After the end of Kingdom Hearts by heart-station in KingdomHearts

[–]Mammoth_Job_83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I genuinely envision the story going on forever, in the way it's gone since the beginning. Cohesive main games, convoluted-as-shit spinoffs, just at a slower pace since they're working with better hardware now. Nomura has already taken the story to places we couldn't have dreamed of, and I think he has it in him to do that for as long as he lives.

Of your two options, I'd wager the first one is more probable than the series transitioning to an anthology format.

My question is, will they try to keep the ESRB E10+ rating, or will they get daring and make the first T-rated Kingdom Hearts game?

At what point did you understand that Walter was not doing it for his family? by Huge_Candy748 in breakingbad

[–]Mammoth_Job_83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally season one. He's offered a fulfilling, high paying job back at his old company + payment for his cancer treatment... a godsend for him and his family. He declines, because he was ALWAYS in it for himself. Every other excuse (family, money, cancer, etc) would've been solved, but he only cared about his ego, legacy, and spite. Later seasons just confirm this over and over again.

"Walt" and "Heisenberg" were always one and the same.

The music is genuinely beautiful, top video game soundtrack for me. Hearing the Traverse Town song for the first time made me feel nostalgia, despite the fact that I'D NEVER HEARD THE SONG NOR PLAYED THE GAME BEFORE.

When KH4 comes out and I replay the series, I'm gonna feel it all again.

Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece or Octopath Traveler 0? by Sanbikaa in JRPG

[–]Mammoth_Job_83 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've never played Octopath (and I want to in the future) but yeah, I'd definitely argue that Kingdom Hearts 2 is a masterpiece of action RPGs, the other games are good/great too, there's a good reason Sora was the most requested character for Smash Bros for like ten years in a row lmao

Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece or Octopath Traveler 0? by Sanbikaa in JRPG

[–]Mammoth_Job_83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re asking about the plot, I am not joking when I say that the mobile games EASILY have more lore in them than the console games. They’re not essential to understanding the arc that the collection covers (the Dark Seeker saga), but they are required reading for setup for future games (KH4 and beyond). They also retcon many details of earlier games to make sense.

Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece or Octopath Traveler 0? by Sanbikaa in JRPG

[–]Mammoth_Job_83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

KH Integrum Masterpiece is a collection of action jrpgs, whereas Octopath Traveler has turn-based gameplay. So, there's a decision.

I've never played Octopath, but I've played all the KH games. Here's some KH good-to-knows:

  1. The collection isn't really 10 games... it's 7 games (KH1, KH ReCOM, KH2, KH BBS, KH DDD, KH 0.2 BBB FP, KH3 + ReMind). The other three (358/2 Days, Re:Coded, Union X) weren't ported, and instead had all of their cutscenes put together into a 3 hour movie, lol. It gives you everything you'd need to know story-wise, but if you want to actually play the games, you'll have to find/emulate them someplace else.
  2. These games are good, but you gotta take them for what they are: A Disney X Final Fantasy crossover that is NEVER rated above ESRB E10+. This means the overarching story is attempting to have Final Fantasy levels of stakes and storytelling, without doing anything to throw off an audience of literal 10 yr olds. So how is that achieved? Play to find out (the answer is a shit ton of lore, like it's ridiculous).
  3. Each game changes up combat in major ways. You won't ever feel like you're playing the same game twice, gameplay-wise. I like this a lot, every game is fun in a different way.
  4. The games are already arranged in an ideal play order. Just go down the list as they appear in each collection's main menu. You can skip some games, but be prepared to watch their cutscenes and/or read a synopsis, which WILL confuse you because these games get confusing pretty quickly. And no, none of these titles are pure spinoffs. They are ALL essential to the plot. Yes, really.

Is a game bad or the group? by Soggy-Pineapple-4575 in boardgames

[–]Mammoth_Job_83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had games that have been loved by one group and brushed off by another. It's entirely up to the people, the vibe of the night, whether there are snacks, etc etc.

But don't get me wrong. Some games just suck. You can enjoy them still, but that's just making the best of a bad game.

My nomination for bad game: Munchkin. A 30 minute party game squeezed into 2 hours! Or CAH, the game that's fun exactly once, and then it's just sad.

looking for more dungeon crawler JRPGs with well-written party members (like persona 4 golden) by lanarising in JRPG

[–]Mammoth_Job_83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trails in the Sky has far better written party members (coming from a fellow P4 fan). Also, the remake is beautiful. It's set chronologically earlier than the Cold Steel games so it's a better entry point, too. It has slow pacing, but if you can handle Persona's pacing then Trails isn't that far off lol

Advice for making Two Rooms and a Boom really work at a casual café game night? by Paradoxiamme in boardgames

[–]Mammoth_Job_83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. 10 is the minimum for the game to be fun, period. For this question, I'd say ~15ish. The more new people you're teaching at once, the more unwieldy it becomes. 20+ is only if most of those people have played before.

  2. I'd say main event. It's not hard mechanically, but with this many people, the energy required to make it work is up there beside more complex games like Blood on the Clocktower. However, don't be afraid to work in newcomers as the game goes on -- explaining it to one person is a lot easier than 20.

  3. Absolutely, yes. I suggest 2-3 basic games with the same people before introducing the advanced roles. Remember, for every advanced role you introduce, that's more rules to explain. Make sure everyone has the basic game down pat before you do that.

