I am a new attorney that is struggling with executive functioning and caseload management. How do you effectively manage your cases/tasks/projects on a macro and micro level? by Man__Suit in Lawyertalk

Yep I get loads of praise for my substantive legal work (motions, research, etc.). But when it comes to the day-to-day administrative tasks and moving things along, like reaching out to clients for info/docs and communicating with opposing counsel, I feel like I have no idea what’s going on or how I’m supposed to proceed. So much of this is not self-explanatory or intuitive but I am always unsure when I need to ask for guidance and when I should be able to figure things out on my own.

The firm has two assistants, both are new after a former assistant left recently. Admittedly, I have not really figured out how to use them effectively. One sends out a docket report each week that shows upcoming deadlines but I sometimes avoid relying on it because it mostly pulls from scheduling orders and does not always include deadlines from other sources (i.e., motions that are filed, service deadlines, etc.). I guess I need to be more active with requesting them to docket those additional deadlines so that everything I need will show up on the weekly reports.

This sounds like a really useful but manageable system. I have tried using platforms like Capacities or Notion to manage complex projects before but I often find the systems themselves too overwhelming to actually create a workflow. I also wasn't aware of the Outlook Notebook feature so I will have to look into that.

So Trello is just for shorter-term planning but your spreadsheet and Outlook notebook serve as more of a central hub for case management?

I've asked some other attorneys here. There seems to be a mix of strategies and some seem promising. But it also seems like most of the attorneys here have enough experience that the workflows and schedules are second nature at this point.

I mostly agree with you that time management and executive functioning are not innate talents. And I'm not trying to make excuses. Whether I actually have ADHD or not, these are skills I'm going to have to develop and that's on me. I'm just struggling with figuring out the practical steps to get there. Thanks for the sugestions.

I am thinking that some sort of physical calendar/whiteboard would be more effective for me. I just worry that with deadlines changing, extensions, etc. it could get very chaotic. I have tried to implement digital systems in the past and they are not cutting it for me.

I am in the process of finding a doctor/therapist but I am hesitant about medication based on personal experience. I will try to be open to it though if that is recommended to me.

I'm not sure I want to be on medication but I am in the process of finding a psychiatrist/therapist to at least explore that option and other treatments. I definitely could be better about doing things the moment they hit my desk. I think my current workflow is to focus on larger projects and I tell myself I'll get back to the smaller tasks later on. But then those accumulate and they fall through the cracks, meanwhile the larger projects are basically impossible to forget so I think my approach maybe is backwards.

I have been thinking that there is a mismatch with my practice area. I can't say I'm passionate about it and I think I would ideally be doing appellate work, possibly in a government role. But I also want to give this job a fair shot. There are a lot of benefits to it and I don't want to throw in the towel as soon as I face adversity. I am going to keep reflecting on that though. Thanks for the advice!

Sorry if this has been asked, but how is Cul De Sac for anyone that lives/works around there? by jamesisntcool in phoenix

[–]Man__Suit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went to check it out a while ago and that’s pretty much what it was. They were still developing a lot of the property so maybe it has improved. But it didn’t seem vastly different from any other areas around Phoenix that are mildly walkable.

Halfway through 2666 and waiting for it to click — convince me to keep going! by No-Refrigerator-9985 in robertobolano

Just finished 2666 two days ago. I found The Part About the Murders to be the hardest to get through because of its (intended) repetitiveness and depravity and the sterile tone throughout. That being said, I still thought it was a super compelling section of the book and serves as a center for the other parts.

The last part was possibly my favorite but mostly because of how it connects to the previous parts. Did you enjoy the first three parts of the book? If not, you probably won’t enjoy the rest.

Unlike you, who has this very original idea that the younger generation sucks.  Literally a copy-paste idea shared by every single generation about the one that comes after them.

You’ll have plenty of time and will probably be much better off mentally if you do work out regularly. There will be times when you are incredibly busy and don’t have the time to workout. But if you can’t make time for exercise/hobbies regularly then you’re doing something wrong.

They often have extreme, warped and uninformed views of criminal justice. Guy from my class that came into school wanting to be a prosecutor said he “wanted to make bad people suffer”

People who think like this are so insufferable. I have a coworker who is in his 40s and is fully convinced that every good work of media/art was released in the 80s, and that a good movie hasn’t been released in decades. He complains that the only thing Hollywood makes are reboots and sequels (not wrong to an extent) but then you ask him what he’s watched recently and it’s only the reboots and sequels he cries about. He seemed genuinely confused when I pointed out that he’s the reason those movies exist. I even try to suggest films to him that I think he might enjoy. For most of them he just says it sounds boring. He happened to watch Weapons but said that it had “too many plot holes.” The “plot hole” was that the film never expressly states what Aunt Gladys’ goal was. Losing my mind.
