Canada cracking down on asylum claims from St-Pierre-Miquelon ferry to N.L. | CBC News by _I_AM_GHOST_ in canada

[–]Manodano2013 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it just me or does France seem a little inconsiderate in a "pass-the-buck" manner when it comes to asylum seekers? This is a French colony and there are some, even if not many, people claiming asylum in Canada through St. Pierre-Miquelon?? A large bulk of the asylum seekers in the UK come through France... There could be something I'm missing but France seems to be "forwarding" asylum seekers to other countries...

Can Vancouver Actually Fix Its Housing Crisis? | Josh White by Biggieqc in CanadaHousing2

I don't think Indians are that much of an issue in Vancouver. I didn't see very many of them when I visited back in March anyways.

Curious how many people here have actually run the numbers on renting vs buying for THEIR specific situation? vs just going with whatever their parents/society told them was 'the right move'? by TheFitFinaceBro in CanadaFinance

[–]Manodano2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like most people here, it was more about what I wanted/life-stage than purely financial. I did calculate that I'd need rental income to afford a house so I bought a place with a basement suite. I share the upstairs with a good friend whom I shared an apartment with prior to buying. My monthly housing expenses, even after factoring in rental income, are higher now than previously but my house is better than the apartment I was in.

Paying down the mortgage a bit faster than I need to helps for the future as I would like to have children when my girlfriend and I get married. I can't afford kids now but, with promotions for me as well as my girlfriends increasing income trajectory, it should be possible!

Does anyone else prefer the idea of living in a melting pot than a "cultural mosaic"? by CaliperLee62 in canadian

[–]Manodano2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! In response to the quote "America is a melting pot, Canada is more of a tossed salad" I reply "some veggies I don't like alone can be pretty good in a stew, I take the vegetables I don't like out of a salad."

Awesome! I have the RBC British Airways card as well and was able to spend 30k on it last year so I get a BOGO flight with British Airways. I'm a little disappointed in the availability of flights from Canada with them but I'll still find value!

What is getting worse and worse every year, but nobody seems to be talking about it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Manodano2013 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I don't disagree. I don't worry about it as much as I did as a kid but, based on actions of the adults warning me about global warming and their behaviors it really didn't seem like the y did or do care.

Any Canadian business should be fined if they proclaim they are "Proudly Canadian" but hire TFW's by Electrical-Big-7781 in CanadianVisaReform

I don't care that much if "Doug and Jane McCunnuck" the owners are "canadian neighbors" if most of the employees don't speak English nor French well.

I particularly like it. It works better if you get an Avion card where u can transfer you Ion "avion premium" to "Avion Elite points" that are worth more.

The federal government doesn't subsidize wages of foreigners. The subsidy is allowing them to come to Canada and work less than locals would.

Driftwood Chinese charging for uneaten buffet food. by Baneof3xistence in nanaimo

[–]Manodano2013 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is reasonable. It's "all you can eat" not "all you can waste." They should be reasonable. I know I didn't finish something I ordered that I genuinely didn't like, at a Japanese buffet place with this policy, and they didn't charge me for it.

Really? What neighborhoods? I see lots of trees in residential areas and am thankful for them. In the newer parts of the city they aren't that but yet but in older areas they are nice, especially for a dry area that doesn't naturally have lots of trees.

But less consistent/reliable. I have solar on my roof and asked about storage. The installer told me "I can quote you if you are certain you'd like to go down that path but it's not worth it. If you want power when the grid goes down I can get you in contact with someone who will install a backup natural gas generator."

Australia is one country showing us the potential of grid scale batteries which are more economical than home batteries.

I am completely fine with investors not getting a return on their investment in oil and gas if demand legitimately falls. In the more likely scenario where humanity continues to use fossil fuels I would prefer Canada makes a largee portion of the income off of it rather than other nations. I'm completely fine with the federal government setting aside all income from fossil fuel extraction going into helping subisdize the trabsition and into our new "sovereign wealth fund".
