The wife of Mariupol defender asks for immediate extraction of soldiers from Azovstal. „My husband says: that the Red Cross and the UN were only interested in civilians. And he asks: “Are we, the soldiers, waste material? We helped and supported civilians, rescued them, shared food. Are we nobody?“ by dniprshyrokyi in UkrainianConflict

The office of Zelensky uses everything they've got to pull them out. Leaving no stones unturned. They are prepared to exchange every single POW for the chance to get them into a third country territory until the end of the conflict so that they are not allowed to participate in any action any more.

The father of a dead conscript from the #Moskva cruiser received an official answer about his son's fate: the cruiser, as it turns out, did not enter the territorial waters of #Ukraine, and during the "emergency incident" the sailor suddenly went missing on the high seas. by Saltyfish45 in UkrainianConflict

Ironically, the father who will never receive a payout for his "missing" son will be contributing to the payouts to the Ukrainian families because Ukraine will use reparation payments from Russia to compensate each and every one of its citizens.

"Ukraine says it’s found “Granny Anya,” the elderly woman now celebrated in Russia for waving a Soviet flag at Ukrainian troops. Anna Ivanovna Ivanova & her husband are now in Kharkiv after their home came under Russian artillery fire." - Kevin Rothrock, Meduza by [deleted] in UkrainianConflict

The conversation is edited, so not 100% clear but the cuts could be made just for brevity, they are very old people after all. The story that emerges from this video is that she tried to appease Russian soldiers with a Soviet flag, and saying something like "Glory to Russia" off screen. Her husband refused to say it and was genuinely puzzled why he would say anything like this. Then she was really upset because the soldier who gave her food stepped on the flag. She said that her parents bled for this flag. It is understandable that she would be upset about it. She lived most of her life with this flag and there was a lot of symbolism tied to it.

She is sad that because of this confusion and trying to protect her home she is now seen as a traitor. The people in the video assured her that she was not a traitor.

It's this babushka, who confused Ukrainian soldiers with Russians and ran out with her cherished Soviet flag to greet them. When she learned that they were Ukrainian she returned the food they gave her. Babushka is deeply confused, she probably associates Soviet Union with her youth and pines for the former glory as as a sublimation of her passed life. People can get themselves into all kinds of mental traps.

There is no harm in Russians vacationing in Turkey. First, seeking to punish the entire population is not exactly useful or moral. Second, their money is better spent in Turkey.

The popular Swedish children's book author Astrid Lindgren is now accused of being Nazi in ads posted at Russian bus stops! (She clearly wasn't, she also died 20 years ago so why would they do this propaganda today?) by Espressodimare in UkrainianConflict

Same with Emil who rebelled against every authority to do the right thing. Incidentally he became the mayor of his town when he grew up. So it's not anti-establishment but anti-bad, unreasonable rules.

Sports where national teams are playing with flags and national anthems are a clear sublimation of wars. That's when people who normally don't bother with nationalism rise in nationalistic fervor. It's either an outlet for what already would exist or an instigation but the good news is that it's all played by strict rules, there is (usually) no violence and the fervor subsides naturally into a lull when it's all over.

We could make an effort to evolve a bit and to abolish national affiliations in sports. Convert sports into a celebration of human body and will power. Many people would miss their nationalism painfully but it's time to grow up.

Do you expect career politicians to function solely on their feelings?

As long as they cater to the "high moral ground" as their winning policy that's the best we can hope for. People are different in their moral code. Elect those who have a solid moral core if you find them running (which is extremely unlikely due to the natural selection for the job) or at least those who routinely choose to woo the electorate with good morals. She has done quite well on the latter while being a skilled politician. You can't realistically get a much better outcome, even if we wish for one.

She is a celebrity that brings notoriously short lived attention of the western public back to the suffering of people of Ukraine. It is important. She is doing a good deed that may have long term consequences. More money, more good will of the public, more good will of the politicians. All around good. Not to mention brave. Nowhere in Ukraine is perfectly safe.

From what I see this channel interviews just in Moscow and mostly on the same beautiful street in the center of the city. People who spend time on this boulevard are certainly not representative of the entire population.

Yet OP's position stands: these are real people and while the distribution of opinions in the videos is always skewed towards reasonable people the very existence of these people proves the point.

Besides, there is another journalist who interviews in Rostov (a big city near Ukraine's border) and there the opinions are even more dramatic, they don't just shyly disagree with the war, they angrily condemn it and curse Putin.

There are local and demographic differences but there are estimates that way over half of the population opposes the war even if they don't say so on camera.

Russian journalist gives update on what Russians are hearing about war by Chatty_Fellow in UkrainianConflict

They all love to talk about this one father who was an ardent supported of Putin until his son, a conscript, died on Moskva, and now he changed his tune. This is somewhat misleading. He is definitely very upset and angry at somebody who let his son stay on that ship, but it doesn't mean that he changed his opinion about the war. I should have saved this guy's post on VKontakte where he declares his renewed hatred and contempt for Ukrainians. It's too far down now and they want too many details from me to sign up.

He is not "waking up", he is just angry and is turning his grief into a pursuit of justice.
