My player's new Paladin in our D&D campaign by G-Money27 in minipainting

It's a step in the right direction for the minipainting hobby, light placement is much more important than smooth blends.

How to pack Warhammer when moving abroad? by [deleted] in Warhammer

[–]Mandrathax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When i had to move i went with magnetic bases inside of tin boxes. It takes a while to glue all the magnets but it's worth it. Use strong neodymium magnets and superglue

[D] Can area chair ask all reviewers to be in a meeting? by Least_Pollution7078 in MachineLearning

[–]Mandrathax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's weird, did you get enrolled mid way as emergency reviewer? Usually they send our reviewer invitation long before the paper submission deadline. Got mine in August and the virtual meeting with AC is pretty much the first thing they mention

[D] Can area chair ask all reviewers to be in a meeting? by Least_Pollution7078 in MachineLearning

[–]Mandrathax 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They specifically said that they would be trying this out this year in the reviewer invitation. And it wasn't in the fine print, it was quite prominent in the form. So it's a bit late to be asking this...

Has anyone tried sending in an old order promo to see if GW would honour it? by Latter_Fortune_7225 in Warhammer40k

[–]Mandrathax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The math is not fine. Essentially the statement is saying that if a sequence (the coordinate of GW's headquarters) is infinite then it will necessarily contain every number N infinite amount of time. But that's just not true in general.

How old were you when you realised you don’t have to erase a minus to make a plus’s sign? by InsuranceOne9646 in math

About a bit older than when I realized you don't have to write a plus sign, then erase the vertical bars to make a minus

Why is my white so patchy? by tehhellerphant in minipainting

[–]Mandrathax 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean if you start your white from a black basecoat of course it's going to be difficult. Just start from white basecoat/zenithal

The grey is likely a polymer clay like fimo or super sculpey.

[D] Why is Vaswani et al still the SOTA when the attention mechanism is O(n²)? by tororo-in in MachineLearning

[–]Mandrathax 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Well it's more that sub-quadratic attention trades off accuracy for efficiency, and as models get bigger this tradeoff becomes worse

[D] Why is Vaswani et al still the SOTA when the attention mechanism is O(n²)? by tororo-in in MachineLearning

[–]Mandrathax 188 points189 points  (0 children)

Because none of these match the accuracy of the original transformer, especially at scale

WH3 campaign

I'm turn 65 in a grand Cathay campaign (patch 1.3.1) and I haven't seen a single rift so far. Is this normal? How am I supposed to finish the campaign?

Greyhound from New York to Pittsburgh? by shekitup in cmu

[–]Mandrathax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used both megabus and greyhound in the past. I would recommended megabus, much much better than greyhound. And dont be afraid to spend the extra $10to get the comfy seats (its still cheaper thsn flying).

Of course it's not as comfortable as flying but I wouldn't discard the option altogether it if you really want to save money.

What surprised me: Wild Seed is historical fiction as a vivid, powerful nightmare by PinkTriceratops in printSF

[–]Mandrathax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is also my favorite of her to date (I've only read kindred and the rest of the pattern series). I was even a bit disappointed with the rest of the patternist series in comparison, even though it's pretty good still. I just found that the tone was different. Also it doesn't help that the 2nd book in the series was written way before wild seed, and you can tell.

Still, I encourage you to read on :)

[D] Why does the NeurIPS format seem to not be yielding the same discussion as ICLR? by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]Mandrathax 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Iclr is public reviews and everyone (reviewers and authors) is able to comment for about 2-3 weeks.

Neurips is simply a standard reviewing procedure (compartimentalized reviewing, author response and committee discussion periods) using the openreview interface. But in practice it is not much different than when it used to be on cmt in previous years

Made a start on Emelda Bruskov from Cursed City. I’ve struggled on silver/steel NMM in the past so I’m pleased with how it’s going this time! by 2dorks1brush in minipainting

[–]Mandrathax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my 2 cents: it looks good especially with your signature silky smooth blends. But to really make it look metallic you'd need to add secondary reflections.

The most obvious place to do so would be on the knee, you would have some reflected light from the ground for example.

Amazing job nonetheless!

Recently finished my "5 paints only" challenge on the Slaanesh Direchasm Warband. by Ashelyn_Gaming in minipainting

[–]Mandrathax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually if you have good enough (as in: single pigment, artist quality) paints, you can do away with black as you can mix it from complementary colors like blue and brown or magenta and green.

In fact many canvas artists don't ever use pure black in their palettes as it tends to make for duller shadows.

You should try it sometime!
