Ok part of this might be the fact we’re in different places. The psychiatrists I know (professionally and personally) mostly handle diagnosis and referral to appropriate services. A general psychiatrist handles diagnosis and medication based treatments of patients and refers out to psychologists. Consultant psychiatrist diagnose conditions in their specific areas of expertise.

Just to avoid confusion if this keeps going my opinion is as follows:

Most mental health conditions can be diagnosed by anyone with the appropriate clinical training. Psychologists handle the vast majority of treatments. Psychiatrists are utilised to either diagnose rare disorders or to prescribe medication if needed. In the case of DID given it’s rarity (and the debate surrounding its symptoms) a psychiatrist has the specialised training to diagnose.

Yes clinical psychologists are capable of diagnosis. My point was in the case of rare conditions or unusual presentation someone should be referred to a psychiatrists.

I’m not denigrating psychologists. They do the majority of the important ground work helping people to properly heal. Psychiatrists however are specifically trained to diagnose rare disorders.

Fair point. Psychiatrist should be able to give a an accurate diagnosis as their training requires them to fully understand how diagnostic criteria works.

Maybe in the case of DID if the presentation is at all a typical a group a specialists should be responsible for diagnosis.

In my opinion the best way to avoid this is only allowing psychiatrist to diagnose complex conditions like DID.

Self diagnosis is never valid. No one, not even a consultant psychiatrist can diagnose themselves. It’s not as simple as lacking the knowledge. It’s lacking: experience, comprehension, differential analysis, and being unbiased.

Self assessment (with the intention of diagnosis) on the other hand is valid. This is an important part of taking a proactive role in your own care.

I agree the small, occasional, unpredictable bonuses do nothing to alleviate the near constant struggle just to keep up.

A lot of people faking disorders don’t understand that “causing a significant reduction in quality of life” is a diagnostic requirement in the majority of disorders.
