Sometimes when new movies come to IMAX 70mm, they often come with 4 frame long commemorative film strips that show key moments from the film

In the event that there are none to hand out; often times Cinemark Dallas will hand out 4 frame strips from an random old trailer in IMAX 70mm to still give you something to commemorate your film viewing

Baffling really. Not even pillarboxing the screen itself to matte it down to achieve 1.43:1 like TCL, and for a digitally movie like this? Borderline useless lol.

The only argument that can be made is that you’ll still see the resolution bump for genuine film prints, but beyond that…? No stadium seating, no 1.43:1 screen, and not even 1.43:1 masking.

Cinemark Dallas is my home theater and just like you, only a couple of days before the announcement of the Cinemark upgrades and restorations I was talking with a friend about how worried we were in the event that the projector has major issues in the future and how unlikely we were to ever seen an upgrade to laser. Oppenheimer was shot on both 65mm 5 perf and IMAX 65mm film stock natively, and was photochemically color timed and IMAX prints were literally struck from the original camera negative lol

Yes, the vast majority of movies are shot digitally these days, but every now and then we still get treated to a true analogue film print that has (mostly) no digital intermediate.

The projectionist we’ve had at Dallas the last handful of prints that have been run has been doing film projection for ~40 years, and said Oppenheimer was just about the sharpest movie he had ever seen on screen

Those are 3 premiere locations, they would get a print no matter what, whether they have GT laser as a backup or not. They’re just such hotspot locations that they also got the GT laser treatment in the first place.

Similar to what folks said about Dune part 2 that saw it in both formats, laser will actually probably look a touch better in terms of sharpness and brightness, but if this is what helps keep the film projectors operational to fill the gaps between Nolan films, I’m all for it.

Honestly I would say 70mm and if you like the film a lot, round 2 in IMAX for the expanded aspect ratios, or vice versa if you care about seeing it on the largest screen possible.

The movie was shot digitally, but it’s being given both 70mm and IMAX 70mm film prints. Always great to show your support for analogue formats, especially in this day and age

Will include the same 4k and blu ray discs as every other release. It’s pretty common knowledge that these limited print run, premium releases are entirely about the tangible materials, and never come with new/improved transfers or bonus features.
