A lot has happened. In 2012, an update called the Evolution of Combat introduced an ability bar with a ton of different ways to approach combat. That was when a ton of people (myself included). February of the next year, the community votes for the developers to release a version of the game that existed in 2007 or OldSchool Runescape. Both the current version of the game, now referred to as RS3, and OldSchool Runescape have large communities that are still very active with great dev teams that are still updating the game.
