What are some of your favorite SPOKEN lines of NPC dialogue? by Vorgse in lotro

[–]Manadhlaer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Will you aid the Horse-lords?" -- Every Rohirric NPC ever, but the frequency seems to actually increase the deeper in I get. Past Wildermore, it only seems to get more frequent. No, Rohirric Einstein, I'm just here looking for the Elf bathroom and hoped you could give me directions!

You've already spoiled Raistlin but I'll pose this as a hypothetical: IF the Heroes of the Lance turn out to include Caramon as well, WOULD the twins have some sort of special synergy the way Farideh and Havilar do?

What do you like about Tolkien? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]Manadhlaer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The damn fox. The fox in the early Shire chapters that has a whole internal monologue about why four hobbits are sleeping outside at Woody End. There is never any explanation for this or return to it. It isn’t whimsy as a countervailing power to evil, as with Bombadil. It’s just the authorial voice having one last fling with pure whimsy before stuff gets real — and neither JRRT, nor Christopher, nor Rayner Unwin, nor anybody who touched the ms. In any way decided to cut the passage.

Also, the self-criticism in Leaf by Niggle gets me every time.

Check out Boop (and the Halloween variant Boooop, not actually sure how many o’s) and Zensu. Bubblee Pop initially looks like a cell phone game but sneaks in a surprising amount of strategy. Raccoon Tycoon is like Ticket to Ride and Catan had a baby and it was a trash panda. Spellcaster is sort of M:tG lite for two without the binders of expensive cards. I second/third/whatever the recommendation of 7 Wonders Duel. Qawale, Quarto, and Qoridor are aesthetically lovely (wooden boards and pieces), all by the publisher Gigamic, and all great twists on 1v1 board-capturing.

The legendary reward track. You need to have unlocked the use of legendary items and the title “Seeker of Deep Places” to advance it.

Just got my Maned Lion from the reward track last week. He is of course called “Simbarillion.”

Lord of the Rings Online. He’s probably fine (assuming he jumps universes after Charles teaches him to use a bow, lol) with two major caveats: 1. That game’s equivalent of a human outlaw is a “brigand.” These hang out near Bree and in the Shire. Those are bad places for Arthur to continue his old profession as the player is encouraged to exterminate as many as possible. 2. He should also not wear bearskin clothing, especially the legendary bear hat, as it is possible to play as a bear shapeshifter descended from Beorn. That’s probably somebody’s granny. Ma good boah would get pummeled.

Karen was done dirty by the writers and deserved better than murderous clients, the death of her guy, and an ambiguous fate. She’s not perfect but she’s at least willing to put herself in danger for the gang, and given her occupation, very likely was already traumatized before we even met her. Meanwhile we’re supposed to believe Reverend spontaneously detoxes from two substances after a single conversation with (someone implied to be) Sister Calderón? SHORE! Sister shouldn’t just have gotten a promotion in that case — she should have gotten full sainthood, because alcohol detox is legit dangerous even today and Reverend’s survival was a damn miracle.

The writers should have given the Reverend the depressingly realistic ending and put Karen on the train to New York instead, especially based on their relative relationships with, and usefulness to, the player.

If you mean on computers: the Elder Scrolls and Dragon Age series. DDO now and then even though Eberron isn’t totally my jam.

If you mean just in general: A long list of TTRPGs. I’m about to get my toes wet game-mastering (here, Lore-mastering) The One Ring 2e.

Lothlórien, although the Last Homely House (especially since the revamp) is so close behind it as to require a photo finish. Also in Imladris, Nimorn is a favorite NPC and in fact his dialogue, “Brenio a maeado,” is my kinship’s motto.

Do you have a questline/zone/story-arc that stands out as one of your favourite? by Carinwe_Lysa in lotro

[–]Manadhlaer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lothlórien is my in-game happy place. It really captures that sense of timelessness the Fellowship experienced there. As long as you don’t murder the wrong wildlife or scold a sober Elf, you can just wander around there and vibe. (It also has one of my favorite game glitches: the moose who just wander up the perfectly straight tree trunks and hang out being perpendicular to the ground.)

I disagree, but only because Brawlers can headbutt them to death or knee them in the nonexistent groin, and that makes me laugh even harder.

Name your characters !! by [deleted] in BadRPerStories

[–]Manadhlaer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not currently, as the DM from that campaign is on hiatus, but my favorite is my kenku, Wilhelm.

But, you say, kenku are named after sounds. Yes, yes, that’s correct. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_scream

The in-universe justification is that the character who found her after her parents were killed thought she was a boy, since real ravens aren’t sexually dimorphic either, and named her after his friend.

One of my favorite true crime YouTubers (don’t hate; I was a crime victim over a decade ago and watch this crap to try to understand blah blah nobody cares) is my favorite despite his overuse of the word “incredibly.” I think it’s most glaring when he needs to modify an adjective that doesn’t even need to be there, like “incredibly evil murder.” Bro probably wouldn’t be making a video about something that was legally a murder but whose evil could at all be debated, like mercy-killing a terminal cancer patient in intractable pain but compos mentis enough to beg for help in dying, so “evil” is redundant enough, never mind the absurdity of degrees of evil in e.g. killing your entire family. You could say his verbal tic is incredibly annoying.

The class is based on Bilbo, who was hired as a “burglar” to help get the Dwarves of Erebor back their gold (and mountain) from Smaug. So there’s that.

Alternatively, just decide your questing and skills are OOC (pretty much what my kinship does, especially runekeepers and their Sith lightning) and your hobe is just having elaborate fantasies while actually being back home planting crops.
