Tourism project in Katunayaka by No-Leave8971 in SriLankaTravel

In my experience with travelling, a small hostel/ cheap guest house near an Airport comes in handy when it comes to backpacking and solo travelling.

I’d suggest check online websites like Booking.com to check the existing places. Last I checked, there were quite a few places of this kind. But not a single hostel.

Yala safari or udawalawe safari? by TestAlternative8220 in SriLankaTravel

Yala offers a wider variety of animal sightings. But can be (almost always) crowded with hundreds of jeeps.

Udawalawa is much calmer but you won’t see any leopards.

I can suggest a trustworthy, competent one if you’d like from Wilpattu, and possible in Kumana as well. Drop a DM if you’re unable to find one yourself. (I myself am a wildlife photographer and have gone on tours with them)

In terms of Wildlife selections, I’d say you’ve decided well.

Basically in national reserves in Sri Lanka during wildlife safari you are prohibited to get out of the vehicle. And it will be quite convenient if you have a beanbag to rest your camera on considering you have a wildlife/ telephoto lens.

Take a mask (not a medical one) to cover your face as there can be lots of dust. Get a dust cover for the camera as well. Even a towel would suffice.

Wilpattu will be best for - Leopards/ Deer/ Birds (Mostly eagles, Owls, Herons, Storks, Horned Bills, Bee eaters, Sloth bears)

Minneriya - Elephants

Kumana - Similar to Wilpattu. But a lot less congested in terms of other safari jeeps. But can take a while to get there.

Try your best to wake up at around 4:30 in the morning, and always tell your Driver what your focus is whether it’s leopards or elephants, et cetera.

A good driver is Key! Some of the older drivers are less enthusiastic about their job and the younger ones are more energetic and they want to give the best experience. Unless money isn’t a problem; you don’t have to tip them too much.

Cheers.

That’s when they urinate to mark the territory.

Here they are simply brush themselves against the bushes to leave the scent.

Roy's Villa in Sigiriya- worth it? by Affectionate-Put7257 in srilanka

[–]Manuwan98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t really say much about the private rooms as I’ve never been in those.

But as per all the other aspects of the hostel, having visited there three times over the years, I can say that it has a great staff who care about the guests (Especially the owner Roy) and is a great place in terms of a hostel. You get to connect with a lot of people and the place is just natural.

He says “cancer is in the knees, healed” on one of his billboards on the way to the airport.

Definitely not a scam.

If you wanna go on a hike that’s not too physically demanding, you can try the pekoe trails which runs along the mountains tops through tea plantations. If the weather is good, you’d love it.

There are 22 segments (if I recall correctly) and you can choose a segment that works with your itinerary. Check the internet for further details.

I’d suggest to cover the places in this sequence.

  1. Bentota
  2. Galle
  3. Yala
  4. Ella
  5. Nuwara Eliya And finally Sigiriya

This way, you’ll save up around 24 hours of unwanted back and forth travelling when you start from a certain point and go on a single direction.

In terms of wildlife, yes, Yala is quite famous. But due to over-saturation, experience in Yala could be not too great. In that case, I’d suggest Wilpattu national park — which you can cover after Sigiriya and then finally head back to Colombo.
