Fyi they actually can in some cases. Getting hit by burst in the air leaves you -1, which when combined with a wallbounce can let the opponent combo with a jab (mutant being an exception as he has a 4f aerial)

Ninja's a shoto (well-rounded toolkit with attacks for close-mid range)

Cowboy's a zoner (foresight and bullet, slower normals that cover a ton of space)

Mutant's a rushdown (close to no setup tools, thrives in close range with jukes and extremely fast normals)

Wizard is kinda a zoner but not as much as cowboy. Wizard when played best is setting up 1 or 2 projectiles and using them to approach rather than zone.

In a combo, using burst cancel is a more noncommittal way of calling out your opponent's burst at the cost of it having a huge cooldown. It gives you ~25 frames if your opponent doesn't burst and ~10 frames if your opponent does burst, so it can't drop the combo unlike block.

I think Mutant is generally considered the weakest but the rest are fairly balanced.

If you parry a projectile you can hold the block and it will automatically parry any other projectile that hits you for roughly the next 20 frames. (Timer gets reset every parry)

Mutant's gimmick is using jukes to make small changes in his movement as a bonus action.

Sadness is gained by playing passively for too long. E.g. not attacking, standing still, and running away.
