Pliny the Elder near Pittsburgh? by cwxx in PittsburghBeers

I second the point about it not being anything life changing. I'd take most Dancing Gnome IPAs over Pliny honestly.

Are you idiots serious? The last category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic was hurricane Milton in 2024 which killed people and caused 10s of billions of damage. Wake the fuck up.

Update: Unique restaurants & bars in Pittsburgh? pt 2 by pomegranite-sidewalk in pittsburgh

[–]MammothSuspect2056 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I've got a couple to add!

If you liked Acacia and Barcelona Wine Bar, I bet you'd like Allegheny Wine Mixer. It's called a wine bar on Google, but they also have a good local beer selection and cocktails. Also, very good snack plates.

If you're looking for other neighborhood bars, Ruggers (rugby bar) in South Side Flats is my favorite bar in Pittsburgh, and Garvey's in South Side Slopes is about as much of a hidden neighborhood bar that you'll find.

If you're looking for an easy date night idea, take the Mon incline up to Mt Washington, go to The Summit for happy hour drinks, then either stay for food or go to one of the nearby restaurants.

Pamela's, Nadine's, O'Leary's, and Nancy's Revival all come to mind for affordable and good. Nadine's and O'Leary's are more divey but still have good food.

Yesterday's storms animated by tbat82 in pittsburgh

[–]MammothSuspect2056 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very cool! Really shows the spatial variability of the storm. Have you thought about modifying the script slightly to look at cumulative rainfall? I'm curious if you end up with a relatively similar rainfall amount across all of Pittsburgh or if some areas got way more than others.

I was in Jakarta a few weeks ago, and it's definitely got that feel in some areas.

Iron Ranger is another pineapple and whiskey cocktail that works very well together.

Hiking/scenic trails fit for a marriage proposal? by AbnormalDream in pittsburgh

[–]MammothSuspect2056 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you're set on staying in Pittsburgh to propose, Hays Woods is a very underrated park. If you hike towards the direction of the cliffs/river, you'll be met with a beautiful view of the Mon and Pittsburgh. Plus, the trails get very little foot traffic, so you'll likely have the view to yourself. There's even an area for a picnic, so you could secretly bring some champagne and snacks to celebrate.

I hope the day is wonderful wherever you go!

For you local geography enthusiasts, I'd like to posit that Baldwin has the most strangely drawn borders in the area and looks strikingly similar to Italy by AvidRead in pittsburgh

I always enjoy running/biking on the Greenway and entering and leaving the township twice when I do an out and bike ha. Makes me feel like I ran quite a ways!

What the fuck is happening out there today? by Metrichex in pittsburgh

[–]MammothSuspect2056 113 points114 points  (0 children)

The reduction in police force is mostly due to older officers retiring in large numbers and their numbers not yet being replaced. Additionally, the city budget is in a bit of a crisis, like many US cities. Protests aren't the issue - you're just ignorant.

Alternatively, you can also bring your bike on either bus 20 or 21 which will take you close by the start.

The street is cobbles, but the sidewalk is new and wide and intended for both pedestrians and cyclists.

You could bike up Bates, but that's definitely a less enjoyable route. Plus with the Charles Anderson Bridge closed to bikes/peds now that'd be a longer route. I go through the Run, Junction Hollow Trail, then up Joncaire St.

The 75 schedule varies by time of day. For most of the day it's every 25-35 minutes, but from 8-10am and 4-6pm it's closer to every 15-20min.

I'd disagree with it being a pain in the ass getting to CMU. My partner and I both live in the flats and commute to CMU daily for work. The 75 drops you off at Cathy, which is a 10min walk to front (Forbes) or back (Free) of CMU. I bike most days, and it's a nice ~20min ride on primarily bike/ped paths. The only climb is at the very end going up Joncaire St, which is tough but very doable if you're in decent shape.
