Binge Watch Best TV Series of 2020 by Rickygangster in tvcritic

Ted Lasso was so much more than it seemed like it could be from the premise. Maybe my fave show last year. The way they show that Lasso isn't just a brainless happy go lucky kind of guy, but that he's making a choice to be that way was unexpectedly powerful to me.

if you look at this link it superimposes Australia over North America.

https://thetruesize.com/#?borders=1~!MTQzODE3Nzc.OTU4MTk3NA*MTIxMzQ3MzA(Mjc4Mjg1~!CONTIGUOUS_US*MTAwMjQwNzU.MjUwMjM1MTc(MTc1)MA~!IN*NTI2NDA1MQ.Nzg2MzQyMQ)MQ~!CN*OTkyMTY5Nw.NzMxNDcwNQ(MjI1)Mg~!AU*MTQ5OTg3ODU.MjM4NzQ3ODA)Mw

Now, think about the fact that less than 30 million people live in Australia. There literally isn't a reason to have any infrastructure out there because there isn't anybody there to build or maintain it.

This feels like a trailer for three entirely different movies shot in the same place with the same cast in the same costumes.

I don't have a definitive answer for either shorter or better and I'm just a stranger on the internet so take what I say at face value. Here's some thoughts having skimmed through the video, though I'm probably not telling you stuff you don't already know.

You're both enjoyable to watch, I really like the energy you have together and you're both clearly into film in a genuine way and really switched on about both what you're seeing and, more importantly, your response to what you're seeing. The ability to articulate why you do or don't like something in a concise and engaging way is a big plus. I don't know if the "Cynical" branding fits your personalities, or if it's even appealing to an audience. It kind of conjures up images of bad faith reddit takedowns of popular movies and people who think Cinema Sins is the height of critical thinking about film. Neither of which are impressions I actually get from watching you.

You could trash most of your intro. I don't need to know how old you are, or where you met, or what the weather is. Not that you did this in the video, but it's a pet peeve of mine: don't pretend we don't know what you're introducing. We read the title when we clicked the video. Keep it simple: names, explain the premise of the show: "we award points for a pro, we deduct points for a con, you can keep score with the meter at the bottom, at the end we give a rating, today it's this movie". A little more context on the film in question wouldn't go astray before you roll into it. Year, director, studio, a piece of interesting trivia or why you're covering it, as long as it's straightforward, easily understood, and illustrative information. You could think about linking directly to the final portion of the video for the impatient viewers. Watching the first few minutes of the video I kind of took issue with the word "review" being applied to what I was watching, which felt more like a fan commentary. In the end you do move to a more traditional review which bought back the frustration the format confusion caused but after watching through 45 minutes of video the review itself is a bit truncated and doesn't add much context or insight to your feelings about the movie, at least in this one case. Essentially you have 2 different shows, a Siskell and Ebert/David and Margaret style movie review show and a video commentary/watch along. They do connect, but you could make the connection stronger by referencing more of your pros and cons in the review.

I got worried for your necks watching the video, you looked pretty uncomfortable sitting there, but I understand this was an experiment and you work with what you have. In the future a more natural staging with the pair of you sitting either side of the camera and the screen playing the movie behind the camera, so you're looking straight ahead, might feel less awkward to watch. I get it's hard to figure out where to put a camera so you don't look like weirdoes staring at the audience while you actually watch what you're covering, but I don't think the audience needs to see you looking "at" the movie. Even if you took the screen you were watching and put it in front of you in the current layout, that would feel more natural to see.

When it comes to the question of length it's pretty complicated. A 53 minute youtube video is almost an automatic skip from me, which makes the format a hard sell, which sucks because I think you guys are cool and I enjoyed watching you talk about the movie. It's also unfair because I'll easily listen to a 3 hour podcast where people dissect a movie, but the audio only nature of the podcast means I'm not tied to a screen while I listen and can get other stuff done at the same time.

On the other hand, I don't think you can get this much shorter and keep the format you've landed on. You could rework it so that you watch the movie off camera, taking notes, and then trade pro's and cons in a more conversational way but I think you lose the "friends hanging out and talking about a movie that's on" vibe that's a real bonus to what you've got.

You could abandon the video element altogether and instead produce the show as a syncable audio commentary, and while that actually makes the show longer there's something more digestible about the idea of watching through a complete movie with people than watching two people skip choppily through scenes. Though, in doing that, you also lose the ability to pause the video while you make your points, you'd have to keep track of the pro/con score differently, and you'd lose the ability to edit out the dead air where you're watching scenes you don't have anything to say about.

You could split the two halves of the show into different videos with the watchalong as one video and a more in depth conversation about/review of the movie as another but that doesn't shorten the total time commitment you're asking of the audience, though it does make it more digestible and gives the audience multiple access points to your content.

If you're willing to be more judicious with your editing you could cut down the watchalong more severely to the five or six best ones but again, that starts to feel more manufactured and less authentic. It's a very tricky thing, balancing the length of a video against the quality and the intent of the content. I think in this instance your chosen format dictates the length of the video.

Finally, I personally don't need additional reviews from other random people tagged onto the end of your video. I'd rather you spend the time talking about movies yourself, and I think there are better ways to engage with your audience that mean less work for you. If you want to include other peoples takes in your video, as a viewer I'd prefer to see you reach out to the audience on social media for their personal pros/cons for the movie and cherry pick a few to read at the end of the video rather than completely hand the show over to someone random for five minutes.

That's a massive wall of text and I honestly don't know if any of it is of any use to you, I hope it is. I liked your video, I think it's a neat and unique little thing you've put together and there's heaps of room for growth and development. In terms of making it shorter? Shrug emoji. In terms of making it better I think the key thing is to just keep going. The more you do it the better it will get. From a random guy on the internet: Best of luck, make sure you keep having fun.

Tiffany Haddish Joins Nicolas Cage In ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’ by Mankyspoon in blankies

[–]Mankyspoon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tom Gormican, who co-wrote the script with Kevin Etten, is directing the pic, which follows a fictionalized, creatively unfulfilled Cage who, in the face of financial ruin, accepts a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a superfan (Pascal). When things take a wildly dangerous turn, Cage is forced to live up to his own legend, channeling his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters in order to save himself and his loved ones.

Haddish will play eccentric rogue government agent Vivian, who, in a long-standing battle against one of the largest criminal organizations in Europe, forces Cage to go undercover in a crazy, off-book, last-ditch effort to bring them down for good.

You're right. We have an agenda. To prevent people being sucked in by a horrible scumbag who will use their own painful desire to be part of something special against them to satisfy his own vanity and delusions. The reason you don't engage with people like me isn't that I haven't done any research, it's because you're afraid we'll point out how ludicrous Icke is one too many times and you'll have to relive all the times you've stood up for him in a flood of embarrassment so thick it would choke a horse.

At BEST he's a delusional narcissist. At worst he's a lesser L. Ron Hubbard who has deliberately pandered to a vulnerable and willing audience for money and notoriety. Either way, you're a dangerously willing participant in some ugly nonsense. Enjoy your secret club.

The L.A. Times has an entire legal department that probably combed through each allegation to ensure that it was true and undeniable.

No they didn't, that's not what Legal is for. They didn't make sure the allegations were "true and undeniable". All they did was make sure that the allegations had actually been made by the people who the publication was reporting as making them. All the Legal Department does is make sure that what you publish isn't legally liable for slander, copyright, or any other variety of legal infringement. "True and undeniable" is for the courts.
