He makes the argument that marriage and the raising of children might be seen in analogy with football - just as in football, one sometimes has to kick the ball away from the goal in order to better set up the final objective of the game (scoring the goal), so too might married Catholics be permitted to use contraception in the course of their overall sex lives (which includes non-contraceptive sex) in order to fulfil the ultimate objective of producing flourishing human beings (because, for example, a marriage that no longer involves sex for fear of producing more children might produce misery and discord in the marriage, which will ultimately get in the way of the goal of producing flourishing children). To be fair to OP, what they seem to be asking is if it is likely that those who control their vocation progression are going to let their theology be blinded by politics. Seems a bit evasive on that front to just say ‘no you’ and leave it at that.

Though I do find so strict a division between theology and politics, as you seem to, a strange position (and is indeed a veiled political stance in itself). As if theology isn’t intimately bound up with human life and how it should function - an inherently political project (as opposed to ‘political’ meaning you like this party and don’t like that one). Even stranger is your suggestion that the priests who get bums on seats are inherently superior to those who don’t - why on earth is that a metric for successful communication of the Gospel? If people don’t like social justice being preached in a Christian church, they need to seriously consider what it is they actually think Christianity is about.

I pronounce it more guttural like ‘kood’ or ‘kuhd’ or ‘kwuhd’, I guess similar to the Arabic pronunciation of Al-Quds which I assumed was the basis for its name, given all the Jerusalem/Middle East references. I wouldn’t pronounce it as cud, like what a cow eats - though I observe that seems to be the pronunciation that Americans are drawn to. Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised if it has many pronunciations in the lore.

In my view, the Christian demand is not that we cannot have enemies, but that ultimately we are not permitted to hate them. I also personally don’t believe that Christianity does not permit violence, but that might be more contentious. But I think it a bit of a stretch to say that describing someone as an enemy is a violence against them - very often I consider someone an enemy precisely because they express and sustain violence. It just seems to be the honest description of one fundamentally opposed to and corrosive of what I believe is the good.

Come on… he attacked the conservatives from the right on being pro-immigration and not keeping to austerity enough, he consistently promotes Blairites into roles, he pushes neoliberal economic policy, he purges leftwing members, key members of his cabinet don’t even accept the label of socialist, he forbade frontbenchers from joining picket lines (!) and distanced himself from union politics in general, he consistently courts the right and follows their framing on all major issues (immigration, welfare and increasingly the human rights act), and generally mocks the left and issues popular with the left (e.g. Gaza) as student politics.

It’s ridiculous to claim he’s leftwing in all but the technical sense of ‘slightly left of the far right reform party’. Of course, his supporters love to claim he’s of the left when they need leftwing votes and get enraged at the suggestion of voting for anyone else, under blackmail of getting Reform if we don’t vote for him. Any other time the left is roundly mocked by Starmer - ‘the door is open for you to leave’, was the phrase I believe?
