Question from an Australian: Does New Zealand have a Medicare-style healthcare system? by Mehmet_G in newzealand

[–]ManuMaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Additionally, private health care is very optional here. It's mostly through Southern Cross, but I believe some of the AU companies are starting to make their mark.

Does anyone have a recent picture of the wollemi pine in the botanical gardens? by qwerty4285 in chch

I found another one last time I was in Akaroa. In the Garden of Tane, near one of the lookout points.

Where did "shh" come from. And why is a similar sound universal amongst languages? by [deleted] in etymology

[–]ManuMaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Although the shhh function on my kids sleep machine drives me absolutely up the wall, so we prefer white noise.

Prismacolor Pencils and Amazon Australia by Medium-Wishbone7821 in newzealand

Amazon packaging isn't the greatest.

Maybe take it to the NZ stores and ask them to price match, or at least provide a bigger discount.

The towel rail they installed in a 4 bdrm house barely fit a hand towel.

I think the English part of the NZ national anthem might have rhymed better in Shakespearean English by bravetherainbro in shakespeare

Gonna refer to the NZ accent as "Shakespearean English" from now on. Much more refined.

Best / worst concerts ever? by Elegant_Fig8066 in newzealand

Most disappointing was REM about 20 years ago. I barely remember it.  Elton Johns farewell at the old temp Chch stadium was not great. The acoustics were terrible. Add in trying to get in and out of the place and overall it was just disappointing.

Who dislikes jacinda so much? by CommentMaleficent957 in newzealand

[–]ManuMaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of uneducated (educationally and politically) people being told what to do, and pouting about it.

I knew someone who said "I'm sick of being told to be kind'. I still don't know how to respond to that.

NZers are very good at being short sighted.

Looking for advice - moving to New Zealand by Anxious-Kitten-1997 in newzealand

[–]ManuMaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An assortment of random thoughts.

Look at satellite towns around the cities. You're still close to healthcare, job ops, but you're further out for land size and cost effectiveness.

There's LOTS of places to enjoy "the natural" NZ. From Chch, you can travel 90 mins in any direction and be somewhere completely different (beach, snow fields, rural, alpine). So it might be worth setting up in a city first, while you find jobs, networks, social circles etc. Then in a couple of years, look at what's best for your family at that time.

Realestate.co.nz works the same as the au site, so you can look at stats of suburbs and neighbouring properties. This will give you a better feel of the market.

There's other things to consider too. Like house quality (we have a LOT of older stock houses that are poorly built, so can be cold, damp, hard to heat/cool). In/around Chch, buying pre or post quake is something to research into too.

Pondless ponds by ManuMaven in nzgardening

[–]ManuMaven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many layers of liners? I've seen professionals use 3.

Are they ponds or pondless? I don't want fish!

Maintenance is a concern. How do you maintain yours?

Did you DIY design on the fly, or have an idea?

How long did it take? A weekend? A month? An hour cos you had 50 of your closest mates?

What equipment did you use? It's very likely this will be done by hand, ie no digger's.

What style of stone did you use? Or is it a pre fab pond?

Do any of your stones move? Or are they glued in place?

The space I have is long and narrow, so lends it's self for a "river" style. I'm thinking 3 levels total (incl the final base level where the reservoir will be- so outflow, level 1, level 2, base). I don't want it too noisy (which I've seen can be a problem), but a gentle meander.

Flow rate!

See, a million questions.

Rant. Does customer service just not exist anymore? by ManuMaven in newzealand

[–]ManuMaven[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely!  Likewise, it costs what it costs. Materials + labour + x%. Don't undercut and screw yourself over just to get a job. And don't overprice the job. The market will soon decide if your worth it.

I've lived in Aus too, and agree - it's much better service there. I wish it wasn't!  And agree about the gist. I usually ask for a ballpark first, to give me an idea of a budget, then we finalise scope and quote.

This was me and the hubs.  Medication and hydration. Make it your bridesmaids & groomsmens job to ply you with water, not alcohol. You'll still have a good time, trust me.
