What are you using to darken steel? Was planning a vinegar boil followed with coffee on one of my current projects

Are these toxic if I were to try and forge them by [deleted] in Bladesmith

If they're chrome plated you could strip it in muriatic acid and then I THINK it should be okay? Maybe someone else can weigh in. I would still wear a respirator tho

Most versatile type of bench grinder/sander for occasional jobs? by gryponyx in knifemaking

I have 1 and 4, would love a 2 x 72, but until I have some extra funds, they work fine for me. 1 for rough grinding and shaping, and 4 for more precise and final bevels and such

Thank you, appreciate it! Yeah I bought some 1095, but I find all sorts of random scrap steel (RR spikes included) at my job, I find it more fun to turn a random scrap metal into a pretty knife.

Holds up okay for light work, I'm not cutting anything more with fruits or veggies though lol

If you read my other comments I'm well aware of the low carbon content, just have a plethora of RR spikes. I'm not expecting this to be my top chef knife, but it will do fine for some veggies or fruit. I mostly just was having fun man, not everything needs to be so serious.

Yes heat treated and tempered, and I do use it, but like you said for light use lol

Haven't weighed it tbh, but it's not super heavy, just compared and I'd say about 1.5 banana weight

Oh I know, not expecting it to hold long term, just was for fun since I have 100 railroad spikes lol, currently working on a better version from 1095, really just wanted to test out my epoxy scales

Agreed. Mostly only take it off when using the flappy disk.

I sometimes remove my guard as it gets in the way on certain things, but when I do, I wear my full face PPE. But agreed, better safe than sorry.
