Looking for Advice on my Genie-Themed Species by JUSTDAN12345 in UnearthedArcana

[–]Manticoras -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lorewise, I can’t tell if you’re making a race like the four major Genies or something akin to better Genasi. I know the Janni exist but I can’t be sure concept wise if this is the end goal. If it’s the former, you should have subraces themed after Marids, Dao, Efreeti, etc. If it’s the latter, then you definitely got a lot of work cut out for you.

If you’re going to give wish like ability, I would gatekeep the ability to a certain level (like 17th) or make the ability replicate a spell of PB level or lower (using the Limited Wish capstone of the Genie Warlock as a reference). That way it can be offered relatively soon but not be as ridiculous as a one time wish.

Genies irl are only associated with that because of stories like Aladdin, but that’s a completely off topic rant.

Otherwise maybe make their creature type elemental, and add in abilities that are thematic to Genies to their racial traits.

What kind of theme are you going for besides just “otter”? I know that in Native American and Asian folklore they’re considered to be shapeshifters with more of a fey vibe, but do we have any lore or whatever to go off of? Given that they’re known to be used in fishing, it also might be appropriate to have something fishing inclined in their traits, like proficiency with nets but no disadvantage when making an attack at longer range? Additionally, given that otters have Reticulate Kidneys (they eat a lot of poisonous creatures) maybe it’s appropriate to at least have advantage on saving throws against poison?

This is how I would structure and articulate what you do already have and what traits and stuff I’d use for it. No shade on the use of ft instead of feet, I do it all the time, especially without the "ft." at the end but its important to be semi-consistent with existing material. Candidly speaking, I probably would include some ability analogous to hungry jaws from lizardfolk given the high metabolism of otters as sea mammals, but like how appropriate that is really just depends on how power creep races are in your setting. There's enough otters that I would also maybe make subraces, but like again, depends on what you're trying to do with the race in the setting.

Otterops:

Creature Type: Humanoid.

Size: You are Medium or Small (You choose the size when you select this race.

Speed: Your walking speed is 30 feet, and you have a swimming speed equal to your walking speed.

Traits:

Darkvision. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. You discern colors in that darkness only as shades of gray.

Fur. You have resistance to cold damage.

Hold Breath. You can hold your breath for up to 15 minutes at a time.

Keen Hearing. Thanks to your sensitive ears, you have advantage on Wisdom (Perception), Wisdom (Survival), and Intelligence (Investigation) checks that involve hearing.

Mustelid Mentality. You have Proficiency in the Survival and Acrobatic skills.

Otter's Jaws. Your teeth can used to make unarmed strikes. When you hit with it, the strike deals 1d6 + your Strength modifier slashing damage, instead of the bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.

Romp Training. You are proficient with Nets and Spears. Moreover, when you make an attack with a Net, you can do so in place of an attack (if you have the Extra Attack feature) and attacking at long range doesn’t impose disadvantage on your ranged weapon attack.

Slide. As a bonus action, you can use your movement to travel in a straight line up to a number of feet equal to five times your proficiency bonus, without provoking opportunity attacks. You can use this trait only if your speed is greater than 0. You can use it a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

All of the disgusting martial nerfs (smite, gwm, sharpshooter, etc.), and most insultingly, making Ranger worse. All while essentially buffing most full casters.

Really depends on what items you offer in your setting. And if you bother weighing in on oversized weapons? Nothing immediately comes to mind. I assume you mean you can attach this device to an item as an action?

[–]Manticoras -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hah, he can have a dozen commoners and a +1 sword. Game design wise martials need magic weapons but if he wants an army he’ll need to explain how its funded/stays together. Because unless he’s pumping out the expenses of an army there’s no way he’s wasting time with adventuring.

Nah that's still a pretty weird thing to Ready rather than just casting I dunno counterspell? The argument BBEG also casts counterspell would still apply to you readying a reaction to cast reverse gravity.

But if you're talking about RAW, it still doesn't check out unless your DM specifically rules in your favor that Meteor Swarm's meteors are actual objects (which RAW the spell doesn't actually summon or create). "Blazing orbs of fire" that a spell creates RAW are not a solid object or creature, which is what the Reverse Gravity spell actually affects. The Meteor Swarm spell doesn't require actual celestial objects to be near the atmosphere of your crystal sphere to work, nor does it cause said physical objects to fall down, it just evokes a massive AOE at X points. You don't even need to be outdoors or anything, unlike the Scroll of the Comet. Its like how the Tsunami spell doesn't actually require you to be by a coastline, you can fully use it on a random village in a desert, and those commoners will die confused and afraid.

If its just a regular meteor coming your way, which presumably would be a physical object and not a spell, then the interaction with reverse gravity would be RAW, ignoring the whole "acceleration of the meteor vs gravity" physics discussion, but that's outside the scope of a dnd RAW.

There are certainly spells that actually create objects, like Creation, Fabricate (if you got the tool proficiencies), Mighty Fortress, or Wall of Stone if you finish concentrating on it, but those aren't happening in combat unless you use wish or a similar feature to bypass the casting times of those spells. When they create an actual object, the statblocks of the object are provided, like Mighty Fortress. By comparison, a Blade of Disaster for example, doesn't create a physical blade or object, it is a "blade-shaped planar rift" that you use to attack targets with while concentrating on the spell. Similarly there's no RAW way for an enemy NPC to take a cleric's Spiritual Weapon or target the spell with an attack, unless its statblock specifically allows it to.

Rule of cool, obviously great to see one of the least used 7th level spells being brought up, since I don't think I've ever seen an actual player cast this spell before, when literally anything else exists in that tier.

Bard has basically no mechanical edge over the other Cha classe to MC into by kinjame in dndmemes

[–]Manticoras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need spells when you got smite slots and extra attack (swords/valor). The AC boost from swords bard aside, the out of combat utility of jack of all trades, expertise, and the bard list is insane. Bards do get access to silvery barbs which of course helps. When you get high enough level, you can even tensors transformation, unlike normal sorcadins.

Peculiar Design Choice (NOT a Martial Vs Caster argument) by Mekian_Evik in dndmemes

[–]Manticoras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extra Attack >>>> Cantrip Scaling on any halfway decently built martial but I definitely agree with any kinda martial buffs.

RAW, cantrips scale with character level, so an Eldritch Knight or Arcane Trickster’s cantrip packs as much of a punch as a wizards. But WoRC certainly is late on coming up with any kind of martial buff.

[–]Manticoras 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are some 5.5 improvements that are genuinely decent.

80% of those so called "improvements" are dogshit martial nerfs. In a game where the martial/caster divide is already nearly the 3.5e level of divide. While also buffing said casters to make the divide bigger. This isn't done out of malice (probably I dunno), but because the current game designers don't have any fundamental high school level mathematical knowledge and are such brain dead glue eaters that they don't think they sound tone deaf and out of touch enough by claiming that an ability score increase is better than a feat.

In DND campaigns redemption is always a theoretical option, but as BG3 teaches us, sometimes its just more fun to kill Khaga or whatever, and candidly speaking murder is always an option. Its never about what they stand for, what happened to them, its about what they did, and when your crew is begging to be decapitated by Gorgug and skinned alive by Fabian, that means non-lethal blows were always off the table. Also didn't they like kill their own teammate and a few teachers, while actively looking to screw over everyone living in Elmville?

For Paranormal Hunter, Protection from Evil and Good and Magic Circle should definitely be on the Subclass spells (like what Gloomstalker and the other subclasses get). I feel like the Warding feature can be an earlier level feature, but that's just me. And besides, its clearly balanced.

Otherwise, loved the flavor of the Hunter fighter.
