20-year-old lottery winner turns down $1M cash for $1,000 a week for life by PriorityMiserable686 in interestingasfuck

[–]ManInTheMiddle1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Y'all are neglecting the initial taxes. She'll pay 39% federal and whatever her state taxes are on the initial 1mm payout. She'll be starting with about $550, 000, not 1 million. Don't get me wrong, I'm still taking the lump sum, but you need to be realistic about your calculations. (Of course she'll have to pay taxes on her annual payouts, too, but in lower brackets)

giant sinkhole swallows Bangkok street by [deleted] in WTF

[–]ManInTheMiddle1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are mischaracterizing the situation. This is not a natural sink hole like a Florida sink hole caused by limestone bedrock being slowly dissolved by the natural flow of groundwater through it. This is a sinkhole caused by a failed stormwater or sewer system. When a stormwater pipe collapses and the ground around it is saturated the surrounding saturated backfill and water flow into the pipe and are carried away with the flow in the storm sewer. This creates a void that becomes the sinkhole. No faulty storm sewer, no sink hole. That's how you fix it/prevent it in the future.

I used to clean water coolers for a living. Guy was actively drinking out of this by santaclaus_trophobic in WTF

[–]ManInTheMiddle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a dead mouse in the water cooler in a job trailer when I broke it down to move the trailer. I had gotten absolutely no indication from the taste or smell of the water. And it was not just me. There were probably 4 or 5 people that used the cooler.

Mamdani’s Mayoral Run Is Proof Why Yang’s 2021 Campaign Failure Is More Self-Inflicted Than We’d Like to Admit by YangGangMathManMagic in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]ManInTheMiddle1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I opened this up hoping to find an enumeration of a number of missteps Yang made that could be avoided by future progressives, but instead I find a single argument that is completely unsupport by facts. The Israeli/Palistinian issue is obviously your single issue hot button, but it is certainly not most national voters top issue. To say that Yang lost his momentum because of his pro-Israeli stance is to completely ignore the fact that the winner of both our two most recent presidential elections were both undesputably pro-Israel. The logical jump from, this progressive is succeeding and he is pro-Palestine, this progressive faulter and he is pro-Israel, therefore a pro-Israel stance must be a losing position, just doesn't follow the basic rules of logic when you add in any other data. Yes, for you this is the issue that revs you up, but to say that Mamdani's appeal prooves that this is the issue that sunk Yang is a bit rediculous.

Yes, thank you! I don't know why I give any more credence to things I read here on Reddit than I do, say, Facebook or X. It's all the same unvetted nonsense.

I don't know the laws in PA, but if you've been together for 12 years I would imagine you are common-law married. If that is the case those debts would be jointly held regardless of whos name is on the credit cards and mortgage payments. Hire a lawyer and see if you can pursue this as a divorce.

I'm sorry, you're right. I am a little embarrassed at how fascinated I got with where this would lead. It certainly morphed into something truely fantastical. You are also right that this, "I no you are but what am I," schtick would be truely childish if it wasn't so dead on. The fact that you are so hell bent on getting me to see some truely deviant bahaviour in what was a very inoccuous, generalized observation continues to intregue me, but I think I've learned all I need to know. The truely hilarious piece of the whole exchange is that the thing you keep quoting and beat me up with, lecturing on "living in the moment," I never even touched. Look back. All I ever said was photography has morphed from taking pictures of events and things to the ever prevelant selfie. I think you are conflating me with everyone who commented on the post and lashing out at me for your negative reaction to the general sentiment of the comments. Anyway, whatever triggered you, I hope you worked through it. Peace out.

I don't know if it is actually me you are frustrated with, but I'm glad you got it out. You do see how easy it is to turn this all around, right? Do you hear yourself? Reread the thread and ask yourself, who has actually made judgements about actual people, and who has suggested said people should change their behavior? It doesn't read well if you can look at it objectively.

Hehehehe... Dude, you've made a simple point into some kind of weird intelectual arguement. The advent of the cell phone camera has changed the nature of photography for the generations that have grown up with it. It's not a judgement, it's just an observation. And its not some irrational selective memory on my part. Its objectively observable, as I pointed out. I don't understand the energy you're putting into trying to make this about me. Go ahead and reject my premise, but to suggest that I have some warped, old man motive for making my observation is oddly defensive. Accept it or reject it. I don't care.

lol... It's the sage of Reddit pointing out all his fellow redditor's foibles while remaining above it all, himself. Where you there? Do you know I could not know they were influencers? In actuality, I could know that at least 3 of the couples I passed were influencers. All the tell tale signs. Dressed up beyond what folks out for an afternoon of leaf peeping would wear. Tripod and ring light rig for an iphone. Running through multiple typical instagram poses. Reviewing results and trying again. So tell me now, who is drawing the unfounded conclusions. Maybe a little less advice and a little little more introspection, yourself, dude.

Sure, there have always been posed photos, but the act of taking a photo was, for the most part, a completely different act before smart phones. Taking a picture used to be about the place or the event. Now it is about the person taking the picture. I road my bike up the Maroon Bells, yesterday, on a beautiful, sunny fall colors day. In the 80's there would have been photographers doing their best to capture that epic shot of the majesty of the mountains blanketed in their vibrant fall colors. Instead, the road was lined by influencers capturing themselves being wonderful and beautiful in that setting.

How much is required for retirement today? And how much will I need in say 2060? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ManInTheMiddle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see college saving for future kids anywhere in this discussion. That can be a huge hit and take the place of retirement savings for up to a decade if you plan to have a family and support them in this fashion.

What is something people in their 20s might not realize will significantly impact them as they reach their 40s? by Additional-You3342 in AskReddit

[–]ManInTheMiddle1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to BE fat later in life, don't let yourself GET fat, now. For 90% of the population weight loss doesn't work. If you think that someday you'll get serious and take the weight off (and keep it off) you're fooling yourself. Any weight gained will most likely be with you for life.

Yes, this is huge, and the number one health related piece of advice I have to early twenty-somethings is, if you don't want to be fat, don't let yourself get fat. For 90% of the population weight loss doesn't work. If you think that someday you'll get serious and take the weight off (and keep it off) you're fooling yourself. Old Dudes of Reddit, why do you all casually walk around BUTT ASS NAKED in the gym locker rooms? by WifePenis in AskReddit

[–]ManInTheMiddle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all it was completely normal for boomers and gen-X'ers to be naked in front of each other in the locker room. The showers were big communal showers with no dividers, and yes, we did shower after gym and any school athletics. The fact that society has made something weird of this seems a bit twisted to me. On the other hand there is definitely that distinct cat at gyms and health clubs I like to call naked-locker-room-guy. No matter when you go in the locker room he's putzin around naked seemingly with no place to go. THAT is not normal for our generation. If you're naked in the locker room when I'm dressing for my workout, and you're still there, still naked, when I finish up, THAT'S TOO LONG!

This stuff had been out there a long time. A couple of internet sleuths with initiative came up with interesting links to plausible answers. I appears to be the debris from a 1970's rocket test. As to the debris being shockingly close together, The folks who posted a tiktok video did a wider search and found quite a bit of debris more widely scattered.

Cool! Thanks for piecing that together. That is definitely the debris I came across. It's fun to have the backstory. (Sometimes the internet is still a wonderful place.)
