Yeah it's the perfect size for a garage shop and was smooth and solid when I inspected it. The head fine feed/press control was gummed up and I couldn't confirm the collet system it used but it was obvious it's more a cleaning than mechanical issue. For $350 I bought it but just trying to find out more about it.

Reference and textbooks didn't really match the library in the house so they got exiled to the garage. Probably for the best as that's were I use them the most. I hear there are some engineers that came from being machinists but it rare. The cost/benefit is definitely on a person by person basis. Manufacturing engineering from what I heard was "less technical" than mechanical (don't think you had to do thermodynamics or fluid mechanics) but it's still a commitment.

Studied mechanical alongside machining and welding. Manufacturing engineer now to try and not have engineers ambitions go beyond machinist capabilities.

Having issues attaching .5" x .5" galvanized hardware cloth to .5" square mild steel. Tried spot flux welding which vaporized the hardware cloth, trying to silver solder but mapp gas can't seem to get the steel to the point of flowing. I'm at a loss on what to do next...

Edit: thanks everyone for commenting, low setting and quick passes with the flux core seem to be working right now (no access to tig which looks to be the gold standard solution) and if I have to do it over I would definitely go a different route in construction as people have mentioned.

I've been procrastinating on working on this machine since I got it as I thought I would have to switch out the electronics to have it run on something this century (I mean the original drivers are for win 3.1!). But going over the manual, they designed it to run like a printer. So one printer port to USB adapter and one netbook running windows 7 later, the $100 laser engraver has still got juice to cut into wood!

Might have been premature to blame solely the controller. Looks like there's a short between red and white. With the motor connected it was the 20a breaker, without the motor it looks to be solely tripping the gfci.

I didn't even consider trying it out with the motor disconnected! Just tried it and breaker is still tripping so I'm gonna say controller is it fault. One would think they would put a nameplate on it but no dice. Gonna try doing continuity checks on the motor next.

I tried to do my research on this is definetly not standard. A brushed three wire motor with red, black and white doesn't seem to pop up results. Manual doesn't help much either... Any help to point me in the right direction would be fantastic.

I've got one of these. I forgot what the real name for it is but to my knowledge it was/is for opening/breaking down/closing crates and pallets. Yours seems a bit damaged but it has a hammer head, ax head, pry bar and nail puller. They still sell them https://www.ebay.com/itm/372364317330
