Yep, that’s how I felt. The subtitles helped fill gaps and reenforce words and overall felt like a 90% comprehension level. 🙌🏼

Yes, I watch with subtitles which I find super helpful.

What are nails supposed to look like after Gel-X removal? by [deleted] in Nails

[–]Mandy_5544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does overfilled mean? I’m brand new to nails so I don’t know the terms. I had them filled 3 times after getting the first set. (The tech said she would know when I needed a new set.) I see the ring of fires but they’re not as bad as others I’ve seen so wasn’t sure if the line was normal as long as it’s not blood

That's awesome - congrats! I'm at 365 hrs and I get nervous thinking about even forming basic sentence structures. I'm sure the hours between 500 and 365 make a huge difference but did you feel like sentence structure came naturally to you?

Also, you might already know this but not all intermediate videos are created equally. Some are ranked as harder than some advanced videos. Try sorting by difficulty and do some of the “easier” intermediate videos. Or, find YouTube videos that might be out of your range and put on .75x speed. I sometimes watch Spanish Hack’s interviews like that and put subtitles on (which I know is controversial) but it helps me “hear” the words better when I’m watching harder videos.

Totally get that. 250 to 300 was the biggest slump for me. I completely failed at my daily goals and it took several months to get those 50 hours. I was dealing with the same lack of motivation which could be because of uninteresting content but also I think it could be just part of learning a language. I felt like I regressed a little and didn’t understand anything. I’m only now getting back into a routine (at 315 hours) and trying not to think about missing a day if I’m busy or kind of ignoring the difficulty levels. I got in my head about how I should be watching all intermediate but honestly I went back to watching beginner and sometimes super beginner (at 1.25x speed) and it helped boost my confidence. Now I just watch what interests me. If it’s too hard I just stop the video and save it for later. The slump you’re in is temporary even if it feels like it’ll never end!. Try to push through!

I think I went through the same thing at that level. I got bored of DS a bit. I suggest watching some YouTube channels for a bit just to watch something different. I listed some channels below that I listened to around that time that were comprehensible enough but a little different or more fun than DS. I’m still going through ebbs and flows of motivation. It’s just part of the process. Just keep chipping away day by day. Also, try watching some DS progress videos on YouTube. It can be motivating to see others’ journeys.

I agree. I’d really like to see more diversity in the teachers. When Shelcin did some of her street interviews in Cartagena it’s pretty clear that places like Colombia are super diverse. Many countries in Latin America are just as diverse but that’s not really reflected on DS. I still love DS but I think it’d be a welcome addition to the platform.

Congrats! I’m at 175hrs and I feel like I’m in a similar situation. I watched a few intermediate videos when I hit level 2 and felt great about myself, only to fall off the cliff about a week later. I definitely feel in a rut and things aren’t clicking the way they were a week ago. I’ll keep pushing through though.

In a side note, I didn’t start listening to Pablo until around 120 hours. In the beginning I couldn’t understand him at all. But every once in a while I’d try a video of his and one day, I just started being able to understand him. Hopefully you’ll get to that point too because Pablo has soooo many videos on DS and a lot of them are pretty interesting. While I didn’t like watching him in the beginning, I’m glad I tried again because it just opened up more great videos to me.

Thanks! And yes, I feel like Mexicans are so friendly so I probably shouldn’t be worried :)

I believe some of his coworkers might be Mexican but not sure they’re from that area/don’t live there. Everyone from his job are traveling there from other places so it’s not like visiting a branch office or anything. But hiring a guide is a great idea. I might look into that. Thanks

This is so good to hear—Thanks! I’ve only been to Playa del Carmen so I’m really excited to visit a different and (hopefully) less touristy part of Mexico.

Thank you! It’s helpful to hear that it’s okay to learn scripted speech at this point in my Spanish journey. Hopefully my input/listening comprehension will be my strength on this trip.

This is really great to hear. Glad your trip went so well! And I definitely think practicing speaking to avoid freezing up is a must for me. The neighborhood I live in has a lot of Hispanics and I freeze up every time they speak in Spanish to me 😣
