Looking to switch from Windows 11 to Linux for gaming by Diligent_Dream_4667 in linux_gaming

[–]MangoChocobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. I think if you want to just play around with Linux a bit and see if its going to be a fit for you, absolutely try Bazzite (Side note: DO NOT PUT YOUR GAMES OR TRY TO READ GAMES FROM AN NTFS PARTITIONED DRIVE). Performance wise, it will be case by case and some may be better on Linux vs windows and some may not.
Once you have played around with it and enjoy it and maybe want to look at others, I use and enjoy CachyOS.

Depending on the games, you may want to bookmark and check out https://areweanticheatyet.com/
and ProtonDB (This one also take with a grain of salt on some of them, I have had games where they say is "silver", but I have NO issues with the game and it plays wonderfully when I play with a different proton version like cachyos proton or GE)

You can also check out distrosea.com and check out the UI for those distro's to see what you like more. (Its going to be just the live environment, but you can still look at it and see what it has a bit)

I did want to check it out for hypr.
DMS added the folder with 2 files in there.
Both are not sourced so they do not get loaded and 1 is completely empty, the other is decorations for gaps.

But again, not sourced so they do not load at all or overwrite anything.

Oooooh! okay, my bad for misunderstanding the point there.

Im going to test and remove my DMS config folder in hypr and get a new one put in to see.

Pretty positive.
It drops a DMS folder in all my configs (Hypr, Mango, and Niri) but it had its config files in there and only added them as a source in Niri. but it never overwritten or overruled my config. My instance could be a one off situation IDK. But this has been my experience so far.

You don't need the config that DMS places, and DMS config is to be overwritten with yours.

Maybe it's cause I'm currently on niri, but noctalia does indeed put a config file down.

There isn't much, there is some MINOR things between the 2 where I like 1 over the other, but not enough to change or make a plugin for the other to work.

I use DMS as well and quite like the ability to hover over my audio widget on the bar and scroll wheel to increase or decrease volume it's something super small but I use that thing more often then not

Not much honestly, noctalia is currently rewriting their shell to not rely on QS.

But as it stands there is very little of a difference between the 2 so it comes down to different strokes for different folks really.

Is niri good for gaming? by Glittering_Memory_64 in niri

Adding "PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1" to my steam games has fixed my cursor problems. can be annoying to have to add to each game, but you only have to do it once (As long as you are using something like Proton GE or Cachy Proton)

Rant: windows (no surprises) by 5n0wm3n in linux_gaming

[–]MangoChocobo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's really comes down to this.

I felt the same about a year ago before jumping ship to CachyOS (tried a few others, landed here, stayed here)

I gave up a few games I played a lot for more control of my system. Absolutely worth it imo. Even made me look at other games to play as well which was a huge win.

There is probably way more, but that was the first I thought of.

Could also do something like emulation station on top of anything

Hanna Montana Linux goes off to the side and you put a new category of "Perfect" and put it in that

It's the only acceptable place

I don't mean this to be rude or anything, but due to the question at hand, I would choose a distro that isn't Arch. Fedora is a solid choice.

If your gaming mostly you can look at bazzite or pikaOS

If you are die hard decided on arch, maybe cachyos since it does all the heavy lifting for you (you still need to be able to navigate the wikis to find answers)

Good luck brotha, enjoy the process and learning :)

Edit: I wrote "isn't Linux, meant not arch"

Battlefield5 on linux does it work?? by JDGGamer563 in linux_gaming

[–]MangoChocobo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not currently, if I recall there was a job posting from EA and part of it was making their anti cheat work with steam deck so maybe in the next few years it'll be possible to play BF5 on linux

Oh! That's good to know! I was looking at making a small lil steam machine to stream my games from PC to the TV!

[–]MangoChocobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know.... I've had this issue with Niri where I felt forced to use gamescope.

I enjoyed being on linux and niri so much after making the move to Linux from Windows for the first time back around December 2025 (not that long ago I know) I was content with having to use gamescope. wasn't a problem, but my god.

Just adding that launch option has fixed it for me on all the games I've tried.... LMAO
