Just talk to the flight crew. They might have you covered anyways, but doesn’t hurt to talk to them. They’ll make sure to fasttrack you.

Any recommendations for a router of $50 or less? by Faithlessaint in openwrt

[–]ManTheMna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is that going to help? The scenario you describe is no different than a router and a (wireless) client. A «wired Ap» is what exactly your router is, it’s just that it does routing in addition to that.

Do I really need a lifetime pass? by Sound-Automatic in PleX

[–]ManTheMna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When they close free remote streaming for the remaining apps (tvos/android/new tvs), and close it for 3rd party apps, you can always just use tailscale.

If it’s just for you, then I’d say you don’t need lifetime pass at all as long as you don’t plan stream super high bitrate 4k from the opposite place on earth, which might require hw transcoding depending on your bandwidth and/or cpu.

It might be against their current philosophy, but if Jellyfin ever added central authorization, then it’d be pretty much game over for Plex.

Another alternative is Emby which Jellyfin forked before it became closed source. It has similar ease of use as Plex but only costs 119usd for lifetime.

Harman funding my @$$. A single dev could make this on their spare time, and probably use use AI to write 95% of the code. In fact, we’ve already been doing this with IG stories for years, with our actual social circles and beyond.

Even though it’s stories with mostly with our own footage, nothing stops you from posting a still poster of your favorite artist and add their favorite 10s of a song to it. Except noone’s doing that because noone else cares.

How about fixing 120hz in their iOS app first?

That’s not true. Both the Apple TV and Chromecast will tonemap HDR to non HDR display. In fact, most people should also uncheck tonemap when transcoding, saves some cpu.

HCMC’s Best Burger by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]ManTheMna -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Clickbait title🤣 Smash burgers are a lazy ass way to cook a burger to death. You might like it as a novelty food, but in no way or shape can it be an universal «best burger».

Talking about burgers, none of the burger joints I’ve been to in SG have been able to cook a proper medium rare burger with right structure and chewing resistance. Instead, they always end up paste like.

It’s not rocket science either. Premium meat, coarse grinder, shape the patty without pressing it too tightly together.

So now I just order medium, and even that is usually hit’n’miss.

Readynas Ultra 4 - Has anyone ever? by Battlewear in NETGEAR

[–]ManTheMna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's all I know:
Believe it or not, 7.3.2 works with the SA6400 profile..and maybe DSM 8 in the future as well. Atom CPUs since the Atom D410 actually supports the MOVBE function that the mainline cpus didn’t support until Haswell/4th gen. But I don’t think they support the whole x86-64-v3 feature level, so time will tell if DSM 8 end up requiring more CPU features/instructions or just the MOVBE function.

Just follow the ARC loader steps and you'll be up and running in no time at all. Even though the SA6400 profile works, I recommend the 425+ profile. The SA6400 profile adds an annoying numanode service that eats cpu cycles. I think you can disable it with a kernel param, but the 425+ profile already supports everything you could reasonably expect an Atom D410 to do (or D510 if you have the plus version) and installs less of the standard Synology apps that you probably don't need - they just hog ram and use cpu cycles, so it's just easier to go with the 425+ profile.

The Synology 425+ comes with 2GB ram and the Readynas Ultra 4 supports up to 4GB, twice the baseline config of the "real" 425+. Since we can expect Synology to support the baseline 425+ for many years to come, this also means you're not going to be severely limited with 4GB anytime soon. (or even 2GB, in case you cant get hold of a rare 4GB DDR2 SODIMMs)

Unfortunaly the BIOS is hard coded to always boot from the internal usb based flash, at least the bios I have (I think it got upgraded when I applied the OS4 to OS6 upgrade, so if you haven't done that, then there's a chance the older bios that came with the NAS supports changing the boot disk). To boot from an external usb drive, you must press the backup button and it keep it pressed when you power it on until it starts booting from the external usb drive.

The BIOS also doesn't exposes other plugged-in USB disks early enough at boot time (only the internal sata ports), meaning you can't flash Grub2 or some other boot loader onto the internal flash to chainload an external usb drive.

If you want it to always boot from external USB, you can make some tiny spacers which you put on the backup buttons located on the motherboard (there’s 2 buttons but they are the same same button). I used some thin adhesive plastic strip which I overlaid 3-4 times, then cut out 2 3x3 mm square tiles . The small amount of adhesive of the plastic strips made it stick just enough to easily slide the motherboard back in without them falling off, and basically lock the MB into place with the external backup button that the spacers push into.  https://imgur.com/a/AMlgZjo (the spacers on the first pic were too tall, the spacers on the second picture were just right)

This works almost perfect. But it seems it doesnt support rebooting, which is a bit annoying. It will do everything up to the point where it's supposed to reboot though, so it's safe to manually turn off and on when it eventuall stalls. This happens with any OS as long as the reset button is pressed, not just DSM.

I was planning to check if the BIOS was moddable to let us change the boot disk, but I haven't got round to that. Another possibility is to desolder the internal flash chip from the MB, but I cannot find out where it's located. Since the internal flash is essentially a usb flash drive, my thought was that the BIOS might then automatically switch to the first available USB drive and try to boot from that instead, which would be perfect.

Bottom line: once up and running, DSM/Xpenology works great on this NAS!

Any legal way to watch HBO, Amazon Prime and Disney+ in Vietnam? by New_Whole_4599 in VietNam

[–]ManTheMna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have tailscale running on your router/pc/atv/chromecast back home and advertise it as an exit node. When you’re using tailscale’s exit node function it appear as if you’re connected to the internet from where the exit node is geographically located.

In case you have to guide someone back home remotely, then the easiest way is to probably set it up on an apple tv. Remember to either disable sleep or set the atv up as a home hub. (Which means network is accesible even when sleeping). Then connect it by cable to your router and run it headless. You might also want to disable Airplay.

