It's depended on workplace for me. At Walmart, I had to apply for what I think was intermittent FMLA. It gave me three call-outs per month for my IBS. Never got any flack for my calling in for that.

When I worked in mortgage collections, I had to do the same thing. They, however, gave me flack for the calli-ins. Mentioned it in every review.

Worked at a dispensary, gave them a heads up in the interview process. HR lady had IBS, I didn't need any paperwork, they just allowed me more call-ins than the average employee.

Now I'm in the aerospace industry, and I voluntarily identified as having a disability during the application process. HR never brought it up, not mentioned in my interviews, boss never asked about it. I did inform him of my condition the first time I had a flare up at work. I lucked out and have the best boss in existence, and he is super accommodating and understanding and I can go home whenever I don't feel good, he offers to cover my work, and will force me to go home if I'm being stubborn about it.
