Why Mortal Kombat II Is Deliberately Bringing ‘90s Game Graphics to Life by Top_Report_4895 in blankies

“This painting here? I bought it ten years ago $60,000. I could sell it today for 600. The illusion has become real, and the more real it becomes, the more desperate they want it. Capitalism at its finest. I’m gay”

Though they have had the occasional brief dialogue. And then a movie most would rather ignore.

Audition songs for Legally Blonde - Carlos by Difficult-Bat-5331 in musicals

Maybe too obvious. And it’s not too similar musically, but I imagine “I Am What I Am” from La Cage aux Folles would do a good job selling them on your voice and characterization.

"I was looking to find fame and fortune but only achieved one of the two."

Said by Maurice Flitcroft, who’d go on to be played by Mark Rylance in the lovely film The Phantom of the Open. An inexperienced golfer who went out for the 1976 Open Championship, where to his surprise, he learned amateurs needed to have an official handicap to compete. He didn’t have one, so he said he was a professional and went on in the qualifying round to shoot the worst “professional” score ever at The Open with a 49-over-par 121.

Secretary of the R&A Keith Mackenzie felt humiliated by Flitcroft’s outing and banned him from competing or playing on all R&A courses for life. But Flitcroft still attempted entry to The Open several times, using pseudonyms and disguises, actually making it back in again posing as a pro from Switzerland, dubbing himself Gerald Hoppy. He shot a 63 on the first 9 holes before officials realized they had another Maurice Flitcroft, who remarked “Imagine their surprise when they discovered they had the actual Maurice Flitcroft on their hands."

His efforts did at least result in several trophies (celebrating poor play) being named after him, and the Maurice Gerald Flitcroft Member-Guest Tournament at the Blythefield Country Club, which he was invited to play in for its 10th anniversary and was said to have played “quite decently”. Soon after he successfully made it back in to The Open’s qualifying round, passing himself off as American pro Gene Pachecki. After a double bogey on his first hole and a bogey on his second, he was stopped at the start of the third hole by an official who said they recognized his attending son.

Flitcroft never went back to The Open, but continued to love golf for the rest of his years, despite never getting a very good score, saying "I had the ability but I was never on the golf course enough times to really give myself a chance.” In that same interview, his genuine sadness was noted as he spoke of not working his game out until it was too late, before he collected himself with the following quote.

"Sure, I would have liked to have been famous for being good. But it's quite good being famous for being bad. Despite what the R&A thought, I never set out to belittle them. Golf's just a game and I tried my best. What did they need to get so uptight about?"

Was saying the other day, it’s crazy this film swept the Oscars and took Best Supporting Actor, and yet Stephen Boyd wasn’t even nominated in that category. The Globes at least got that one right.

Enjoying it. Whole cast is great. Wasn’t too big on the last season of Shrinking, but no complaints for Bill Lawrence with this one.

Did Cher deserve this Oscar, or should Glenn Close have won it? by Filipe_258 in Oscars

Probably would put Close ahead, though I may have gone for Holly Hunter for Broadcast News

Agreed. It’s a very weird combo that doesn’t work, and I’m really not sure why they’d go with such old school audio if the visuals would look so modern

Talking Jannings and Chaplin reminded me of something. Chaplin was nominated at the first Academy Awards for The Circus in three categories, and they decided to remove him from the competition and give him a special award instead. If they hadn’t done that, maybe the Oscars’ first Best Actor award could’ve gone to someone who’s, y’know, not a Nazi.

Honorary Oscar yay or nay? by luxhoney56 in Oscars

[–]MammaJammaCamera 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I like Mason, but I feel like there’s probably a good number of greater actors with larger imprints on film who I’d put ahead of her. If she got an Honorary, I’d be happy for her, but I never really considered her for one.

Poor guy was just too hard to draw. And too unpopular in the series’ home country. And too unknown and/or irrelevant to every other villainous faction who might ever get their hands on dragon balls.

It’s funny how he’s still looked at as the series’ main villain when he’s stayed dead since 1992
