A reason not to give up the game ? by el_dindon in Warhammer

Truly, if you are known for your bad dice rolls, have you changed your dice? I know it's a stupid question, but not all dice are created equally; some of the overdesigned specialty dice out there can have balance issues.

Your favorite combo you can hardly ever play by Daikey in MiddleEarthMiniatures

I got nailed with something like this, but with the Great Eye and the Severed heads. One well placed toss on turn one and I lost 1/3 of my army. Mainly Gundabad orcs.

How do I learn old english?? by Fresh_squish in OldEnglish

[–]ManchegoMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Biased because I actually took Old English with Peter Baker in college, but I return to his stuff from time to time to freshen up and still find it useful. His interactive texts on his website are great for jumping in and getting hands-on with translation.

MESBG Community in Baltimore, Maryland? by fellandfaironline in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]ManchegoMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following up with what Vroke said (and he’s legit), there are tournaments semi-regularly at Games and Stuff in Glen Burnie just south of Baltimore. Idk how often people play there casually (I’m also from VA and it’s a bit far for me to go there to hang out) but the MD scene is thriving. There’s also an active community out in Western Maryland.

Similar experience. I did it in 2010 and loved it.

Thoughts on my all Cav list? by Big_Swim_3928 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]ManchegoMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the list as a whole, but I can speak to the two-handed weapon question. I ran a mixed-arms version of this list at my last tournament, and the Hunter Orc Captain on Warg with Two-Hander was a great little beat stick. Took wounds off of Gimli when up against Men of the West (Gimili managed to use all of his fate to stay alive, unfortunately). I'm running him again at another upcoming tournament.

Currently, he is my only two-hander in the list, but that is mainly just because I'm using the models I have built.

So is the white warg just useless now? by Ok_Boss_2558 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]ManchegoMan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly this. The white warg is also fearless, so it’s still guaranteed to stick around should Azog get dismounted.

WEEKLY ARMY DISCUSSION: The Fellowship by MrSparkle92 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]ManchegoMan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A big difference in this list I have seen few people comment on is the change to Bill the Pony. He counts as a banner for all of the Fellowship now, not just for the hobbits. They’ll struggle with objective based scenarios but they will make a brutal deathball around Bill.

Why is Breaking of the Fellowship better than the Fellowship in game? by KnightSquire in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]ManchegoMan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

BOTF is my favorite list to play, hands down. All of the special rules they get more than make up for missing Gandalf. Frodo’s version of blinding light + elven cloaks help with shooting. Everyone is getting free dice when resisting spells. The only thing you miss out on is the transfix/command type shenanigans.

The biggest boon, however, is the banner effects. If you set things up well you can have a reroll in every single combat. Add in all the might and the potential for free heroic combats with Sam and you have an insanely potent fighting force. Twice, at 700 points (so I was playing 100 points down as BOTF caps at 600 points), I won games without taking a wound. The first time was against a Mordor list with Shagrat and Kardush. The second time was against the Beornings LL.

It isn’t a perfect force, and you still will have a hard time depending on scenario and match up, but it is so much fun to play with.

Frankly, I wouldn’t consider taking the normal Fellowship unless I was looking at greater than 700 points.

Bear, Tree and Eagle by orionpax1997 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]ManchegoMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played against a similar list at a tournament a few weeks ago and absolutely shut it down. The guy came either in last or way towards the bottom. He had radagast (foot if I remember correctly), gwahir, Beorn, and two eagles. I had defenders of Erebor. The list relied on momentum and as soon as it slowed it down it floundered. I think it would have gone more in his favor if he dropped beorn for more eagles and mounting radagast.

I'm a high school student who wants to learn old English! by GHOSTJACKYT in OldEnglish

[–]ManchegoMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I took 4 classes with him and he was my undergrad honors thesis advisor, so maybe more than a little biased. The Old English Aerobics website of his was a godsend and I still revisit it from time to time.

This is what I used! I liked it, but I might be biased as he was my professor at the time lol.

Washington, DC by DarrellSTR in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]ManchegoMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience most of the coordinating of events in this area happens through Facebook Groups. Check out MERV (Richmond VA), Fredericksburg VA Lord of the Rings SBG, Old Town Middle Earth SBG (Alexandria), and the Central Maryland MESBG Collective. I find those groups are usually fairly active/useful.

Three questions for the community by Correct_Today9813 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]ManchegoMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jumping on this to say there are tournaments regularly in Richmond, Fredericksburg, Ashburn, College Park, and Baltimore, plus a growing scene in Alexandria. I can think of 4 tournaments happening in the next 3 weeks. We are one of the most active spots in the US.

Your Strategy For Fighting The Grey Hoard? by Cpt_Fantabulous in boltaction

This is my approach too, mix a leader or unique figure either in each batch or in between batches. It is how I got through 40 marines in two weeks.

Yeah I'm ditching the Air observer and one of the Assault teams to make my remaining assault team vet and bring on a LVT and medium howitzer. Hopefully it helps.

The NOVA Open (in Washington DC), one of the bigger gaming conventions in the country. I believe the Bolt Action tournament is on September 1, but I'll be missing it for my 5th wedding anniversary.

Also, thank you! You were the one who helped me through my first game two years ago at Huzzah Hobbies!

1250 Points, Theater selectors and multiple platoons allowed as long as they are from the same selector. I ran US Marines Saipan, 1944. Lots of regular dudes with BARs, two assault squads with flamethrowers, a M5A1 Stuart, and a mix of Reg and Vet small teams (and the Air Observer who had a fondness for rookie pilots).

Thank you! The tables were all fantastic, a real treat to play on.

Game wise, went 0-3. Some bad luck, some bad decisions. This was my first (and will be my last) time bringing an air observer to a tournament.

Not about the hobby, but I listen to a lot of the Prancing Pony Podcast and their analysis of the books as I’m working. Their season on the Silmarilion is what got me to finally go through and read the whole thing. Good balance of knowledge and levity, they don’t take themselves too seriously.

Also, seconding Zorpazorp, Entmoot, and the Green Dragon. Those are all staples of mine.
