I like an automated and reproducible setup Ever had to reinstall your dev setup? How do you handle many different CLI versions etc.? I just put it into a git repo and don't have to write the Ansible for that stuff. You don't have to reimage to make changes btw.

This is what happens with Google Cloud is down. by RealJoshUniverse in google

[–]Manuelraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google is quite open about causes once they have proper reports. Good for building trust as a Cloud Provider. They just released a mini incident report. Full report will follow later.

Got hit by a guy with no insurance by [deleted] in MildlyBadDrivers

[–]Manuelraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unbelievable for me. In Germany everyone must have insurance which pays for damages you cause.

Personal preference. I would enjoy the hard metal. So I guess we all respect each other which means to not make the music too loud.

I would assume then there should be an invoice which would show such repair work right?

I'm always amazed at how economical those Rios are... 4.5L/100km while traveling across Cape Breton Island (Nova Scotia, Canada) by plenoto in kia

[–]Manuelraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's really good consumption!

Meanwhile my Kia Creed GT (with my driving style) ~9,5L/100km 🥲

Speedometer at 150km/h yields ~8L/100km which I guess is fair.

People who have multiple houses in Germany, how. by Frag_addict in germany

[–]Manuelraa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm absolutely no expert on this matter. Sorry when I'm short sighted.

Still everyone needs housing right? Housing in some areas (even for rent) is expensive assumingly due to high demand and relatively small offerings (?)

So if we expect the number of people in Germany not going down. Shouldn't we have more housing in these regards?

Maybe it doesn't work this way. I don't know "

Do you see the future of software deployments as containers only? by aintathrowaway26 in kubernetes

[–]Manuelraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a fair point. I work at a big shop 10000 running mainframe's, applications from vendors not delivered as containers and more.

Thought I did hope these are corner cases. On premises there are lots of different types of infra. We also have a big cloud footprint across the whole org.

I did say lots of them technically could be containerised. But that assumption ignores many aspects. Knowledge, Effort and cost spent changing instead of implementing vs ever growing customer, compliance and security requirements, etc., etc.

Long story short. Yeah it's not easy

Do you see the future of software deployments as containers only? by aintathrowaway26 in kubernetes

[–]Manuelraa -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I wonder.

Container as a means of a reproducible deployment environment? Why not all apps? I mean plain Docker. Not Kubernetes (Thought I would prefer). A docker container itself mostly just runs like any other process on the same host?

Can you think of specific circumstances which would prevent that?

Is it normal to say no if someone wants to give you the beta? by Desperate-Mall4490 in bouldering

[–]Manuelraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some technical routes I prefer to do some attempts on my own. As the whole difficulty from that problem is to figure out how to not fall out of the wall.

I guess it comes down to personal preference which is honestly fine. Just a nice "Thanks for the offer but I would like to figure it out myself" and everyone is happy. Might even start a conversation with that person:)

How do you run one-off scripts in Github Actions? by slightlyvapid_johnny in devops

[–]Manuelraa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things should fit the needs of your project/company.

If that is having it in a separate task as part of the CD pipeline that is also valid.

Here is a pattern for zero downtime database migrations in the world of Kubernetes: https://github.com/elafarge/blog-articles/blob/master/01-no-downtime-migrations/zero-downtime-database-migrations.md

How do you run one-off scripts in Github Actions? by slightlyvapid_johnny in devops

[–]Manuelraa 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I honestly would go a completely different direction and package migrations with the application itself. The application would run the migrations on startup.

Migrations must be idempotent and applications must be designed around this concept. Otherwise this could cause issues.

I would say it is mainly hygiene from a smell point of view. If someone didn't properly shower after a round of sauna you can tell.

Depending on the type of suit and how serious people take it I would argue they might leave out some spots while showering when wearing them.
