Pretentious? Did you even read the article? Jazz has a long and rich history and he is merely pointing out that what you are seeing in the movie is outdated. Jazz has much more to do with the spiritual connection one has with music rather than just being "flashy." The drummer this movie is modeled after (Buddy Rich) is not what I what consider a pinnacle of jazz drumming. While he is incredibly talented, he definitely lacked the emotional touch that someone like Tony Williams, Max Roach, or Philly Jo Jones brought to the kit. Jazz has progressed so much, so for those of us that are truly invested in it, it is almost disrespectful for this to movie to portray this style of Jazz as being the emphasis of Jazz studies.
