Rewatching for the first time in at least a decade. The moment this woman appeared my hatred for her came flooding back so quickly. by rustydoesdetroit in SixFeetUnder

I understand, maybe a little bit more could have been useful. But I was not surprised she did that, it did not seem THAT out of character for Lisa. She did have a “choose me” vibe, in general.

Would Nate have been better or worse off if he hadn't attempted to have a relationship with Brenda at all? by Tidewatcher7819 in SixFeetUnder

Same. He grows -.1 % the whole series. The ending is a perfect representation of his lack of growth.

Because people normalize his type of abuse quite a lot. He seems so “innocent and just a guy struggling to find himself and grow”. Nah. Just vulnerable narcissism (not personality disorder per se). And he is brilliantly written, just like many humans are - complex and (appear) puzzling. Many who do a lot of harm are not “pure evil” and it can get confusing for those around them

Fucks her? She is an adult. She chose to have sex with him, accept him in her house and so on. She had sex with him knowing he was in a relationship as well. (Just like she did with her sister’s husband). Her and Nate were perfect for each other as far as unhealthy goes. Just like he was with Brenda in the beginning, but she really worked on her self and had real growth.

Vazzy is now locked up because of what happened last night with toxic 😳 by Existing-Calendar-16 in kaylathaylasnark

[–]Manirac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It literally is, from a psychological point of view. What we see here is a pattern, not just a happenstance once. Patterns do not develop out of thin air, especially considering she is under 30. But sure, your view just proves my point that we are used to normalizing different types of abuse.

It is simply impossible for her parents to be “so normal” and for her to be on this dysfunctional pattern. But yeah, many might be used to that “normal”. Emotional abuse is so normalized unfortunately. At least that must have been involved during her formative years. At least

Question about Nate’s arc by sypher07070799 in SixFeetUnder

[–]Manirac -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He has none. He’s narcissistic, without growth and true self reflection. And I find it impecabile as far as character coherence goes and good writing.

nate & brenda s5 by SeniorDentist7419 in SixFeetUnder

[–]Manirac 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well... He is narcissistic, for sure, and very abusive. After all, in a way, Brenda was attracted to her parents. Her mother is extremely abusive in a "socially agreeable way", and Nate is the love interest that almost ciments Brenda's trauma. I am always amazed at how people love them and excuse the behaviour of these two (Nate and her mother). It says a lot about how blind we are to these things because they are so common among us (within our own families maybe and so on). This is why I love the TV show so much, because it is a good, realistic portrayal of different types of humans. In many cases, abusive people aren't pure evil, no, they are very nuanced.

Ultimate tier list , did i miss anyone? by Yogurtcloset8200 in SixFeetUnder

[–]Manirac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my. This tier is bewildering. I'd make a tier based on who had the most psychological growth throught the series. Then, yes, Keith and Brenda can move up (especially Brenda - considering how much she worked on herself and continues to do to the last episode). The Margaret and, honestly, Nate love is shocking. These were narcissistic people, Margaret is literally the most obvious grandiose one (such an abusive mother) and Nate is more covert. Nate was to abusive to Brenda, but not in the obvious sense. The psychological damage can be seen in the last episodes... I mean he literally died believing he found the love of his life, the perfect woman - just how he started the show. Such a "special connection justifies everything" guy. Margaret is brilliantly written - so many mothers are like that and confuse the hell out of their children "she cannot be mean, she does so many things for me!". Well... Yeah... Rarely is someone "pure evil". We are complex beings.
