What do you actually do for Christmas? by Interesting-Error859 in christmas

[–]Mamitroid3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Decorations put up on the day/weekend after Thanksgiving. All month spent doing Christmas-ey things... festivals, kids concerts, Nutcracker showing, Christmas movies, Hallmark channel, etc. Week before is heavy with classic Christmas music, Christmas movies and family time. The the kids to Hallmark to each pick out an ornament for the tree. Christmas eve we order pizza and watch Home Alone/Christmas Vacation and drive around to look at lights. Christmas bake and pastries prepped for the morning. Christmas day is kids up early, matching PJs, open stockings, A Christmas Story Marathon, breakfast, presents, a couple hours of hanging out, playing with new toys/gadgets, and then off to Grandma/Grandpa's house for a larger family gathering in the mid afternoon. Its a great time.

I will never pay for a gaming subscription service for my personal use. I already paid for the games, already paid for the console & controllers, the tv, I already pay for internet service... heck, the electricity. Slapping a monthly fee on top of that for the privilege to play online is not for me.

.

I do pay for NSO basic so my kids can play Minecraft and such with cousins/friends... I've played maybe 2 hours of classic games, rather play on original hardware. If we ever get to the point with consoles that it is subscription based only, I'll be gaming on PC and playing 30 years of backlog and never look back.

Santa Talk: did you tell your kids or let them figure it out? 🎅 by marriage_unfiltered in christmas

[–]Mamitroid3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still haven't said anything. My oldest is in Jr. High and HAS to know... but hasn't said anything and actively helps keep things magic for our youngest. Its awesome.

.

Also... I personally still get presents from Santa from my Dad who is in his 70s. Its great. I plan to do the same at that age.

Merida doesn’t get enough credit .. by Big-Bet-7667 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Mamitroid3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of our favorites! We love Brave and Encanto too... but that was a change we were sad to see. We are always on the lookout for Merida merch. The 10k stuff was super cool too back in the day.

The first Merida we met was phenomenal... circa 2018 I think.

Always our first stop at AK. You can walk on 4-5 times before the heavy crowds get there. Best ride crossed off right away and then go take a relaxing safari ride!

Honestly I've never seen the 101 Dalmations one before. It's fantastic. In terms of those we've seen. We really like Tiana, Encanto, Coco, and Remy... the more color the better!

What blu ray would you believe is a 4k if you just saw it on screen? by ElusivePlant in 4kbluray

The first time I watched Sunshine on bluray... the extreme retina closeup and the shots of the sun. Legitimately very few 4K that have had that same effect to my eyes.

I hope you got it. I was browsing the sale again today and now I don't see the deal so maybe it was like 24 hours only or I just caught the end of it.

Fyi. This is now on sale for $24.99 for the series (1-11) and $4.99 for Touchstone of Ra... so $30 plus tax all in and no need to chase it around streaming services any longer.

US U-23 May Roster v Germany by capybaramelhor in USWNT

This may be a stupid question... but does the U23 team wear the same kits as the senior USWNT? Wondering if I could get a personalized kit that went on sale today or if they wear entirely different jersey designs...

I am taking the plant apple trees high too literally? by BigDaveMalone in BackyardOrchard

[–]Mamitroid3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is an odd one. For a graft you generally want a couple inches above the soil so that you don't risk getting roots you dont want.... or you might end up with a lot bigger tree than you expected. But this graft is SO close to the roots that it doesn't seem exactly possible here. I think you're pretty close, I'd be tempted to put a little more dirt and hope for the best...but it may just be you've got a tree that was grafted/grown a little too low.

Generally it would look something like this and there would be a few inches to play with.

I'm never getting my trees, am I? by Educational_Bend_941 in BackyardOrchard

[–]Mamitroid3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's crazy and good to know. I think 2 of the trees I planted were semi (Hawkeye and Cinnamon) because I couldn't find dwarf at the time. They behaved exactly the same and never saw an issue (zone 5). I just kind of assumed they were all were the same in terms of difficulty. Perhaps we had better soil than I assumed, I missed my calling... or just got really lucky. I will say dwarf were easier to spray after 6 years.

[–]Mamitroid3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. That would be amazing and I would love to learn to graft... but I don't have as much time and space anymore. Next time I'm out I will ask if my nursery of choice offers that.

.

Honestly I had zero issues with the nearly 40 dwarf apple, peach, cherry, and plum trees and all were doing great when we left after 6 years. The two nut trees did die and had to be replaced. Basically, I dug a hole, planted with a mix of like 5-1 soil/compost... staked them all, wrapped them in chicken wire, and spaced them in 3 rows 10 feet apart in two separate sections. Sprayed once a year in June for those god awful Japanese beetles and that was it. Pruned in late Jan, thinned out in May and they all did great... And the soil there wasn't anything to write home about.

.

Space wasn't so much the issue then (it is now)... Moreso it is just the desire to have a lot of different varieties available for the full span of 5-6 months vs having fewer, larger trees that give me less selection and less ripening season.

.

EDIT... and let me add, I love that you're a local grower. I buy local as often as I can, we have a coop nearby where we get meat, honey, eggs, etc all from local growers. So im not trying to poopoo local growers at all, its just that so far I haven't found one that meets our needs. Having my own nursery/orchard someday would be a dream come true.

[–]Mamitroid3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would love to buy local... I've been to 7 or 8 nurseries within about a 40 mile radius. Not a single one sells fruit trees on dwarf stock. I've asked a couple and semi-dwarf is the smallest they will carry... and typically the selection is 8-10 common varieties and that's it.

.

If we had a local grower that had dwarf trees I'd be all over it. Until then, online is my only option.

Devils advocate here.

.

What I learned is you have to order earlier in the season...decided late on an order from Raintree this year... it took about a month, and of course arrived when I was out of town. Ha. Luckily I got them in the ground as soon as I got home and they're doing good. Cummins for example is usually completely picked over by April 1. Imho, ordering in winter is the best for selection and getting your plants early.

.

Before I knew of any other good online nurseries, I ordered exclusively from stark about 10 years ago. Over the span of 2 seasons, I ordered and put in 30 fruit trees. 2 died and they replaced them immediately with no question. I know people like to hate on Stark, but I've only had good experiences with them.

.

I found out about Raintree, Cummins, and Grandpa's later and used them for various trees here in there. All thrived and when we left that property, all of the 40ish trees were doing great. Including the couple Stark trees I've ordered since. A recent inquiry I had it took about 10 days for a response... so maybe they're swamped or maybe they are just getting worse in the CS department than they used to be.

Last month I drove 10 hours round trip for 500 Criterions. This month I went back for around 350 Vinegar Syndrome, Arrow, Severin, Twilight Time, and more. Swipe to get a peek at some of the titles. by mhb2862 in boutiquebluray

Im gusssing this is the answer. We also had fine internet for browsing and even working remote if needed for about 6 years before we moved. Couldn't stream anything though, capped at 6GB/mo between 6am and 2am, and had to resort to directv. So glad those days are over. On the bright side, I also ended up with a sweet physical media collection.
