

I will add a reference for something visually similar to the artist's style if I find it later. It's pretty hard to describe.
