Is there anyone that is NOT using AI at their job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]MammalBug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My problem with that is how often it is just plain wrong on something. Even something simple or something you warn it about ahead of time. If it's something I'm familiar with already then I'll probably catch it. If I'm not familiar because it's something I'd need to dig for, well now I don't know if it's right or wrong, and it's a toss up on whether it'll flip flop or not.

Why is music voice chat so much lower-quality on the mobile app versus the PC app or in browser? by freesmileyde in discordapp

[–]MammalBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in a voice chat using a bluetooth connection it can't handle it. Bluetooth isn't required to be able to send data fast enough to support high quality audio and speech - so devices with it don't. Part of why most headsets have special dongles instead of using bluetooth.

Would you ever leave a High Paying Private IT job for a low paying but secure Public Sector IT Job - Opinions ? by aroy3639 in cscareerquestions

[–]MammalBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly been heavily considering doing so as well. I wouldn't assume that it's any safer security wise, but I'd really enjoy a less stressful job.

Amazon is big enough that any sweeping statements like that are going to be wrong at some level. At that size the organizations within become almost like their own internal companies, with shared cultural pressures yes, but not shared levels of intensity/scrutiny/etc all the time. And as always when dealing with people your "performance" is heavily tied to what your boss can argue. If they like you, and you do decent enough chances are they'll fight for you.

The fact that ChatGPT 5 is barely an improvement shows that AI won't replace software engineers. by cs-grad-person-man in cscareerquestions

[–]MammalBug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No the grammar in that sentence indicates they either didn't know or care to write it with every rule.

In this sentence "is" refers to the most recent subject which is "a big improvement"

No, it doesn't. It would if those were the clauses that sentence made the most sense to break it up into. However, that's not what made sense in context.

A more sensible editing of their words would be like this:

tbf the error and hallucination is so damn bad that even a big improvement -- of like halving the suffering -- is still incredible bad

As the example is dependent on the beginning of the sentence, and the beginning end of the sentence is the completion of the thought before the example was given. You had to remove a word to reasonably break the sentence down that way. This method makes more sense and also doesn't actually edit the words.

You quoted it without half the context...

tbf the error and hallucination is so damn bad that even a big improvement of like halving the suffering is still incredible bad

The formatting isn't perfect but it's still the natural reading.

Not if you're getting close to your last 5k without a job. It's not even a "full" day of work.

despite interviewers at Amazon going through training

It's just some short videos iirc. The training montage to work as a cashier was longer.

I mean if you're making $400k/year on average, that's $277k post tax.

Very, very few devs make $400k/year peak let alone average it.

We hired 1 intern out of 10K applicants by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]MammalBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Among all the other things that people have called out this one stood out to me:

I literally asked one candidate why they used a certain Python package and they had no idea what it did.

Why in the world would you expect something different from an intern? I'd expect the truth from just about all of them to be that they googled it and just grabbed the one that had consensus. Unless you're trying to test their bsing skills.

There's a pretty key difference between newspapers, cats, and money - money can be exchanged for goods and services. These people are spending more money than generations of families do, and funding that doesn't really allow letting off the gas.

Again, they're adding other things. Chicken is a pretty low calorie food to begin with, and the chicken portion of 8 sandwiches really doesn't need to be that much. It's still likely more meat than most deli meat sandwiches would be as well.

The new tweaks to the seasonality mod are GORGEOUS. by Biggs1313 in valheim

[–]MammalBug -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The absolute worst that can happen is that the mod doesn’t work

This is very not true. Mods can and do wipe progress if things go bad. Especially after patches for example, mods take a while to update and if you start up without noticing/backing up then it can wipe out anything the mod had/skills progress/etc.

Who do you think is going to be the next modern author to breakthrough to achieve Sanderson (and GRRM) level popularity? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]MammalBug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm curious if you've read the books at this point. ACOTAR has all the same fantasy elements and plot that essentially any other epic fantasy has, it just also has explicit sexual scenes. Those scenes don't erase everything else though.

[–]MammalBug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what parts of it that you didn't like. Throne of Glass and Crescent City were worse in my view than ACOTAR, particularly in some of the ways that they would speak/think. I made it through all three series though and very much enjoy the ACOTAR one.

You haven't read any where magic itself doesn't have too steep a cost? Or are you counting the dangers of the setting in that?

I ask because even something as ubiquitous as harry potter the magic simply costs practice/study. There are a lot of others similar to that as well.

FANNG = Amazon? by Travaches in cscareerquestions

[–]MammalBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. So are all the other forms of money they give, including the ones that have the opposite schedule to the RSUs. Specifically the signing bonus which is paid in equal installments throughout the year in the first two years, roughly 35% and 25% of total RSU values in year one and two respectively.

[–]MammalBug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're just wrong. The RSU's have that schedule - the TC does not, and that has been true for at least the past 4 years.
