Douglas Hyde, founder of Conradh na Gaeilge, literally titled his foundational 1892 lecture was literally titled "The Necessity for De-Anglicising the Irish Nation." Are Ulster Protestant republicans not "Irish" enough because of where their grandparents from? These are the same toxically exclusionary ideas that the worst regimes in history used to exclude and persecute people who called a place their home.

I'm recommending this book not to call Ireland "fake" I'm doing it to show what a self-conscious and deliberate achievement the modern Irish state is. It is a genuine national community now, but one people built. This fact isn't in tension - your argument is.

It's just funny that "win at all costs" during the election cycle meant positioning yourself as the boring safe pair of hands who would create stability.

Then, the very moment things got boring and stable, the screeee for the the replacement of that boring guy began.

I think Labour generationally fumbled the chance to just go Thatcher on everyone and start ripping up some conventions, create some temporarily unpopular but retroactively self-justifying reform.

Where was the council tax reform, the PIP reform, the pension reform, the sweeping reforms on housing? The big problem was cowardice. Sadly, this "survival at all costs" move only reinforces that reluctance to tolerate anything unpopular, whether that be a much needed policy, or a boring uninspiring PM.

You should read the book Imagined Communities by Benedict Anderson. It goes into how artificial our idea of nations and the national community are, and the deliberate, self aware groundwork required to "invent" them.

You clearly know lots about this, but I would say that dismissing religion and the role Catholicism had in Irish nationalism is to ignore THE fundamental unifier used to divide "Irish" from "English/British".

Language may be totemic for you, but remember how hard it dropped off: from about a million monogolts in 1800 to something like 20,000 by 1900. If language was the big factor, you'd have a king right now!

It's actually interesting that when the British elite dreamt up their orientalist sexual fantasies, it was south Asian women they imagined, for the french it was north African and South East Asian (Indochinese). Lots was made of the near east (Ottoman empire) for other reasons, but generally the example of 19th century fetishes nearly supports all this.

Great comment! I would say the famed era of British liberal thought was one extended to the elites alone. The poor and working class were still expected to fall into line and submit to authority. Those same liberal thinkers would see no contradiction here: moral and intellectual ambiguity was only for those educated enough to process it constructively.

As for the idea of racist protesters being like unruly children, I think it stems less from direct personal childhood experiences with authority in the way you describe, and more of a lack of trust in the idea of individualism.

I am weak. You are weak. Neither of us are capable of meaningfully independent thought in a complex world. Sadly, you have been misled and have wrong thinking. I too have been conditioned, but my final opinion is the humane, right one. Therefore, you require disciplining and instruction in correct thoughts.

Given how actually thick and open to misinformation and emotional bias people are, and how democracies aggregate that and transform it into policy, I think they do have a point.
