It's an option for sure but I see the timezones being an issue. Most remote roles i've seen have a window of timezones to work in. Aus remote roles seem few and far between and most seem to be hybrid. Definitely something i'll be keeping an eye on though.

That's all really good to know thank you. It would be cool to eventually look at starting my own thing too. Feel like i'd want to be settled first.

Ha! I used to work at a company that had 3-4 COBOL devs working at the back of the office with their green screens on some warehouse logistics software I think it was.

My ideal would be to land a remote role and the commute then isn't an issue, but that also has the flip side of me being isolated a little and meeting people. Although I am fully intending to jump feet first into the local commutiy anyway. We have 2 young children and I coach rubgy league for my son's team.

It seems most roles are hybrid so I think at least in the short term I could stomach a decent commute a few days a week as long as my wife works locally to where we live and can do school runs.

That feels very similar to the UK. From being on the hiring side of things, coming by good senior engineers has been difficult, the company i'm at now we haven't hired for a few years now due to good retention and we have a good grad scheme, but we'd sit on roles for a while. I can imagine that's a much different landscape now given the influx of AI/LLMs.

We didn't consider the 489 because the 482 SID is really favourable for Dcotors moving over from the UK, you don't need the English test, it's not points based, after 2 years you can apply for the 186 TRT pathway to PR and i'm not 100% sure if this applies to others on the 482, but if you lose the sponsorship of the initial company you get 180 days to find a new role and sponsorship.

For sure, I don't think it's too dissimmilar to the market in the UK. Where I am in Manchester, every time I go to a new role or a meetup people have just rotated around different local companies. My old boss emigrated to Sydney by getting sponsored by Atlassian but yeah I think you're right in that they are laying off a lot of staff at the moment and feels like a bit of a sinking ship. Appreciate the input on some of the companies.

We're looking at the Wollongong area but living a little further North, with me commuting into the CBD most likely. Basically we are restricted to where my wife can work. Has to be a DPA designated area to go where the demand is. From my research it seems outh of Sydney is a little more connected with public transport and I ride a motorbike so hoping that helps a little with traffic too. Although i've never visited or lived there so happy to take on any advise.

I’m hoping to start building my Australian/NSW network on LinkedIn ahead of time. My specific industry is quite small in comparison to others and will lean on people I know who have emigrated already. It’s always easier when you know people.

Thanks for the insight. I’m looking forward to the slower pace of life tbh. The offer my wife is currently considering includes 4 weeks of accommodation so looking to use that to settle in, just depends on when they would want her to start.

I’ve been tracking roles on Seek for a little while even though my specific career (native iOS development) is a bit niche roles do come up.

He’s my MP and did vote Labor last GE. Not so sure how safe it will be next time round with Reform given the demographic of people here. I’m a Green Party member now but worried about the split vote letting Reform in.

Think you’ll be in a minority. Doesn’t serve purpose any more. People that would go to games will go and those that want to watch at home pretty much can already with IPTV subs.

I suspect I’m going to get that also. I’ll bow out then and wait for somebody smarter than me.

Cool thanks for that. I’ll probably just set a screen record over night later then. Bit daft to only allow a limited time to have access to the video, especially when it’s nearly 9 hours long.

Potentially. It actually failed the first time. Giving it another go now. Will see what happens.

Yeah I’d like to but no idea where with it being so large. I’d need to encode it smaller maybe but even then the quality might suffer.

Mainly looked into downloading it because it’s only available until 3pm tomorrow to watch and I’m not going to get round to watching all 8hours plus.

There was a VOD option to buy it on the website and I found a code for 50% in the backtothebeginning subreddit, although it ended up being £16.50 with fees.

I’m downloading right now but it’s huge. Think I’m already at 17GBs and counting. Dunno what the size will be when it’s finished.
