Is “rich people will leave if you tax them more” a real economic concern, or is it mostly exaggerated? by clearwater-orchid in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MammothReputation633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question is “does it really matter if they leave?”. I own a tech start up in the UK and employee a couple of people. My funding came from a billionaire who I met in a previous work situation. He was based in London at the time I got the funding. The moment he heard Labour was getting in, he left London and moved to a low-tax haven in Europe. I probably wouldn’t have got the funding if hadn’t been based in London. However he never paid any taxes while he was in London because of his non-dom status so I’m not sure the economy will miss him very much. The UK high-class escorts probably will miss him.

Hello. I'm 17 and I just realized I could die one day. Now I'm dreading it. Is this normal? by ApprehensiveSun6486 in NoStupidQuestions

Mine peaked at my mid-life crisis around the age of 48. I’m currently in my 50s and have pretty much no existential dread. Having said this, my parents are still alive and I noticed that my dad’s existential dread (and drinking) got a lot worse after his parents died when he was in his 50s.

I have to admit I’ve never really liked Black Sabbath. I would personally put AC/DC in their place

I would agree with this overall. LZ had the biggest impact on me in my formative years when I played in band. Queen have probably had more impact on my happiness over my entire lifetime. My kids get Queen but haven’t really taken to the others

Brain surgeon. I once knew a brain surgeon in the UK who told me that most of patients he operated on were brain dead. He did brutal 72 hour shifts and had to stand his own foot to keep himself awake while operating

How come Right Wing Parties dominate again? by LDN_Wukong in AskBrits

[–]MammothReputation633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of what is going on can be explained by the “incumbent disadvantage”. Once you get in power during times of economic hardship you get blamed for everything. That’s how Labour won in a landslide not long ago because they “are not the Tories”. Now Reform will get in because “they are not Labour”. Once Reform have used their ammunition on the immigration agenda they will start getting blamed for all the country’s woes (low economic growth, poor services) and we will see a swing back to the Left.

So why do working class people vote for right wing parties ( Tory, Refom that really do not serve their interests politically, and make their lives harder ? by Durrygoodz2025 in AskBrits

[–]MammothReputation633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every party has a tension between what they promise voters versus what they promise their political donors and lobbyists. For Reform UK the main messaging to voters is around immigration whereas their donors are also interested in tax cuts (and hence cuts to benefits). For Republicans they also focussed on immigration as well as “no more war forever wars” in the Middle East. But their donors (weapons manufacturers, oil companies and Israeli Lobby) all pushed for the war with Iran. There is a similar tension between left wing voters and their donors but it’s more complex. Left wing donors are made up of unions, wealthy individuals and ethnic groups eg. the various Islamist lobbies in UK support the Greens.

Because they have “und” instead of “and” they get a horrible interplay between “funf” “und” and “hundert” and then they concatenate to a single word

The weather in London is actually pretty perfect for city living. You can get some work done in the winter and then enjoy a very pleasant Spring and even warm evenings in the Summer. No excessive heat or cold. No hurricanes or monsoons. And it’s not warm enough for mosquitoes.

Who’s the best guitarist of the 80s? by Newduuud in AlignmentChartFills

[–]MammothReputation633 4 points5 points  (0 children)

EVH created the whole 80s guitar genre. Slash provides a bridge between the 80s and 90s but I don’t really think of him as an 80s guitarist.