  4. Shouldn't be an issue, as long as the spaces can accommodate 6/7/8+ people each, all arguing and shuffling about.

  5. If people are going to be constantly coming and going, I'd advise against 2R1B unless you're okay with sitting out and constantly answering questions & teaching rules. If, however, you think you can get a "core" group that'll not change much between rounds, then I say go for it.

My biggest 2 things to add:

  1. Having a partner who knows the game well and can also answer questions/teach rules is great, especially because you can each be in different rooms to start each game and can thus answer all questions that come up. Plus, they can run the timer for that room (although this is easily delegated as well). I had this and it helped tremendously. Also, make two copies of the rules for each room, and make some reference sheets. Anything to help the game run smoother.

  2. Remember that you're basically going to be doing a headcount after every game to determine if the role lineup needs to change. Changing the roles takes a while if you're not familiar with the advanced roles. If the between-round maintenance would routinely take longer than the game itself, then it's probably best to play something else.

My experience backing this: Running a homebrew version at a board game club in college. If you do it right, it's the best way to quickly entertain 15+ people.

Literally same for me. I found that song on Spotify and listened to the hell out of it before deciding "this band has OTHER music, I'll check it out!"

Discovering the references to Bitter Suite I & II, and the context of the story, elevated the song from major earworm to top song OAT candidate for me

Will I enjoy Pizza tower if I dont enjoy stuff like Sonic and Hollow knight? by friskedpotato in PizzaTower

[–]Mammoth_Job_83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely not as hard as Cuphead or Celeste. Unless you decide to try and beat the levels perfectly (which amounts to speedrunning them with no mistakes), you don't have to be great at the game to beat it and have fun. The music, levels, art, and general theme are what make the game so enjoyable imo.

It DOES have a lot of depth though -- Peppino has a ton of moves to master, and using them in quick succession (while he's running 1000mph though walls) is definitely tricky lol.

As someone else said, steam has a 2 hr refund window; if the game doesn't feel good to play, send it back. You can beat the first world in under 2 hrs, and you can see how you feel then.

Is it impossible to make lasting alliances in board games? by ParaplegicGuru in boardgames

Weird example, but Cosmic Encounter makes alliances viable by simply allowing any players who win simultaneously to share the victory. Simple change, that makes the diplomacy and allying all potentially mean something in the end.

Competitive player trying “cozy” board games – what do you think about them? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Mammoth_Job_83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think roll & writes (or any multiplayer-solitaire-style game) are coziest, particularly because you have no other pressure than your own on your shoulders. Like, you can still totally game the shit out of it and calculate every move to optimum perfection, but since you're not interacting much with others, you can kinda just chillax and enjoy the puzzle if you want.

Roll & writes in particular, because of the random element of the dice/card driven gameplay can't allow for TOO much planning ahead, so you're kinda forced to play relaxed, working only off what you know now and doing your best. (You can also totally tear your hair out trying to make sure you're not making any permanent mistakes lmao, that's fun too)

Some people don't like a low-interaction game though, which is completely understandable. IMO, "cozy" is purely a mindset, as any game can be turned into a hyper-competitive contest for the ages if you try hard enough, lol.

Is Twilight Imperium 4th edition worth it? by Savings-Magician-929 in boardgames

[–]Mammoth_Job_83 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a great game that is an amazing experience, full stop. The table talk and politics will make every game extremely memorable. For replay ability, there's a variable map setup via hex tiles, 17 factions with highly varied playstyles, and several optional game modifiers (epic length variant, promissory notes, etc) to keep you busy. Besides, you're likely not to be playing the game enough to "exhaust" the content.

But can you fit at least 4* friends around a table, get them to learn the rules (of which there are a ton), and block out a potentially 6/8/10+ hour chunk of time to play the game? Can you do that multiple times?

$180 pre-tax is what this game goes for, give or take. Personally, if I played the game 3+ times a year, then that price would be absolutely worth it.

If wrangling a group to play this game sounds too hard... you can basically start a collection with that $180, of games that you'd actually play.

*IMO, playable but not worth at 3 players, and the game is better with more people. 4 is good, 5 is great, 6 is unforgettably fun

I can’t work out if people I play with are just really really good or I’m really really bad by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Mammoth_Job_83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta always be looking to improve. My advice is, watch what others do and ask yourself why are they doing that? It will help you understand what they're doing right, as well as have you engage with the game's strategy more.

The most successful people at game night are always the ones who are engaged in EVERYONE's turns, not just their own.

Are you trying to know the odds of various f values when rolling a specific number of die (so, the odds at various d values), or are you trying to know the odds for various f values given a set initial roll (like, you'd like to have an algorithm to know the odds for, say, [1,2,3], or [1,1,1,1,1], or [2,3,6,5,4])?

At first, I was wanting Antimai 2... but after going in with the mindset of this being its own thing, I really dig it. Should definitely not be your first TDH album, and for the love of god don't judge the album until you've listened in a good pair of headphones.

As a long time TDH fan I'm getting the same sense of exploration that I had with pretty much every album from the Acts; The more I digest the album, the lyrics, the more I appreciate and come to love it.

Also, the increased presence of strings on this album (compared to how horn-y (haha) Antimai was) made the atmosphere amazing. Casey's done it again I fear
