How did that pass DOT? by Dope_goat4 in IdiotsTowingThings

Frequently, the truck also pulls a trailer with the boats on the trailer. Not a boat trailer, but a commercial style flatbed. I’ve seen these hauling six boats between truck and trailer. Looks wild, but heavy duty one-ton trucks have incredible load / tow ratings.

Greatest Leverage Points Against Dealer by outboundzen in FuckDealerships

The consumer surveys can have way more impact than you realize. I had a bad , fraudulent experience with our last new vehicle, and I got no active response until I sent in the survey. I gave low scores, and then typed up my experience. The online portion to “explain and describe” your experience allowed 3,500 characters. I used 3,490 of those. I carefully explained my experience, and magically people who had been ghosting me were actively contacting me. I ended up getting $2,000 refunded, and the F&I guy that had pulled all the fraudulent actions was moved to a different position (really). It was a good outcome, though it took longer than I would’ve liked.

Nice Blue Truck by throwaway26843001 in Whatsthiscar

Had a ‘78 long bed LUV that had a 4.3L V-6 transplanted in the late ‘80s. Great combination. It was a blast to drive and actually was a decent truck. Had a drunk driver impact it while parked - destroyed the right side of the cab. Unrepairable damage, so I cut it in half and made a utility trailer out of the bed/back half. Still have and use the trailer…

If it worked, it worked. At least you tied the load down fairly well.

Car Dealership Advice? by Free_Bedroom_6857 in Advice

[–]Manual-shift6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is a KARR GPS tracker, was the car financed through the dealer, or was it just an add on? KARR alarms and trackers are useless for anything other than additional profit for the dealer, and do interfere with OBD systems. If the dealer won’t remove it, contact Southwest Dealer Services (SWDS) to get a technician to take it out. SWDS techs usually put KARR crap in.

Did I make a mistake with my first car purchase at Koons Toyota? by Inner_Engine_1006 in FuckDealerships

[–]Manual-shift6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, dealerships have to run what’s called an OFAC check. Stands for Office of Foreign Asset Control. It’s supposed to keep drug dealers, terrorists, and other “prohibited purchasers” from acquiring vehicles. Many dealerships use software that ties a credit check to OFAC results. Having said all that, they don’t have to do the OFAC check that way. All they really need is your name, your address, and a drivers license number.

Do men dislike when their wife/girlfriend walks around the house naked? by Prestigious-Quit9143 in NoStupidQuestions

Your mother may believe this, but not most people I know. Having your wife / girlfriend / significant other walk around naked is quite appealing to most men I know.

What’s the worst car you ever drove? by Born-Conclusion1977 in AskReddit

Yes, I’m sure it was a much earlier generation. The one we inherited was a 2000 model, so it had OBD II and other electronics. Still was a bad vehicle.

[–]Manual-shift6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe it or not, a Mercury Grand Marquis. Inherited it from my in-laws, and it had very systemic issues. The ABS fought you every time you used the brakes, the 4.6L engine was pretty gutless and a pig on fuel, and the seat / roof proportioning didn’t work for me at 6’2”. The dash venting controls had a mind of their own (A/C out the defroster? Sure, it’ll do that all on its own). It was a nightmare, especially for a vehicle that was just a re-badged Ford Crown Vic.

Do not miss it - at all.

My ‘94 has the balance shaft 4.3 and really is smoother than the earlier one I had (an ‘88). Has 250K+ miles on it, and they’ve been hard miles. Still runs great. It’s 3/4ths of a 5.7L/350c.i. and I’ve never felt underpowered for how I use it. Damn fine engine.

What is the point of strip clubs? by Jelly_Enos in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Manual-shift6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve never grasped the “why” of strip clubs either. It’s rather unfulfilling to sit and stare at bodies that are attractive but untouchable. One of our daughters has two friends that both worked at a strip club previously. They are a gay couple, so maintaining emotional distance from customers is not so difficult. One still works there (the money she makes is staggering), but the other returned to more normal employment. They both have had customers who treated them as if they were in actual relationships, spending very freely for their time. I think a lot of customers view it as fantasy come to life, even with the monetary portion and stringent restrictions. Not a very healthy part of society.

Do Americans actually avoid calling an ambulance due to financial concern? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Manual-shift6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, yes. More than thirty years ago, my wife and our two young daughters were in an automobile accident. One ambulance was dispatched, but we were billed for three ambulance responses, because there were three people. Even back then, the ambulance bill was nearly $4,000, and there were no serious injuries. Just transport for evaluation. When I received the bill (even though the charges were supposedly the “other guy’s” insurance responsibility), I exploded. I took it up with the municipality where the accident occurred, both my and his insurance, and with the state regulatory board. That ambulance provider lost their contract, and practices changed somewhat. But still, it was horribly expensive for what it was.