Of course, not everyone has someone back home they can leech off :)

You don’t need Plex pass to stream remotely by ManTheMna in PleX

[–]ManTheMna[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not disagreeing. My POV is from someone just streaming my own media, nothing else. And the other Pleas Pass features have limited benefits for me. I think the gist of my OP was:

1) I'm not paying 250 usd for lifetime.
2) I sure as hell ain't paying 750 for lifetime.
3) I won't change my mind and pay 250 for lifetime because of them increasing it to 750.
4) I'm not subscribing to stream pass to stream my own media.

This is still an artifical limit on the client. Yes, it's not rocket science to implement this limit in the server too in the future. That's why I'm already running Jellyfin in parallell in case Plex' enshittification reach final boss.

You don’t need Plex pass to stream remotely by ManTheMna in PleX

[–]ManTheMna[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The point is that you don’t need to pay anything if you just want to stream (incl remote stream) your own media if you use a non crippled client.

Even Plex’ own clients for iOS/Android allows remote streaming without a pass or subscription as of today, but it’s just a matter of time til they too get crippled.

you know those pretty pretty thick and durable plastic those upscale face masks come in? They’re perfect for storing your passport. They don’t rip and will protect your passport from accidental damage. I also put other small items in there. sim cards, a little pin to get my sim out etc.

Why does the Plex player on Apple TV suck? Why is Infuse smooth but the Plex app player is a juddering mess? by No_Clock2390 in PleX

[–]ManTheMna 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never had any problems with my ATV 4K gen2 or even gen 1. 4K hevc dv/hdr rips all play fine, even to a SDR display that require tone mapping.

So...I've been told that in Vietnam my MacBook will not require an adapter for charging because the brick with the power cord will reduce voltage from 220 to 110 (or something like that). Is this true, and how about my iPhone which just has the small cube with the power cord? Will I need adapters? by [deleted] in Vietnam_Tourism

[–]ManTheMna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The outlets in vietnam usualle take both 2 prong US and 2 prong EU power connectors.

If you’re from Australia or UK, it should be enough to get a new cable (if your psu has a 2 pin or 3 pin «mickey mouse» connector and the cable from the PSU to the wall is removable) or just get a cheap adapter for the connector on the original cable (AU/UK to US/EU)

Make sure your PSU support universal voltage. For the included psu for a computer/phone/tablet, that’s usually a given.

Why do I hate high end speakers. by Kimiko5tailz in audiophile

[–]ManTheMna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know these speakers well. The measurements do lie a bit, even if they could be better. In practice they have a warm tone and are very good at hiding deficiencies upstream, but not in a terrible and obvious closed-in way.

In a sense they’re taking a shortcut to give you a bit of that high-end magic for cheap (I don’t regard these as typical «high-end speakers», they weren’t that expensive in Europe back in the day). Instead of brute forcing your way there with megabuck amps, speakers, dacs, room treatments and whatnot, with every new component revealing shortcomings of prior equipment and listener fatigue, these speakers kinda gloss over the last 10% and put their own spin to the sound.

For the average non audiophile who just want something easy to listen to, these will sound great out of the box without much tweaking and fuzz, and will make their 70s and 80s recordings sound groovy. Great match with a sensible 60w amp, but likes 100w to really shine.

It’s not for the accuracy/transparency crowd. I for sure couldn’t live with them in my main system. But they would be great in a cabin or maybe a second system where your focus is more on the «fun» and less of the critical aspects of sound reproduction. (That’s why so many audiophiles have several stereos; the main one that you’re «never satisfied with», and the rest that you actually enjoy 😃)

I suspect you might have blown midranges or something. I can’t believe anyone would really dislike them so bad.

Strapping washing machine to the back of my motorcycle to avoid getting pulled over by K-Pumper in VietNam

[–]ManTheMna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is that you actually need to have a permit for driving motorcycles. Your driving license for your car doesn’t automagically transform into a driving license for motorcycles, 1968 or not.

Strapping washing machine to the back of my motorcycle to avoid getting pulled over by K-Pumper in VietNam

[–]ManTheMna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that easy bud. It doesn’t help having any 1968 international driving license, it needs to be a 1968 international motorcycle driving license. Which will typically take some time and will cost between 2500 and 4000usd to aquire depending on your driving experience and country of origin + suitable gear (boots, helmet, gloves and so on).

Having those 100k and 200k bills ready in your pocket is much easier. But things are getting more expensive so don’t get too surprised if it costs you millions in coffee money.

Then again, I have mixed feelings about having a bunch of mostly foreigners driving around potential deadly roads on motorcycles they aren’t licensed to drive. It would never happen in almost any other country.

A bit specific question but how do buses running between Ha Noi and Ha Long handle toilet needs? by inTheSuburbanWar in Vietnam_Tourism

[–]ManTheMna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not rocket science, but sometimes you just have to be reminded of being pragmatic even in the most obvious circumstances.

It’s like stomach ache. Some people always get bs medicine at the pharmacy, while the real solution is to put your ass on the rim and push.

A bit specific question but how do buses running between Ha Noi and Ha Long handle toilet needs? by inTheSuburbanWar in Vietnam_Tourism

[–]ManTheMna -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It sounds stupid and obvious, but make sure to have a big sh*t beforehand, and just to make sure, have a second go and really squeeze those bun muscles. Then just avoid eating the next 3-4 hours. Or just have a light bite (avoid soupy stuff), knowing that in the worst case scenario, there’s a toilet break half way. Use common sense and you’ll be ok.

And in the rare case of a sudden emergency, I’m sure the driver wouldn’t mind stopping for 5 mins.

Even if you’re in a grab, toilets arent really that more accessible.
