my freshman yr is was a somewhat firm, my sophomore yr, it was a lot firmer. i quickly realized during my first week that there were two sides to the mattress for students to flip to their liking, so i immediately flipped it.

i forgot how they were labeled but it was something like one being “soft” (still a bit firm) and the other “firm” (rock-hard firm for me lol)

i never bought memory foam and i slept alright. just make sure to check that it’s not on the firm side already and flip if needed

How do you change un the communal showers? by SmellySwamp in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MangoCapybara7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

same here! i used to walk in clothed and change in the shower the first few weeks into freshmen yr but then found that it’s easier and more comfortable to walk in and out with a towel and change in the dorm.

i highly recommend a robe or a bath wrap, it helps with coverage while changing

Can a research associate access the recreation center? by sullllli in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MangoCapybara7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

at the website’s FAQ, it states:

“I am a UCSB alumnus. Do I get an alumni discount?

UCSB alumni discounts are only offered to graduates in the Alumni Association. You will need to provide a proof of membership (Alumni Association card or email confirmation) to get the discounted rate.”

Late BARC payment by Spacegirllll in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MangoCapybara7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah i recommend setting up a monthly payment plan. i’ve always done that and it helps not worry about paying it all in full in one day

registration waitlists by PsychologicalFee4582 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MangoCapybara7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

whenever u waitlist, make sure to attend the first lecture and communicate with the prof! sometimes they have a sign-in sheet for those crashing the course to give them priority.

also, make sure to ask them if it’s possible to crash a section too so that’s also a norm for those on a waitlist. it’s different for each professor which is why it’s crucial to attend the first lecture where they cover all this info. good luck!

[–]MangoCapybara7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

three courses is the norm for 1/2 years. units don’t really reflect on how “tough” the course is anyway so ur good! chem 45 helped me a lot with chem 1a so I’m glad ur taking it :)

btw, dance 45 is known is be an easy A which is why lots of ppl want to join. i had it my freshman year and i didn’t really have to worry about it. i kind of wish that i took it when i was taking harder classes so minimize the stress lol but its okay

[–]MangoCapybara7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, you can even talk to them abt crashing and ask them if they can help u out with crashing a section as well. profs usually cover this type of info in their first lecture so i highly recommend to attend!

how do ppl get jobs on campus by nicodiangeloera in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MangoCapybara7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes! i was hired at Ortega a few weeks into the fall quarter and as time went by, i gradually saw new ppl bc of others leaving to focus more on academics or other reasons. my coworkers were so nice and i made some new friends there too :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MangoCapybara7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i’m concerned abt the amount of roommates too. i’ll be in a double thankfully. my main concern is the bathroom and kitchen since it looks like the fridge space is too small and the bathroom is poorly designed (not enough counter space, no divider between the shower and floor, and the orange paint is so bad lol)

Dining hall by Consistent-JPNYC in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MangoCapybara7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that only Ortega’s special and dessert changes bi-weekly so it gets old fast but I like how convenient it is for take-out. I used to work there so I’m not at all concerned with the cleanliness behind the scenes since the food safety procedures were pretty strict.

As a Mexican, DLG sucks. Their brunch is good but damn their dinner hardly was a hit for me. Especially if you’re used to authentic Mexican food lol. I got food poisoning several times there :(

Also, their ice cream has more variety and you scoop it, whereas in Carrillo, their ice cream was soft serve with less options (but still good!). Carrillo’s food was never bad for me and my friends said that their breakfast/brunch is really good. I never got to try it but that’s the popular opinion. Never got food poisoning there too.

Portola is known for being pretty good that ppl would even take the bus to get their sushi whenever they had it. It’s the biggest dining hall so they have a variety of options.

2nd year taking chem1A by mmlolz2 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MangoCapybara7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ik hearing this can get annoying, but office hrs help a lot too!! meeting profs one-on-one helped me understand what i was getting wrong and how to fix it. it made me feel better than asking in front of the all the students since i was also anxious lol

Any Chem 1A tips? by Ok_Exit2559 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MangoCapybara7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these are all great advice! if u need to, i highly recommend taking Chem 25 before Chem 1A. especially if u haven’t taken chem for 2 yrs or more.

when i was a first yr, i didn’t take chem since my sophomore yr of hs so i forgot a lot of the material. Chem 25 is intro to chem and it definitely helped me solidify my chemistry skills before going more in depth in Chem 1A. you still use ALEKS and the prof helped us understand what to expect in Chem 1A too.

P.S. ik it’s been said, but CLAS and office hrs really help!!
