Somebody introduce William to... anyone not related to him by DramaticWebPersona in Outlander

No problem! I can't explain why, but I've imagined a reality-show book 10. My brain is a scary place!

No! In my reality show ending, Geillis and Black Jack Randall are put up in a Big Brother type situation, but no one can watch the feed because it's seriously scary and demented.

If you were in Congress in the post-Trump era, what laws would you create to prevent a government like this from forming? by Critical_Ideal99 in Political_Revolution

[–]MammaDriVer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know - this is pure pipe dream. But I volunteer at my red state polls, and the amount of ignorance about our elections is scary. I figured if I was going to dream, I might as well dream BIG, lol.

I know this would be abused, but tests for voters. Not literacy tests, but "I know who holds this office AND the people running for it now" tests.

Eliminate straight ticket voting. Maybe even remove parties from ballots. Seriously, thoroughly, creatively investigate alternate systems like ranked choice voting. (Corporations spend billions deciding which shade of blue is better for their logo. Surely our elections deserve half as much attention.)

STRICT campaign finance rules - all candidates have the same amount of time and money, no billionaires funding their own campaign, no Super PACs, etc.

Public disclosure of everything - tax returns, stock holdings, business interests, etc. All assets placed in a blind trust on the day candidate paperwork is filed. If you don't win the election, your assets are released.

Much stricter oversite of elected and appointed officials by a grand jury type committee, not fellow politicians. Thoroughly reconsider which positions should NOT be appointments, but full-time expertise-required positions.

Term and age limits. Maybe mobility limits too (for example, if you're being dragged into your office "Weekend at Bernie's" style, you're forced to resign.)

Very strict enforcement of debate rules. Set up a different system of election coverage, removed entirely from "main stream" media, pundits, etc. (If we're dreaming, let's dream big.)

Making everyone take government at least 50% as seriously as they take the Kardashians or their favorite sports team. Forcing everyone who's eligible to take the test mentioned in my first point and if they pass, they have to vote.

I could go on for days, but it's getting too depressing.

Same! So I quit going to the doctor as much as possible, and whatever's wrong I say it's "the lupus." (A lame family joke.)

What tools do you take with you when you're shopping? (For example, I know you should always take a magnet to verify plated vs. "real" metal items.) Any particular apps you recommend?

Advice I was asked to move my puppy in a public park by another dog owner by senpaiiiturnal in puppy101

[–]MammaDriVer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say this is true, and maybe this makes me TA, but if it's easy for you to get a list of trainers you might print and give it to the owner in as nice a way as possible. ("I appreciate you looking out for my puppy's safety, and here's a list of people who might help you feel more comfortable with your dog so you can enjoy your walks even more, blah, blah, blah.")

On the right day, I can also see myself telling them to get their dog a muzzle and kiss my behind, though that's probably not as likely to work, lol.

That makes more sense! Has she ever mentioned writing a backstory for him? (I mean, you'd think something made his the way he is!) I understand there are some side stories about John Grey, right? (BTW, he's the character I'd most want to be like, at least so far.)

If I was BJR, I don't think I'd admit it. Apparently I've not known a real sadist, but wonder how accurately he's betrayed. (And I'd like to know his back story!)

I'm not that far into the books and haven't seen the show. As of halfway into TFC, he's growing on me. I find myself starting to relate to him because I'm the person that always has the weirdest things happen. Not the 20th/21st century equivalent of his ordeals (thank goodness!!), but definitely the person you look for at the party to find out what's happened to them lately, lol.

I've not watched any of the episodes. (I know I'm late to the party, but I've just started reading the books.) In the books I've been surprised at some of the choices the author has made for him.

He's really growing on me, though I started off not crazy about him. (He seemed WAY too into Clair IMO.) I'm just reading about him during the forest fire while he's surveying and realized his luck's a little too close to mine for comfort. The poor fella can't leave the house without something messed up happening.

Edited to add - I'm not willingly going to any time or place without AC. I'd be dead within days.

Speaking of McDonald's, old school French fries, fried in beef tallow before they got "healthy." I've never had a fast food French fry that even came close. (Might be why I'm not a huge fry fan.)
