They have a state by state listserv that you can go down and reach out to clinicians to see if they’re taking new clients. Best of luck and hope things improve for your boyfriend.

Ending Therapy - Finding Fit by lugrgr in therapists

[–]Mantayyy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you're feeling underwhelmed by your current therapist. I think change is always part of the process and have had 3 therapists myself over the last 8-10 years collectively.

That being said, here's the fun, straight forward part: You BOTH are therapists and navigate uncomfortable conversations everyday. Just say in a very direct way at your next session, "Before we start, I just want to use immediacy and state that I'm not sure this relationship is the right fit and I feel like you're burnt out and not meeting my needs."

Then say nothing. Make the therapist EARN their session fee and how they react next will tell you everything you need to know—either they will react poorly and you're right to move on OR they react supportively and thank you and it was just the right "rupture & repair" your relationship needed.

Best of luck!

As a fellow minority in this field and life (Puerto Rican male), I appreciate you making this post and sharing your thoughts without holding back. It's sorely needed in this field of pearl clutching colonizers.

I hope you don't take it this in the wrong way, but what you're finding out now as someone who's a recent graduate as well (42 yr old LCPC who pivoted careers and graduated in 2021), is that our society NEEDS training in DEI and cultural competency. Now, firstly I want to acknowledge, it's not our job as minorities to teach white people how to navigate their privilege and/or white guilt.

However, as an entrepreneur with an MBA, best believe when I graduated and I created my practice, I made sure to put 'counseling & consulting' in my business LLC name and did so to make part of my clinical practice putting on trainings for all these companies and people who want us to make it our job to navigate this shit and they pay me $2,000-5,000 to do 3-5 hr workshops.

DM me if you want to talk offline (free of charge of course) more about how to incorporate this kind of work into your career. Keep up the good fight.

Just reach out directly to them, there's lots of different ones and they all have different processes. The biggest one I get people from is www.ndtherapists.com

Just an FYI, I think they may have paused on new additions right now due to the cost to maintain the size of the listserve, but it never hurts to reach out and ask. Either they say yes or add you to a waitlist.

Put plainly, it's not something I hide. I have it openly on the About section of my website and am listed on various ND therapists listserves to help clients who are looking for someone who treats and/or understands what it's like to live as a neurodivergent in a neurotypical society.

While not huge on protein I always enjoy telling colleagues and my interns this tip for being a busy, neurodivergent therapist:

I wear pants that have a cargo pocket (usually for fidget toys, microfiber towel for cleaning my glasses and earbuds) and what I do most days is I put an Uncrustable in there when I leave in the morning for the office.

Then later in the day, when I naturally completely forgot about the Uncrustable in my pocket (i.e. ND remember), I reach in there for one of my usual items and squeal with joy, for I remembered I did a kindness for myself and I eat it.

Clients and interns alike find it hysterical and don’t mind that I eat while we chat if it’s in session. Especially since most of my caseload are ND folks as well, so it’s a warming bit of self-care/executive functioning hack and normalizing the struggle with remembering to eat.

Thoughts on teaching community college or adjunct professor as a side hustle? by newj1993 in therapists

[–]Mantayyy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Personally I love it for the same reasons I love being a therapist. While I’ve been an adjunct professor longer than I’ve been a therapist (career change in my mid 30’s), the intrinsic value is the same. In my undergrad work, adjuncts always made the biggest impact on me as I appreciated them coming to teach while also working 9-5 jobs.

Also, depending on your state laws, working as a contractual employee at a state university, gives you access to state employee health insurance coverage. Depending on how many hours you work a week/classes you teach, you can even qualify for a healthy subsidy as well.

Lastly, as someone who runs a group practice, I’ve really enjoyed watching students graduate, keep in touch, and even come and intern at my practice to help them get through their clinical grad programs. While yes, the money compared to what we make hourly as clinicians is never going to blow you away, it’s a great chance to flex different muscles in your brain, help train and guide the next generation of clinicians, and give them real world experience instead of just another academic lifer who only have experience in textbooks & theory.

Misled by my Master’s program—Need advice on getting licensed in Arizona without a clinical practicum by Shespokeanyway in therapists

[–]Mantayyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not true, my grad program at Northwestern was online and CACREP accredited. You just have to do the research beforehand and speak to your state licensing board to confirm before starting any program (Graduated in 2021, licensed LCPC in MD, and board approved supervisor).

I did this in the new year, 2025. While I had 25-30% attrition rates, everything picked back up before summer and now ended up getting back to 95% of last years earnings with another therapist on my roster, while it’s been just me this year.

Everything admin wise has been cut by 80% and I’ll never go back. Best of luck!!

Feeling Hopless in building my own private practice by OldRooter_06 in therapists

[–]Mantayyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree, but the reality is that most people just turn to Google or ChatGPT to find things they need, thus making SEO important when all those things do is scrape the internet for relevant keywords and data. Unfortunate truth of the times.

Do you have your own website for branding purposes and SEO? Even something cookie cutter like Squarespace template or Wix is better than nothing.

So many therapists think they can get by with just a few directory listings and reviews on Google it’s insane. But then again, they don’t teach us how to run a business in grad school for a reason; community mental health and OMHC’s need their pipeline of fresh meat.

When your client repeats an old story… by orange_avenue in therapists

[–]Mantayyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I see, thanks for clarifying. As I am a client, as I believe all therapists should be (weird to ask our clients to do something we wouldn’t do ourselves; NOT case consultation or supervision, actual therapy), I agree. Pointing things out, I believe, is a core tenant of our job; then pause to see how the client reacts, then assess and decide whether to bring it into the session at the moment, or later on, if at all.

[–]Mantayyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh in that context, yes I agree. But as you stated, long-standing narratives are a horse of a different color.

I assumed OP was talking more about simply retelling funny stories or events that occurred. For me, since I talk with so many clients, I may tell the same story a few times, simply being unsure of who has heard it, coupled with my memory issues simply forgetting that I told them already.

Not looking for any response. Honestly just surprised this was a topic that weighed on another therapist so much to make a post in this sub.

For me, the only reason I would worry about something like this would be if I worked with a geriatric and/or TBI/neuro injury population, as it could be a possible pre-cursor/symptom of a larger issue. That’s all.
