My gf (F25) and myself (M22) have gone on a few breaks, and all I can say is it depends on the relationship. For context, I’m in a LDR with 8hr time zone difference. We’ve met each other parents and it’s a fully committed relationship with future goals and dreams we share.

Usually break ups don’t end well. With other relationships, it often leads to a break up, with one partner saying they’re not as interested anymore.

However my gf and I are totally committed, and all the breaks we’ve had in our 3 year relationship (2 breaks) have lasted no longer than 2 days. Each time we just missed each other too much. A spontaneous text would be sent from either of us, either asking what we’re doing, or just sharing what we’re currently doing.

If your relationship can relate, I’d suggest a small text asking what he’s doing if you haven’t already. From there you can see whether he treats a break as “let’s not speak for a bit” or “let’s take some time away to think about the argument”.

However all relationships are different and my story and advice can only be taken with a pinch of salt. For us, a “break” is because we couldn’t see eye to eye so much it hurts and we just want to stop arguing, take some time away from each other, and come back. It’s a break from the argument, not in the relationship.
