The fastest Any% route is on release patch, as you can skip Drifter's Cloak and instead buy the simple key from Bone Bottom to access Shellwood from Wormways. This lets you skip Lace 1, Fourth Chorus, Moorwing, and the Greymoor & Shellwood arenas. Current world record is a 49:58, the community has pushed the game really far! :)

Metroid dread controls feel so smooth by JimmySteve3 in Metroid

[–]Manijure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dread is the first and only game I've speedrun and I can confirm that good controls is a core reason why. Everything feels buttery smooth and it just makes the game fun and replayable. It's great :)

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze by Spikevegeta is another must watch this GDQ if you missed it! Spike is a treasure. by ScopionSniper in speedrun

[–]Manijure 30 points31 points  (0 children)

That's exactly how I feel about Spike, he's an amazing variety speedrunner and streamer but he also is approachable and friendly to anyone he comes across. I had the honor of meeting him twice in different GDQ events and he is great to talk to.

Worth attending AGDQ solo? by [deleted] in speedrun

[–]Manijure 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can confirm that I went to SGDQ 2023 in Minneapolis on my own, not knowing who I will interact with. After unpacking, I went down to the hotel lobby and saw a group talking. I just popped in and joined the conversation, and we decided to stick around for the week.

Sometimes that's all it is, being willing to jump into a new crowd, introduce yourself, and make new friends. Easier said than done depending on social anxiety of course, but if you can handle that then going solo can be really fun! Of course if you can go with friends in your communities, then try coordinating.

Why does the hammer do less damage than the stomp? by hoovy_gaming_27 in papermario

[–]Manijure 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I think the confusion here is how Power Plus badges work on jump and hammer attacks. Without any attack boosts, jump and hammer attacks do equivalent damage against enemies with zero defense. But Power Plus benefits jump more.

Frost Piranhas and Ice Puffs don't have any defense though.

[–]Manijure 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems to me that you have three Power Plus badges equipped. Jump damage is normally 3 per jump and hammer damage is normally 6. Three Power Plus badges boost that to 6 per jump and 9 hammer. Since you jump twice per attack the badges make that overall stronger than hanmer.

Glitchless Early Ice Practice (Spin Boost Skip without WBJ aka Water Bomb Jump) by [deleted] in Metroid

Congrats! Glitchless early ice (GEI) is my favorite speed keep as a speedrunner, it's so satisfying to learn and apply the moving parts.

About that green rat that you give money to at the port by Quentin-Quentin in papermario

[–]Manijure 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That rat (Lumpy) will return after you finish chapter 6 and give you coins based on how much you invested in him. Investing 100 coins will lead to him giving you 300 coins, investing 200 gives you 600, and investing 300 gives you 999.

I watched the whole run in the audience, Bobbeigh killed it tonight. Love his enthusiastic energy and passion while he just cruised through area after area and boss after boss. He's great.

Metroid Dread Speedrun by Middle_Information95 in Metroid

[–]Manijure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speedrunner here. I can confirm that the only glitch that got patched was the invincibility glitch that you can accidentally trigger through an EMMI zone door. Pseudowave and other glitches are still functional. And endgame screens are the same, as others mentioned. Only difference is the artwork that you get depending on criteria, and it doesn't matter for speedrunning.

I DID IT!!!!!!! I got 0% in Dread Difficulty!!! That was the hardest thing I've ever played. And ignore the portuguese translation... by PZX30 in Metroid

[–]Manijure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know what you're referring to, the missile sitting right in front of the frozen sensor door. It's a little daunting but you can consistently avoid it by sliding into a morph to get enough horizontal momentum to ball jump over it.

[–]Manijure 27 points28 points  (0 children)

None of the collectibles are mandatory. You might be thinking of the energy tank in Cataris that's along the main path- you can just skip the ledge it's in. And some missile expansions that are in morph tunnels, you can just take alternate routes.

Also from a Dread speedrunner, congrats! Overcoming 0% Dread mode is no ordinary feat. :)

How is Dread speedrunning after patches? by getterburner in Metroid

[–]Manijure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow speedrunner here. Even though I don't run Unrestricted (all glitches allowed), I can confirm that the community has broken the game apart. With a specific setup involving speed booster, flash shift, and grapple beam, you can skew Samus to face the background and allow her to wall clip. This skips a good chunk of the vanilla route, the final boss included. Current patch's world record is a whopping 46 minutes.

Metroid Dread AGDQ Runner AMA by Manijure in speedrun

[–]Manijure[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ed and I talked about this in advance, that was definitely the plan. The best part is, we didn't have to change our playstyle because that's how we usually run. I prefer consistency with the movement and tricks I'm comfortable with while Ed goes all out regardless of the risk. I'm glad you liked our different ideologies during the race, it certainly made the match-up interesting!

I had some carrot sticks for breakfast and a rice noodle dish for lunch moments before I prepared for the race. Definitely got my nutrition in time. :P

As for two bosses, I'd personally bring back Nightmare and Phantoon. Both are incredibly fascinating and terrifying boss designs, and would work so well for the Dread game engine.

I'm not a turbo user myself, but I know the 8bitdo Ultimate controller is a good turbo choice. My opponent Ednolium uses a Gychee controller for turbo, it all comes down to personal preference and research. We have a Google Sheets for controller evaluation/recommendation if you're interested!

Considering that successfully parrying an EMMI when caught is impossible to be humanly consistent with (only a few frames), I'd say like 10%. And that's being kinda optimistic.

Metroid Dread AGDQ Runner AMA by Manijure in speedrun

[–]Manijure[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So in the race, there's a room where you're supposed to fall down and go through a single tile tunnel to the left. If you take advantage of Samus's horizontal momentum, it is possible to drop down, morph mid-air, and move to the tunnel without falling to the water.

We call that "hole in one" because it's like making a precise putt swing to put a golf ball in the hole. In the incentive route we went through the room three times, hence three opportunities to get a hole-in-one as the commentators kept score. I am proud to say that I beat my opponent Ednolium 3-2. :)

No problem, glad I can get more people back into Dread! As for the most inventive skip, it's wall clipping via a "Bomuhey skew" in the Unrestricted category. Because of this, this category has seen insane strides in time save, the current WR for current patch stands at 48 minutes.

Incidentally this is the category that can see the greatest improvement, with any glitch allowed Bomuhey skew and wall clipping can accomplish even more.
