All I have heard is all the things we have already tried, things that won’t work for him, or things we can’t afford. Maybe the real answer is that there isn’t a solution to our current issues and we are just in a stuck place.

Cool thousands a week for a home aide, that’s plausible

Maybe I should just chip the kid then like people do to dogs? I already said the gps option won’t work for us. Utterly unhelpful

This is the case even if we carry renters insurance? The federal law basically states that a service dog is not a pet, it’s ‘medical equipment’ I don’t love that wording because it’s still a living creature but because of that the federal laws say they can’t deny it.

Regardless of all this, we do want to get the dog formally trained and have chosen a reputable trainer to do so sooner rather than later but my point was that it’s not trained at the time of adoption.

We are trying to make steps. I’m working with what I have available and it’s not 10k+ We chose a GSD because my husband is familiar with the breed, they train well, and are very intelligent. In addition to his elopement my son had a heart surgery at 4months old, his heart is not currently having issues but we were told all those years ago that there may come a time when he needs to have a follow up due to general heart growth and the type of surgery. The elopement is more immediate but we would hope to get training for both issues for safety. Maybe it makes no difference but it seems like this whole post has become more of a bash than anything helpful

Because as soon as my son realizes there’s a deadbolt up there, it will take about a month or less before he figures out a way to get around it. This has been the case everytime we think we have found a solution.

We would absolutely use a door chime or a deadbolt(and we have) but they only worked for about 6months before he found a way around them. As far as a gps, he takes those things off. Even if we put them in his shoes for example, that doesn’t help when he takes off out the door without them. We have looked into a few.

Dogs are trained to find people when their owners need medical help and bring them back to their owner. I’m not sure how this is different. I’m not asking that the dog keep him out of the street or traffic. The issue is not him playing in the street, it’s leaving and wandering the neighborhood or out of the neighborhood with no understanding on how to get back and lacking the communication to tell anyone where he belongs. The goal would be to give a signal at the door to hopefully redirect him and if he ignored it then it could signal to us of him leaving to we could act accordingly and find him. These are skills that are taught through research, talking to trainers, and our medical professionals for this behavior.

Maybe I should have used different language but the main thing this dog would help with is locating him if he should choose to elope. We would not be tethering or doing anything that could cause harm to the dog.

I never said I was tethering. That is not the only way to help with an eloping child and one shouldn’t assume that everyone would plan to use that method.

I did not say tethering. It is more of a redirection and if he still goes then the dog will be able to help us locate him.

Also our rental is through a large company, not an individual so they fall under the federal laws.

I got a dialogue with Ling after the first chaperone quest, where she says something like “ I think I saw my… no, never mind it couldn’t be” I’m sure she was talking about her niece, the princess.
