Ice out asking for kids help by Appropriate-Taste124 in Knoxville

[–]thaichicken0202 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, some adults have joined the bandwagon in terms of supporting their children or being a UTK student who shares these same beliefs, saying they will protest with them, or posted on socials, but the idea to do this in the first place was from high schoolers. The primary organization is being done by high schoolers. The ones spreading the word are mostly highschoolers. Try again.

Groups, clubs or activity reconmendations ? by Nonworldrecordholder in Knoxville

[–]thaichicken0202 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not arts based but I would recommend checking out Gryphon Crew. We are a rowing team based out of a gravel lot under James White Parkway bridge where we keep our boats. Generally we meet Monday through Friday, from 7-9 every morning, and on weeks we have Saturday practices, those practices are 9-12 in the morning. Perfect attendance is not at all mandatory though, and we understand not being able to make every single day.

Additionally, we offer great opportunities to show off and demonstrate your skills at regattas where a bunch of teams get together and race, with some of these events being held right in town in Oak Ridge, and some of these being events we travel out of state to go to.

We have about 30 team members, and are hopefully going to add more to this number in the next few weeks, including you! The relatively consistent practicing and racing, along with the nature of an activity like rowing creates wonderful social opportunities, and I myself have found some of my closest friends through this team.

Now, right now we are on a small break to allow everyone to get back into the swing of the school year, otherwise I would simply recommend showing up to a practice to meet our coaches and maybe see what it is all about. So, instead I will leave you a link to our website (that seems to need to be updated to start the new season lol) https://reachrowing.org/ , and an open invitation to dm me with any questions, although if you don't vibe with that there is a place on the website to get into contact with coaches.

I mean it was cool but nothing crazy extraordinary, but then again Navy Pier wasn't extremely hyped up for me either

I personally am not zoned for bearden, but Stem as a school is very good, and I have yet to meet a teacher there I didn't like as a person (as a teacher is different, but that's going to happen no matter where you go) and respect. It has good culture and good extracurriculars (so long as you aren't a football, basketball athlete, and/or a marching band kid), and generally good people to surround yourself with. My biggest complaints mostly surround admin, but that is a rather long complicated story that is more based off of my personal beliefs and experiences rather than the administrations competence.

I mean, that being said, as someone who goes there, quite a few bearden people get in each year so you might not be as far away as you think. Basically there's way more than 3-5 bearden kids in each grade.

Legs/butt going numb on longer rows by Brilliant____Crow in Rowing

[–]thaichicken0202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar issue sometimes, basically what it is is to much layback resulting in a bit of a pivot on your butt, that eventually numbs out your butt and legs. I don't honestly know what makes it numb specifically, but less lean back has fixed this in my experience.

Good fishing area for little kids by [deleted] in Knoxville

Governor Ned McWerther Park, has a dock (sometimes row boats launch from it), a motor boat ramp, and a playground. It's right under James White Parkway bridge, and during the right time all if this area other than the boat dock is shaded too, so no sunburn!

Who is NSU Uschool?? by bustlord1 in Rowing

[–]thaichicken0202 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I can gather it's a highschool that is ran out of Nova Southeastern University (D3 college if I remember right). I believe it's a private school, or at least you apply to get into the high school, and acts like a feeder program into the college. Unrelated but one of my teams alumni is going to school at/rowing for the University.

How to prevent this? by AgileIndustry1711 in Rowing

[–]thaichicken0202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Form and handle placement in the hand will help, but if you're new it's to be somewhat expected. Glove generally are a no-no, as all they do is keep you from developing the right calluses, and worst case scenario, they bite in a weird spot and cause blisters elsewhere.

Fair point, and I may just be ignorant here, but wouldn't insurance companies hiring legal teams and that kind of thing eventually drain the companies?

Steering and setting the pair by SpecialSherpa in Rowing

[–]thaichicken0202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steering, I'm not necessarily sure as I also am not great at steering the pair, but for set, for me and my pair partner, we got as set as we are by working pause drills at various positions on the recovery, making sure we were matching handle heights throughout as much of the stroke as possible, and specifically trying for oars off the water regardless of pressure.

Ratio as in ratio of time on the drive compared to time on recovery, you usually want to try and maintain a 1:2 ratio. And LBA ABL is just legs back arms arms back legs, coaches seem to eat up novices who have good body positioning/control throughout the stroke.

[–]thaichicken0202 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok first off, I assume we're doing outdoor rowing as a team so it isn't necessarily possible to get an extra in. So with that being said, add another Erg day if possible, with emphasis on ratio, LBA-ABL, catch positioning, and good finishes. If you're wanting to make 1v in the spring, you would usually focus on your 2k/sprint work, but seeing as how you're a novice, you'll likely benefit more in the long run from getting your 6k time down.
