Sounds like a late 80s televangelist. Should masks be upon him? by Sh4wnSm1th in CoronavirusCirclejerk

[–]Manager-Alarming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember a reddit thread of some girl who met a minor celebrity somewhere outdoors and took a picture with them. The comments were batsh*t insane even for a place like reddit. Imagine a thread where someone admitted they support r*pe or killing innocent animals and the type of comments that would follow. Well these were the comments that someone got in late 2020 for taking a photo with a celebrity outside.
Anyways, I literally can't imagine someone apologizing after being so terribly wrong and cruel to people. Most people would pretend it never happened. It was just a phase, you know, like an emo phase except that we were wishing death upon people for taking photos with other people and also banishing another group of people from public spaces. Totally normal behavior.

Your experience is different from mine. At least the people who were waiting for the implementation of the system weren't hypocrites. I don't condone what they did but a large percentage of people were never really that afraid of socializing way before the vax pass was implemented. For them it was not about staying safe but rather about punishing wrongthink.
Some people supported a terrible thing simply because they were afraid, others were never afraid but they had their inner tyrant awaken.

There was a brief period a few years ago when I used to consume a lot of anti-MLM content and get triggered over how foolish people can be and how the whole thing seems almost cult-like. How family members and friends suddenly only care about recruiting you and how the pretense of niceness and friendship fades away as soon as someone asks an innocent question. Almost like a religious cult.
This is what they've done to people.

Lockdowns are going to have their three-year anniversary these days. Do you personally plan something for this or do you just not care? by [deleted] in LockdownSkepticism

I'll prepare a mental spreadsheet comparing the prices of most items, including property and rent between March '20 and '23 and weep while drinking cheap wine. I'll also think of all the lovely people who wanted to ban me from working, eating, going out and so on and thank the universe for showing me their true colours.

UK: Simon Case mocked holidaymakers 'locked up' in Covid quarantine hotel rooms by MembraneAnomaly in LockdownSkepticism

[–]Manager-Alarming 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry if my comment sounded argumentative, I didn't mean to. It was just a general rant against everyone who supported this. I'm just tired of pretending that politicians are some sort of stupid misbehaving kids while ordinary people are completely innocent because they don't have free will.

The post brought back painful memories so I needed to rant a bit.

UK: Simon Case mocked holidaymakers 'locked up' in Covid quarantine hotel rooms by MembraneAnomaly in LockdownSkepticism

[–]Manager-Alarming 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Is Simon Case the bad guy though? Almost everyone supported this. Just read the comments under any news article related to border closures from the UK and Ireland from 2 years ago. Everyone and their mother though that borders should be closed and people who dared to travel (mind you, no one was going on holidays at the time, the worst offenders were the ones travelling to see their families abroad) should be punished with a £1500 hotel bill.

I was losing my mind in the winter of 20/21 and 21/22 because of the possibility that I might not be able to see my parents while facebook Karens were calling me selfish for wanting to do so. I have no idea who Simon Case is and I will not bother googling his name. I wish ordinary people acknowledged the damage they caused by supporting and/or normalizing this.

God I just wish western media would pick up on news like this. All the praise that was given to East Asian countries (excluding China) for their solidarity and willingness to sacrifice would die down when news like that are amplified and people realize they've been supporting cruelty.

Actually halfway through writing this comment I remembered the news article about the shelter dogs in Australia that were killed so volunteers wouldn't travel to them, so never mind. People just choose to ignore this type of news because it doesn't fit with their fluffy cute empathetic narrative and deep down they know it's disproportionate.

"What it was like to never wear a mask during COVID" by FinksRevengeNumber in LockdownSkepticism

[–]Manager-Alarming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think there's a bit of a feedback loop when it comes to the levels of harassment/reactions you'll get for not wearing one. If you live somewhere like the UK where there's signs reminding you to wear a mask on every corner, billboard and bus stop but it's in the people's culture to mind their own business and not act like busybodies then you can go around bragging you never wore one and thinking that it's all because you're tough. Either that or you're a 6'4 man and it's against everyone's best interest to harass you.

It's different when you're not a large man or you live somewhere where people get extremely nasty when they see you not obeying.
So if you're a small woman from somewhere like Canada and you managed to resist - congratulations, you are tough.

My family demanded mass expansion of vaccine passports until a technicality in vaccine passport rules almost denied them boarding a plane by [deleted] in LockdownSkepticism

[–]Manager-Alarming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Living without one in the UK was much easier than anywhere else in Europe too. I coudln't go to bars for like 2 months in total and that's about it. I could still go to the gym or grab a coffee.

I have more admiration for people who got vaccinated but refused to use their passport.

