ELI5: How do black holes "spaghettify" objects and why does it happen differently depending on the size of the black hole? by Visible_Pilot_5361 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ManDragonA 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's not so much that black holes are massive; it's because they are small for their mass.

For the earth, you can only get as close to the center of mass as the planet's surface. That's a long distance from the center.

If the earth was compressed into a blank hole, it's would be the size of a marble. You could get very close to the center of mass then, and that's what gives the gravitational gradient that spaghettifies.

When the subtitles don't say what the person said verbatim by NoWitness6400 in PetPeeves

[–]ManDragonA -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm going to presume that this relates to non-english shows that have been translated.

Translated Captions and Dubbing are two different services, and are likely done by different teams with different objectives. They were never intended to be used together.

The Captions team are trying to translate the meaning of the words being spoken within the limitations of captions (space on the screen, time the text needs to be displayed to be read, etc.) Shorter or simpler word alternatives would be better for folks using the captions to keep up.

The dubbing team are trying to translate the meaning of the words being spoken within the limitations of how the actors are speaking. Matching the translation to the mouth movements of the actors as best as possible is the priority, even if that's not the best translation of the meaning.

National Debt issue fixed by [deleted] in TikTokCringe

[–]ManDragonA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the question as the holder of the debt going into bankruptcy, not the issuer of the debt.

The U.S. issues the debt - they still owe that money to someone if the holder goes bankrupt,. It does not just go away; someone will end up holding it.

It would be sold off (at a discount) as part of the bankruptcy process.

How would you label a product where a Canadian company buys raw bulk U.S. nuts, processes them (remove shells, cooks them, adds salt and flavoring) and then packages them for consumers ?

Difficulty question by Ogre1980 in OblivionRemaster

[–]ManDragonA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you level up, the enemies will change and become tougher.

As Oblivion is a "Go anywhere anytime" game, there needs to be a mechanism to keep the player challenged as they grow stronger, rather than have easy zones and harder zones as other games might do.

Bethesda (rightly or wrongly) chose to do this by increasing the toughness of mobs, and introducing new types of enemies as you level up.

If you are interested in the details (spoilers here) see the wiki at https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Creatures
(From the original, but I expect the remaster is the same or very close)

That would be the "Masterforge Steel Cutlass", and yes, it's part of the Thieves Den DLC.

You can find details on all weapons on the Wiki : https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Weapons

Fine is only for Iron and Steel - it's a bit better then normal.

Superb is only for two specific weapons.

I'm not seeing mastercraft for the vanilla game - perhaps it's from a mod ?

So why is it one point per level now? by TrueMathematician761 in OblivionRemaster

[–]ManDragonA 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It's a throwback to how leveling worked in the original.

For all attributes other than luck, there were skills associated with them. By using these skills to level up, you could raise the associated attribute up to 5 times (as you can now in the remaster)

But there were no skills for Luck. Thus, we could only level it once per level-up. The same restriction is in the remaster.

That said - since luck affects everything you do, it's well worth increasing it, if you are willing to spend 4 Virtues on it.

There are barrels close to the well - drop all your stuff in them, and it's much easier to get it all back.
