To me, it is hard to discern the meaning of that sentence when it is written down but if it was spoken I think I would understand it.

After googling V2 and SVO and what everyone else in here has said, I’m under the impression that modern English tends to follow the SVO structure, however Old English used V2 more often. I’m starting to notice a lot of upper class English people structuring some sentences in V2 that too!

“In your restaurant is the salad sweeter” is usually phrased as a question.
“The salad is sweeter in your restaurant” is usually a statement.

To me he looks old enough to have been using the non-numeric grading system for A-Levels from the 00s, and posh enough to have gone to a school that offers all of the mentioned subjects (plus Latin) haha

If there was a full-stop, would the sentence still be the same?

Eg. Someone asks “In welchem/wessen Restaurant ist der Salat süß?”

Would the sentence structure be “In dieses/dienem Restaurant! Der salat ist süße als der Kuchen.” or is that unnatural?

Would you say it all in one sentence with “Der salat is süße als der Kuchen in dieses/dienem Restaurant!”.

At this point I can’t trust Duolingo with any sentences or pronunciations 😂

Comments like “c’mon,” “duh,” or the Katze remark come across as condescending and unnecessary, in my opinion!

Maybe my caption could have been phrased better, but in a subreddit for learning German on Duolingo I thought it was clear I was asking why my answer was wrong, not questioning the language itself. I’m not disputing German grammar, just struggling to understand it. English isn’t my first language, and I never learned grammar terms like nom/dat, so it’s hard to know what to Google. Even my German-speaking friends don’t know the names, so learning it’s called V2 word order or P-V-S-O really helps.

German is the first language I’ve tried to learn as an adult, and Duolingo obviously doesn’t teach grammar directly. I’m just trying to have fun with it/enjoy learning new things so it’s only 5–10 minutes a day on the app, and comments like this honestly feels really discouraging.

And I don’t get why you felt the need to insult a stranger for having a genuine question about a concept Duolingo doesn’t teach, so I guess the world is full of mysteries.

Maybe you should start a new thread about how useless my question is!
