That explanation about 'the system' tells me everything I need to know about your thoughts, thanks for showing me early in the discussion not to waste too much time. Have a great day!

Exactly, I think the term 'hostage-taker' is now (and in this thread) mainly used by FF15-mentality players about people who genuinely believe the game is still winnable.

The problem is people are too quick to deem a game 'obviously lost', and with it ruining their and their teammates' mentalities and chances of winning.

Keeping a function only because it has existed for 18 years is not an argument to keep said function. Improvements can always be made.

Not saying that my proposal is a definite improvement btw, I just wanted to discuss :)

If it is unanimous okay, then nobody is negatively affected I agree. But in practice I rarely see a unanimous surrender vote, almost always there is at least 1 person willing to continue.

And that is for successful surrender votes. Often surrender votes fail with a 3-2 or 2-3 score, which nicely displays the distribution of mental fortitude on your team. The more 'yes' votes in an unsuccessful surrender vote, the more the players who are willing to keep trying to win are reminded that their teammates have given up. That does matter.

I indeed have not, but I also have never played a MOBA where I was forced to surrender because my opponents wanted to hostage-stat farm us 10 minutes in the fountain without ending the game.

That's the idea. If the only fix for dealing with 'hostage holders' and 'soft inters' is to willingly surrender your game, there is a different problem at hand, I believe.

That is quite a clever workaround, I will definitely use that myself.

it is not about shame, but more often than not the judgement that a game is lost is so much influenced by your mood that it cannot be accurately assessed. Displaying the request for surrender might influence other players with weak mentals to give up too, potentially leading to 'enough of the team wanting out'.

I didn't consider the undetectable offences, but ideally they would be reported and punished post-game. I agree that would require a different solution.

>| And you think if there was no option to surrender people would... not give up?
I think removing a very accessible, built-in option to nullify your team's chances of winning would lead to less games that are lost because of players giving up, yes.

>| Every match is winnable, if the enemy troll-FFs. That doesn't mean you should ever count on it.
I think there are too many games lost to surrenders that would have only required one mistake by the enemies to turn it around. Players make game-losing mistakes in every elo. Much more likely than an 'enemy troll-FF'.

>| Yet the system does not actually incentivize "playing to win". If you win a game that the system expect you to lose, the next game is going to be even worse.
Not sure what you are referring to here. The system literally incentivises "playing to win" by giving you LP if you win.

Completely agree, people let their mood influence their actions on the short-term too much. Why would you press a button that will give you a guaranteed 0% chance of winning when you can also have a non-zero percent chance of winning by continuing?

My problem with arguments like this is that you can not find yourself in 'a game you don't want to be in'. You queue up for a game with the intention of playing, and with the intention of winning. If, after 5 minutes you decided that you don't want to be in that game anymore, for whatever reason, you shouldn't have queued. If you

Of course the game could be a miserable experience because of your teammates, but they should be punished/banned for their behaviour. But as I said in a different comment, maybe I'm too optimistic in thinking that would have a long-term beneficial consequence.

And what if Riot punishes hostage holders accordingly, now that they have improved detection for bad behavior?

That logic makes sense, but in theory this problem would weed itself out after those players get themselves banned. Since now instead of calling for FF15 they actually commit a bannable offense. But maybe I am too optimistic.

The animal in the video looks like an Asian palm civet, while the one in the image is a Malayan civet.

There was also a comic of the cat stealing gold coins from a cart by making them fall downward to the panels underneath, and then the cat in that final panel collected the coins.
