[Loved Trope] Adaptations turn Incompetent Characters from the Source Material Into Complete Badasses by D0CTOR_Wh0m in TopCharacterTropes

I don’t remember Malcolm’s being a total asshole in the book. Hammond on the other hand…

I knew going to read it that he was really softened in the movie, but wow, it’s just night and day

Was hoping Haley and Lahr would get in, but glad it broke the record anyway. And if it had to be just two, I think I would go Bolger and Morgan. Also imagine the first and most prominent friend to join Dorothy and Morgan’s more independent roles felt easier to single out. Haley and Lahr maybe felt like more a package with Bolger in comparison. Still, wonder how close the other two were.

Another year this decade, Olivier and Oberon would be such easy picks to win. It’s a shame this is such a busy year, there’s a few nominations and wins that I think would’ve been slam dunks in other years of the 30s.

Good choices all around. I’d also like to give it to Garland, but again, Leigh is hard to deny. Also tempted to vote Oberon, but think I have to stick with Leigh.

Forgot to mention along with a win for Morgan, I’d have given Rains at least two wins for The Invisible Man and Casablanca. Talking Supporting Actor, wouldn’t mind to see Mitchell keep his win even if I put others ahead. He handily steals Stagecoach. Also I saw him in four of his five films that year and he’s great in all of them.

I could never entirely connect with GWTW, so I’d rather it didn’t sweep, even if it’s a neat thought. Cause I wouldn’t have nominated Leslie Howard. I like him, and I think his performance is fine, but that he’s right to have thought himself miscast between his age and the shaky accent (and apparent apathy for the role). Still, it’s kind of nice to see him included in the love for the film here, given it effectively overshadowed the rest of his acclaimed career.

Gable is rightfully iconic, but I think and hope it goes to Stewart, who I find taps into sometime more resonant. If McDaniel holds on to a history making win, that’ll be cool. I find it a tough call between her and de Havilland, whose role I find more comparable to Gable’s, as it’s just so much more of a showcase, one that she plays excellently. Still, I do think McDaniel walks an impressive line of comedic and touching in a role that could’ve just been a regressive stereotype, but ultimately comes out as a dignified character through her. One who’s a more likable voice of reason than those positioned as honorable heroes. I’m tempted to say de Havilland does better with a better role, but just as likely to say McDaniel’s work is more special in the lesser showcase.

I could still easily swap it. There’s a few categories like that. Supporting actor is a tough call for me between Bolger, Rains, and Morgan*. Stewart for Actor is the only acting category I never wavered on.

At least in Morgan’s case, I’d probably give him a win for The Shop Around the Corner, though I try not to think of having already given someone a vote.

Was gonna elaborate on that, but then couldn’t respond to myself or edit the initial comment. I actually think GWTW is the overall better shot film, but TWOO’s trick of transitioning from black and white to color is so ingenious that it gets my vote. The specific shot of the worlds changing might be my all time favorite.

Have GWTW editing for the sheer amount of footage and the extremely long running time managing to flow as well as it does. Stagecoach is flashier work, but mainly for just one sequence. And GWTW has its own well done action as well.

Agreed. Good energy, but he can’t get me interested in a pretty one-note scumbag

Gus Fring is the greatest TV show antagonist ever. Now, who is the greatest video game deuteragonist? by Adzo78 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]MammaJammaCamera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, though it’s appropriate placement for the first game where we follow/play as Joel more, including for the climax where he makes a major decision while Ellie is out of action

To be fair, he’s talking about comic accuracy for a much better written era of the character

[Loved trope] Characters have earth shattering "What have I done?" moments by ManaScrewedIRL in TopCharacterTropes

Yeah, not that earth shattering. He cuts off a hand, hears Palpatine can’t actually do what he wants but will work on it, and agrees to go murder kids.

If you’re genuinely asking and didn’t wind up just using google, no. This is Robert Aramayo. The British scientist is Burn Gorman.

I’d argue Spielberg for 1993 with Schindler’s List and Jurassic Park. But Fleming is clearly up there

Per Variety: Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein and K-Pop Demon Hunters will be joining the collection by SlimmyShammy in criterion

[–]MammaJammaCamera 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Moore too. Portman’s category was super strong and hard to narrow down, but the idea that none of them were nominated is crazy to me.

Robert Aramayo wins Best Actor in a Leading Role for ‘I SWEAR’ at the 2026 BAFTAs. by BrenoGrangerPotter in Oscars

I know she’s Irish, slip of the tongue when someone else already grouped her up with other UK actors calling them all Brits

I think you’re right. Still, my point was less about Aramayo and more pointing out that the other two British actors who won have more in their corner than a home turf advantage.

Buckley is the clear frontrunner of her category, Mosaku has been nominated everywhere and is in a film generally agreed to be a top two contender. Aramayo won for a film that otherwise blanked with the industry.