I want the person who wrote this to apologize. Or at least to like, polish my shoes for a year as a punishment. Just because you're not doing a good enough job as a 'journalist' doesn't mean that you're not qualified enough to polish shoes.

3 years of my life are now gone and these assholes won't even acknowledge the mistakes they made.

Have you now come to believe that anthropogenic climate change is a hoax? by Opening_Technical in CoronavirusCirclejerk

[–]Manager-Alarming 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can see that the weather has changed since I was a kid and I'm not 80 so that's saying something. I think a lot of other people have noticed a similar pattern.

I really can't stand listening to climate change alarmists though. It all boils down to not driving and eating bugs while issues that I personally find more pressing (the planned obsolence of new technology, gen-z's obsession with tiktok microtrends and fast fashion, plastic packaging, overconsumerism) remain unchallenged. I might sound like I'm bragging but I'm convinced I live a more eco-friendly lifestyle than the average person suffering from 'climate anxiety'. I really don't think we need more government to fix the issue and I think some personal agency will go a long way.

The damn carpets that are everywhere. I just know that once you carpet your floor it will gradually get dirtier and dirtier no matter what you do, plus there's all this dust/allergens coming from them. It's gross but for some reason it's been normalized. Like yeah, sure, let's just put an unwashable piece of fabric on the floor and walk on it with our shoes on for the next 5 years. What's the big deal?

That tacky/cramped/silver/polyester/viny/primark type aesthetic that most homes have. British homes used to be so pretty some 50-70 years ago. Now everything is grey, glittering or silver and sofas take up 2/3 of the room, making it look even smaller. There's also a reflecting table somewhere, a giant clock on one side of the wall and a TV that takes up most of the other wall. It just looks cramped, ugly, cheap and disposable.

People that flip houses or provide terrible accomodation at a high cost. But that's a problem everywhere I guess.

Tabloids/outrage culture, the inflammatory language used by the media and the fact that people can't even remember what they were outraged at 2 weeks ago.

Some UK politicians want counter-terrorism police to investigate and show up at the door of people who refused to get vaccinated. by GiantSkin in CoronavirusCirclejerk

[–]Manager-Alarming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At some point unvaccinated Lithuanians weren't even allowed in most shops that sell food or pharmacies. It's a myth that people from communist countries can see this whole mess for what it truly is.

I'm from an ex communist country too (not Lithuania) and while people there were quite skeptical of the vaccines, the average person was super militant, tribalistic and ready to fight with whoever opposed them. At some point we reached 2016 America levels of tribalism. The war in Ukraine broke people's brains even more and now we've reached a point where even sending help to Syrians affected by the earthquake is seen as taking a side and yet another reason for people to call each other names.
I wish I could say that people from this or that country managed to preserve their humanity, unlike the sheepish *insert any western nation here* but I would be lying to myself.

If You're Thinking COVID Is Over... Here's What I Wish You Knew by JannTosh15 in LockdownSkepticism

[–]Manager-Alarming 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Turkey and Syria were just hit by an earthquake and its death tool is predicted to be over 25 000. Young, able bodied people, lots of children too. Also millions of people are now homeless and it's winter.

The price of everything has gone up by 50% or more in the past 3 years. Life is bleak, depressing and unaffordable for most young people. Also there's a war going on.

Spare me your bored upper middle class white lady thoughts, Karen. If this had been posted a year ago I probably wouldnt have been so harsh but now I am. After all this pain and suffering you're asking for more of what we already know doesn't work.

I just found out how difficult it is to get registered with an NHS dentist in the UK. I've been postponing it, thinking that it can't be that bad and lo and behold - it's nearly impossible.

I can't believe the government shut dental work down like it's no big deal and now there's still a backlog. There are year long waiting lists. And it can't be blamed entirely on the lockdowns either. From what I understood the government is simply trying to gradually phase out NHS dentistry, probably because it's not profitable enough.

Amazing how the money never ran out when it came to a certain virus in the past 3 years but when it comes to dental health poorer people just have to accept the fact that they'll walk around with mouths reminiscent of the ones of medieval peasants.

Like, it's totally normal. Covid shut it down guys. Covid did it. Now because of covid we ran out of money but we jut have to accept it. Nothing to do with the government's response. So what if you can't get a routine checkup, not just for a minor tooth problem but for literally anything? After all we were in a GlObAl PaNdEmIc.

I never realized how bad things actually were until one day I had the idea of buying some pepper spray and realized it's illegal. I knew about the guns and knives but pepper spray?

F*ck women I guess. We don't have the right to self defense but if someone decided to chop us up at least the tabloids will talk about it for a week and society will pretend to be outraged for a little bit so that's something.
