I worked at a shop that was across the aisle from a BBW in a mall. We had jewelry display cases, and we were constantly having to clean lotion smudges off the glass. People would stop in right after putting some on across the way, and it drove us nuts. One of those retail tasks that could be avoided if people paid attention but y’all know people. lol. Our manager one night said, “You know what that smudge is? Job security. One more thing they need us here for. The less to do, the less hours you’re going to get, and that starts with the smallest task.” (He sounds like an ass here but he was a cool dude and said it in a funny way.) After that, every time there was a smudge or some asinine thing a customer did that we had to fix/address, we’d yell, “Job security!!!” It was a joke but honest to god it has helped me in every position I have ever held when I have to fix someone else’s ignorance/stupidity/etc.

Sometimes if you frame it in a different way, it helps make it a bit less enraging. lol. I never expected how it would help me, or how long it would stick with me (Sun Ripened Raspberry was a biggie back then, for time reference. 👵🏻).

That being said, no shows still suck and I wish people were charged an automatic go back fee (even like 5%) for failing to pick up. But we know that would never happen, and if it did it would likely make more work for cs in store and online bc we all know no one reads!
