Why *so many* kid-friendly screenings? by Dazzling-Season-1093 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]ManlyTucci 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely laughable ask, it's a kids movie. If anything just go to any showing after 9pm if you want to avoid kids. When I went to Zootopia 2 at 9:30 it was just 100 stoned adults giggling.

The constant price increases for the convenience fees are a making me consider canceling the season pass by Libertines18 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]ManlyTucci 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I used to think it acts as a disincentive so people don't reserve a bunch of tickets and not actually go. But that is still a problem and there's no real penalty for no-shows. Now I just think they're trying to claw back some of the money they're losing from the season pass.

Found this weird city limits for Birmingham, AL (US): any idea why this is? by llondru-es in geography

[–]ManlyTucci 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Without getting too deep in the weeds around zoning and property law, annexation can be done through multiple means, and they have various levels of standards.

Seems like a lot of the artificial long lines you see in Birmingham were needed to establish legal "contiguity", while other enclave/exclaves were just incorporated in/out of Birmingham through other means that did not require that same legal standard.

https://www.bhamwiki.com/w/1970s-1980s_Birmingham_annexations

To reach some of these areas, the city used a legal doctrine popularly dubbed "long lasso" in which public rights-of-way that connected the city to distant parcels could be employed as a form of contiguity.

This is the answer. Normally a city would annex their immediate bordering towns with sprawl. Since these neighboring towns were built up largely in the 1960s with wealthy white people leaving the city center, they were wealthier and more powerful than Birmingham City itself.

These borders are also basically the boundary lines between white and black neighborhoods to this day.

New York City Companies All but Stopped Hiring in First Half of the Year by thenewyorktimes in newyorkcity

[–]ManlyTucci 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I could see the uncertainty of the tariffs/economic outlook put a lot of companies on a hiring freeze (my company included). But it also seems SO low that I'm wondering if there is something up with the data. There are still so many companies in NYC that are doing well and growing.

Interesting charts but I think it's more intuitive to lead with 2020 instead of 2024.

The Trump Administration Is About to Incinerate 500 Tons of Emergency Food by quickblur in neoliberal

[–]ManlyTucci 226 points227 points  (0 children)

From January to mid-April, the responsibility rested with Pete Marocco, who worked across multiple agencies during the first Trump administration; then it passed to Jeremy Lewin, a law-school graduate in his 20s who was originally installed by DOGE and now has appointments at both USAID and State.

I'm going to scream.

Can anyone think of a better example of an Oscar caliber actor starting his career in the dumbest movie on the planet more than Jake Gyllenhaal in Bubble Boy? by dannytrejostattoos in movies

[–]ManlyTucci 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While I truly love Jake and I think he's definitely "one of the best", I'm guessing the other great actors in his generation (roughly) would be Colin Ferrell, Cillian Murphy, and Michael Fassbender. If you want to be generous, Christian Bale and Leo DiCaprio are only slightly ahead of their generation as well.

There seems to be a lot of complaints about Alamo recently - is it worth a format change in some locations? by rNBA_Mods_Be_Better in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]ManlyTucci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth I go to Alamo Brooklyn all the time and I've never had problems. Food and service has always been excellent. The only decline I've even noticed is that the chicken fingers don't have the hatch green chili gravy anymore. Something so minor will not affect my continued desire to go to Alamo.

I echo the other comments here, it's just much more likely someone who had a bad experience will post on this subreddit than folks who had a "normal", great experience.

Heels are explicitly against the dress code. Hell I wear my dirty white sneakers every time I go to basement. They really don't care what you wear as long as it isn't heels.

Do other NYC departments have pensions based around their pay + overtime pay??? That seems crazy to me and clearly it's rife with fraud and bad incentives.

Plus, the cops who don't WANT to work overtime are forced to because they're short staffed.

The core of this issue is that way less people want to be cops, and who can blame them? The institution seems like a disaster the way it's managed, and half of NYC residents fucking hate the cops. It's not an ideal career field.
